Train ride as part of organised coach tour so no direct cost. It was pleasant rolling along through French countryside and villages, but I don;t recall dramatic scenery. Train all very clean and tidy about 1950/1960ish I thought - closed carriages on the day I visited - nice though. Staff and volunteers all good. Nice to see enthusiasts keeping railways going that might have otherwise been lost to stupid government decisions - Beeching style closures. Souvenirs , Snacks and drinks available on board and in the station. We are pensioner couple with mature son.

A 1 3/4 hour walk around the countryside starrting from the Gare in Axat. Follow the signs which clearly mark the route. 5.4 kms long, total climb of 165 metres, mostly very easy or easy. Amazing views and peace and quiet. The start and finish are close to centre ville (cafes etc) for a snack after the minimal effort. Great way of discovering the amazing countryside

I'd never heard of the Red Train before and it wasn't until I went on a tour organized by Newmarket Holidays that I got the chance to ride this line from Rivesaltes to Axat. The line starts from Rivesaltes which carries both SNCF passenger trains and also has a large freight operation run by an open access operator, once off the main line meanders through some beautiful country in which both vines and other fruit are grown, there is also a large quarry from which the Dolomite stone is extracted. The line runs along the foothills of the Pyrenees through tunnels and across viaducts.you get good views from the large windows of the nicely restored ex SNCF diesel multiple unit also there is a commentary on points of interest along the line.If you are expecting a steam hauled trip you'll be disappointed but the preservation society are to be congratulated on reopening 59km of track though the spectacular Pyrenean scenery
