Several reviewers - including myself - have walked up Mount Cassel and enjoyed the beautiful view. Indeed, a - typical for French Flanders - café-restaurant (named Kasteelhof) is located close to the hilltop, at 8, rue St. Nicolas. But that's Mount Cassel - not Jardin du Mont des Recollets. In fact, the "true" Jardin du Mont des Récollets (Wouwenberghof in Flemish) resides some 2 miles north of Cassel city centre, at 1936, route de Steenvoorde. To enter the garden, you'll have to purchase a ticket... at Kasteelhof, on top of Mount Cassel. With the ticket, you'll get a code that opens the fence. There is a small parking lot in front of the fence. Note that opening hours are limited (11am-7pm Thursday through Sunday between 10 April and 10 November. The 1 hectare gardens definitely are worth the détour - being typical for French-Flemish garden layout, they won a professional prize in 2011. The garden offers a beautiful view on the "Houtland" hills. However, access for handicapped is difficult - you'll have to follow narrow cobblestone tracks, interrupted by small stairs.

We decided to visit this spot as we had recently read the obituary of Col. Julian Fane who had been ordered in April 1940 to hold this hilltop to enable the British Army to escape from Dunkirk. We now understand why this hill top town was so important as the views all round are incredible. The Roman road plan is very evident. The Tourist Office in the Square will give a self-guided tour leaflet in English.

This was an interesting park within easy reach of the town square. a few statues to walk and admire as well as the windmill ( we did not try this one as a party of young kids were round it). Good views of the surrounding countryside too

.....but with some climbing up the hill before you can grab this award! There is an informative table at the look-out site; if you're lucky to have clear weather, you may see as far as Ypres, Dunkerques, Lille, ... to name a few. The hilltop also features a statute of Maréchal Foch who directed the French army from this site during WW I.

Despite wet and cold weather, the view was great-not sure we could see the fabled five kingdoms from here but the scenery was worth seeing. Some of the outlook posts gave information on the towns and cities (visible and not visible!) in different directions. Marshall Foch statue most impressive. Also an old windmill and a bulb garden (although no flowers out yet). Well worth a trudge up the hill at the opposite end of the market place from the church.

Dream in these enchanting gardens, with numerous horticulture rooms that transport you into different worlds.
The welcoming pub, in the midst of this gem is cosy beyond believe, serving ample choices of local beers and limonades.
Particularly recommended is the lavender limonade!

A real surprise. Very well-hidden and simply delightful, a garden full of invention and charm. It is almost a maze - and quite tricky to follow the paths - but each corner reveals new and intriguing compositions, many based on historical local gardening. In May the whole spectacle is breathtaking.

It's amazing how much a gardener with vision can achieve in a relatively short space of time. When the owner, M. de Quillacq, arrived in 1990 there was a single tree. Today the 1.5 hectares on the gently sloping hillside below the hilltop town of Cassel is divided up into a series of "rooms", each different in character but forming a charming whole. The concept behind the garden is that it should reflect the historic Flanders character: slightly whimsical yet practical, open to the world around but slightly restrained. It certainly achieves that. We went as a group, members from a French and from a British twinning association and had a wonderful time, exploring the individual gardens. M. de Quillacq has a great eye for colour and even at this time of year (a damp September morning) there was plenty of interest for the keen gardeners, as well as for those who couldn't tell a dandelion from a daisy.
Visiting hours are restricted (Friday-Sunday, most weeks April-November between 10.00-19.00) and tickets normally have to be bought in Cassel itself at 8 rue St Nicolas. Visiting as a group all that had been arranged in advance, likewise the simple but very tasty lunch based on local produce.
