Beautiful compact old town on a small island
Gallipoli was one of the best stops on our week long Puglia tour. It's located on the western (inner) side of the Italian heel. The town consists of two parts - the mainland new town and a small old town on a tiny island connected by a bridge with mainland. Park your car somewhere before the bridge and walk over it to the historic area, and, don't forget to bring your swim suite and a towel. The island old town is full of charming bars and restaurants in narrow stone streets, nice artisan shops, a terrific Cathedral and several other magnificent Churches. At its end, slightly to the right is a beautiful public beach set in a quite and clean sea bay to cool yourself. Plan around 3-4 hours for the visit which will reward you with great memories.

    Very nice
We had a guided tour, a night tour in Gallipoli to discover and visit the town. Very nice, coloured, busy small streets full of small shops and cafes. Good to spend a few hours walking around

    Wonderful historical town
Loved this place, bit touristy and busy but plenty of spaces to escape. Easy to find a side road to park in just before the historic island. Great beaches in town and fabulous to see chairs enabling disabled people to get into and out of the sea. Loads of great shops, fish market and plenty of places to eat and drink. Lovely architecture and great historic buildings.

    Charming and lively town
I loved this charming town with its long wall fort overlooking the sea and a beach where people swim until late at night. Many tempting restaurants overlook the sea. Inside the town, Antonietta street is main one to visit though all those surrounding it are nice to walk as well with many shops here and there. Better to visit when the sun is setting or even later to escape heat.

Do it right, and here's how...
This beachfront is one of the few places in the area that has pretty good sand. The water was refreshing and clear. We lucked out and asked a man who had a vending truck, where we could get an umbrella and chairs. He set us up... right underneath him and the wall is his partner that for 15E rented us two chairs and an ambarella. He had a shovel you could use if you weren't strong enough to do it manually. Very cute, they used a bucket to get change if need be.

    Nice
Very nice and clean. Tight little area but enough shops etc. make sure you go in the main church very impressive. Near the entrance to the castle free restrooms near shops.

Beautiful city to see, beautiful sea as in all of Salento but reluctantly I have to give a bad review because in 2 days that I stayed here as well as paying properly for parking at the port (25 € x 2.5 days because I had there the b & b) I was fined 2 x 2 consecutive days and in addition to me there were about 30 other cars for no parking, incomprehensible signals since I was parked in the respective strips!
I understand that there is a need for money but doing it like this is bad.
Certainly here I will not go back and will not recommend it to anyone because there are still beautiful cities and I speak it as an Apulian!

I love writing reviews to praise what I visit or eat, but this time it won't be like that. We are in Gallipoli with the family, a 7 year old girl and a furry friend. The sea here is a fairy tale with open eyes. But the same is not true for the city which in itself is nice, but you can't enjoy it because you have to be careful of the traffic, of those who don't respect the pedestrian crossings even in the historic centre, of the waste left around (we were the very few to collect our dog's poop), to the many people crowded on the tiny sidewalks (it was a constant up and down to prevent the little girl from ending up on the street). Last night, then, we witnessed a scene that definitively convinced us of our negative considerations. Two parents at the Marconi car park (near the port car park, N.B. 2 euros per hour!!!), were trying in vain to push a double stroller along the pavement towards the historic centre. Calling it a sidewalk is a compliment, with potholes and all sorts of architectural barriers!!! In the end they had to give up and go through the street, among the cars!!!
In recent days we have tried to give second chances to this city, given that we love all of Salento (from Otranto, Santa Maria Di Leuca, Monopoli) but we have given up. From this evening we will return, very willingly, to spend time and money in the other fabulous jewels of Salento that have given us so much satisfaction on other holidays, especially Nardo' and Galatina.

Gallipoli itself is a very pretty town, especially the historic centre, but I think we don't have the tools to contain the flow of people attacking it!!
Finding a parking space takes hours and the costs are exorbitant! (€2 now)
Dirt everywhere!!
I would not recommend it to families with children.

The center of Gallipoli is very characteristic and pretty, with alleys and white houses without roof, typical Salento. Too bad, however, that it is poorly maintained and mismanaged in general, a little dirty and too busy. In some places between the restaurants that occupy the sidewalks, the bustle of tourist trains, tourist bee cars and mopeds is difficult to walk. The areas outside the historic center are even less cared for.
Also there is a total lack of parking: we did on average at least 1 or even 2 km every night to reach the center, everywhere there was chaos and Locked traffic.
Too bad, considering the tourism there is, not being able to give a feeling of greater care and general cleanliness and to offer more services for tourists.

Nothing to write home about. Regular old town part which is separated from the city. A kind of island. Full of restaurants and people but the regular part of town is nothing special. The beaches around Gallipoli are beautiful but the city isn’t anything special. If you don’t need to be there save your time for other places

For the second time in my life (first with my partner) I returned to Salento. Among the cities I saw, Gallipoli in particular, took my soul slowly, cradling me in its waves. I was very fascinated by its historic center made of streets and alleys leading to the sea, full of life and that magical atmosphere that, in my opinion, only sea places like this give.
Made of fishmongers overlooking the breathtaking seabed and the scent of infinity.
If you are on holiday in Salento is a must-see.
I fell in love with it.

The historic center of Gallipoli could be a pearl both for its particular position (it is located on an island) and for the wealth of historic buildings present. However, apart from the most "valorized" central street (in reality it looks like a market and a manger and that's it), going into the alleys not all the corners are well kept and valorized as they should be. Already restoring the chianche instead of asphalt would be a good thing. The seafront is not pedestrianised, so apart from a few pavements, which are narrow in some places due to the numerous terraces, you always walk with cars at your side.

We stayed in the south for a few nights. Only 30' aways was Gallipoli, so we thought we should check this old town out.

And what a great visit it turned out to be. Parked our car not far from the old town and crossed the bridge leading to the Centro Storico. The impressive Castello welcomes you when you enter this amazing historic town.
Take the Via Antoniette de Pace or the smaller Via XXIV Maggio and head to the impressive Duomo, the Basilica Concattedrale di Sant'Agata Vergine e Martire. The streets and lanes are quite narrow, so you have to step back a bit to appreciate the beauty of the Duomo.

Countless shops and restaurants can be found. It's sure worth to get lost a bit in this maze - especially when you head a bit to the western part of the old town. That's where many locals have their homes. Less tourists, but just fun to wander the small streets.

Also nice to walk around this peninsula. Amazing ocean views with the bluest and greenest water you could think of. Some good restaurants with ocean views (try the Trattoria Scoglio delle Sirene). Besides the big sights, the whole old town itself is a sight of its own. We loved it. Fantastic town, sure well worth a (longer) drive.

Today was a very clear and sunny day and, despite being a Sunday, there were few people around because it is now November. It was therefore pleasant to walk through the streets of this beautiful old town, which I found clean and well maintained. I imagine things go differently in August when half of Italy pours into Salento.
