Gorgeous property with a lot of culture. Despite the fire, the entire staff continue their mission and will be stronger when the areas damaged will re-open. Supporting this beautiful place is the way we can all safeguard the French Culture.

While staying nearby Thuir in southern France , we decided to visit the historic winery of Caves Byrrh for a guided tour. Our guide was especially accommodating as we were the only American tourists not fully fluent in French and she gave us a brief translation at each stop on the tour. A stunning surprise was the Thuir railway depot inside the plant that was built by the famous Gustave Eiffel, who built the Eiffel Tower. There is a wine tasting at the end of the tour and a chance to also buy their products, including the original Byrrh, a wine based aperitif.

A fascinating place to visit and close to the town centre. We had an informative tour with English audio-guides and thoroughly enjoyed tasting the end products. The gift shop also has a great collection of wines to purchase, as well as sundry souvenirs. Very friendly staff.

Not as good as a westons cider tour in the UK, but, for a couple of bucks a head, well worth a couple of hours of your time.
Gabrielle (sorry mate if I spelt your name wrong) is a young French guide who made the tour worthwhile. His attitude was excellent and translated as much as he could in between speaking with the French tour.
View how the Violet family have run the business from little or nothing, to a huge concern, and again back to a small tight run business. Still producing 1 million bottles of the brew (could almost be mistaken for Port) I would strongly suggest picking up a few bottles in the shop after.

We went to visit the caves on dec 24dec at 4 pm with illuminate style.
The overall visit was great and interesting to learn.
Our tour guide without name tag,was not too accurate on our question and didn't know some issues. As for the last light show on the main and huge barrel we were surprised to see that light show which is not reflecting the history of the caves and we were expecting other issues like the landscaping surrounding by vineyards or various uniforms or dresses on that historic period...need to be adjusted.
Thanks

The history of Byrrh is fascinating! I had never heard of it before our friend shared Byrrh with us at her home nearby. I was amazed to learn that Byrrh was widely sold, even in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century. Now, very little is made. Byrrh is a combination of red wine, mistelle, quinine, and various other natural ingredients and was initially marketed as a health drink! The tour has an English audio guide available which is triggered as you move through the caves. The visual presentations are quite entertaining. I enjoyed learning about the history of the Violet brothers, who founded the company, and how progressive they were toward their employees.

I was lucky enough to find out this place, which it was not on my itinerary, but since it was a rainy day I thought to myself why not. It was great! They provide a handheld translator to English, since the tour is in French, and it works wonders:) many visual effects (colorful projections) and lots of history behind all of the items displayed while you tour the Cave. I definitely recommend!

We turned to be the only family registering for the tour at 10.45. so we had a private tour with interactive presentation on various screens in several locations of the factory.
Very nice to see a mix of old and new, and the large wine barrel is amazing.
We bought several bottles of byrrh and are now ordering more online.
A must see while in Thuir.

We joined the 4pm tour and were surprised that the Byrrh factory was in such a prominent position in the town. The tour was cheap (3.50 having picked up a special voucher at a previous stop) and lasted 1.5 hours including a delicious tasting at the end. Being the only English we were given audio guides and were told the numbers to listen to as the guide explained in French. The tour around the factory was amazing and I've never seen so many huge oak barrels. We felt however, that the tour could have included more facts and figures and we were missing out on some of the detail given to the rest of the group.
Having said that great value for the money and the lady in the gift shop in the town centre was excellent!

La recette de cet apéritif, sans doute le meilleur de la catégorie vins cuits et quinquina a-t-elle été modifiée ?
Byrrh semble être un peu plus sucré.
