Ermoupolis City Hall is an imposing piece of Architecture sat ideally in the Main Square of the Capital. Well worth a visit and you can access the building during working hours to be able to appreciate the grandure and imagine the days in a bygone era when it must have been used as a focal point of the island of Syros. Well worth a visit and remember your Camera.

The city hall is an impressive building that dominates the central square.
You can visit inside the building free of charge but there isn't much to see as it houses various local government offices and is quite functional.
However, as a centre piece of the square the outside is beautiful and set off nicely by the palm trees and surrounding bars and cafes.
Definitely a place to see if you are in Ermoupolis.

Stately city hall in Ermoupoli, Syros, capital of the Cyclades, Greece. Located on the historic Miaouli square. Grand architectural elements. 19th century buildings. Excellent to visit during Easter. Less crowded and authentic. Ideal spot for fraternising with the locals. The city hall is an iconic landmark and the Andreas Miaoulis statue and canons are the showpieces of the square. Must-visit.

A jewel of Mialouli square with excellent architecture. I was very sorry that as a princess of the Cyclades the town hall was poorly ⁇ ined or at least the maintenance was late to come some years. My mother was ⁇ upset as she had gone before and according to her <<ντρεποσουν να μπεις μέσα >. . .
I wish next time I could see it at its best. It is a shame to give the impression of an outdated glamour...

Such a huge city hall for such a small town! A bit shocking in its size and scope. Set in a big square with shade and places to sit. The building is lovely, impressive architecture and photos are required. The bus comes here. It's so big you can't miss it.

The most imposing structure in neoclassical Ermoupolis is no doubt its town hall, as which it functions till today. Beautiful to look at from the outside, also at night, when its façade is illuminated, it makes sense to go and have a look at the interior as well, which is possible during office hours. Located on Miaoulis Square it has low towers on the sides and a portico in the middle with two arcades on top of each other. A wide staircase leads to the entrance on the middle floor.

Inside one comes first to a hall, where one is greeted by a big bronze sculpture of a seated man. It represents Dimitris Vafiadakis, a mayor for 20 years, also in the times of the construction of this palace-like building. Behind the statue a marble staircase goes up to the various offices, which one cannot visit. In the courtyard with a black and white marble floor pattern like a chessboard is now a café, mainly for the employees working here.

The plans for the town hall were by Ernst Ziller, a Saxon, who went to live in Athens with his Greek wife, becoming a Greek citizen later on. It is said that he designed or oversaw the construction of over 500 buildings, be they public or private, mainly in the capital. The late 19th century is known there as 'Ziller's Athens', since he completely dominated architecture in this period. Many of his graceful, sometimes eclectic neoclassical houses and palaces are still standing today.

Inside the Ermoupolis' town hall one will also encounter a gig, a light one-horse carriage, that once belonged to Empress Elisabeth of Austria. A businessman from Syros had bought it at an auction in Vienna, which had taken place four years after 'Sissy', as she was popularly known, had been assassinated.

By a drink at a cafe and people watch. Or take a stroll round the square. Whilst we were there, there was a free concert..
