We participated in the cooking class and garden tour at Ella Spice Garden and would highly recommend this activity to others looking to spend an afternoon preparing a traditional Sri Lankan meal. Our hosts communicated well with us, kept us engaged in the cooking class and lead us in the preparation of two curries, dahl and coconut sambol. We were all encouraged to participate and although this is more of an observational class rather than an immersive participatory cooking class, we feel that the instructions given during the class along with the notebook provided to jot down recipes and notes, will allow us to reproduce these recipes at home. The Spice Garden shop is also open at the end of the meal which gave us a great opportunity to purchase ingredients that are difficult to procure once home.

Cooking in nice atmosphere with funny guy that explains a lot about spices and the way you use it in the Sri Lankan kitchen. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

We enjoyed a visit to the Spice Garden Ella in Feb 2020. The garden itself was small but interesting. The standalone fee per person was 200 rupee. If you book the cooking class (2000 rupee per person), the spice garden is included. The cooking class is between 5pm-8pm at the residence on the same property as the garden. Approx 7-9 people are in the class. We found it fun, largely due to the excellent humour of the host/teacher. Everyone had a turn because there were no individual cooking stations. I would say a group of 9 is too big for this kitchen but I appreciate they want to make the venture profitable. We produced 4 curries and they were all delicious. It was lovely to sit down together and enjoy the meal at the end of the class.

This was a great experience! We loved the cooking class. Our teacher was so hilarious, putting everyone at ease, with a real dry sense of humour. He got everyone involved in the class. First a tour of the garden to see the ingredients growing. We made different kinds of curry - personal favourite the garlic curry and the lentil daal. Of course at the end of the lesson you get to sit down together and eat all the amazing food you’ve worked on. Couldn’t recommend this experience more!
