I've been here so many times... it's the best open air arena in Italy, YES, better the Verona. The reason is of its dimensions and quality of the shows. Sferisterio is smaller than Verona but has the longest stage ever, about 90 mt. This means room for ballet, actors, scenery and everything else that a cretive director could desire. From opera to rock, Sferisterio is the best.

Fantastic old historic opera house in Macerata. We saw Carmen here last night and it was a serious treat. We were in box 35 and had a lovely view of the stage, sets and production. The opera house is magnificent. It has its quirks but still offers a wonderful time. The production was high quality and immensely entertaining. The air was warm and balmy. The town is lovely. Hard to fault a thing!

Great location for the annual Opera Festival. I have been going there many times over the last 30 years, and I must say that the arena Sferisterio is a unique place to enjoy the magic of the "opera lirica". I recommend watching the opera at Sferisterio at least once in a lifetime!

Whether or not you are an opera buff, Sferisterio is well worth while visiting because its enormous stage is unique, in the shape of a sphere - hence the name. They only perform three operas each season, and whilst the city does not have too much to offer, most tourists flock in August primarily for the performances of opera.

Amazing experience. Classic Italian operas under the stars! The venue was both times that we were there fully packed. The town has special free multi-level parkings available for guests of the Sferisterio. Recommend to book a dinner in advance, arrive earlier, calmly have dinner and then walk to the event. Pleasant classy Italian atmosphere. A gentleman on my left sang by almost all the lines of the opera :)
