- Scenic Lanka Personal Tour DriversColombo, Sri Lanka252 contributionsA Guide’s View: Discovering the Beauty and Legend of Ravana FallsRavana Falls is a highlight of any tour through Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country, and it's always a pleasure to guide visitors to this magnificent natural wonder. As a guide, I find that Ravana Falls never fails to impress with its sheer beauty and serene setting. The waterfall itself is a striking sight, cascading gracefully over rugged rocks into a crystal-clear pool below. The backdrop of lush green forest adds to the enchantment, creating a picturesque scene that's perfect for both relaxation and photography. One of the best aspects of Ravana Falls is its accessibility. It’s just a short walk from the main road, making it an easy stop for travelers of all ages and abilities. Whether visitors are looking to dip their toes in the cool waters or simply enjoy the view from the observation point, the experience is both enjoyable and hassle-free. I particularly love sharing the local legends and cultural significance associated with Ravana Falls. The story of King Ravana, a central figure in Sri Lankan folklore, adds a layer of intrigue and connection to the site. It’s always rewarding to see visitors appreciate not just the natural beauty but also the rich cultural context. For those traveling through the Ella region or seeking a tranquil spot to unwind, Ravana Falls is a must-visit. Its natural charm and easy accessibility make it a perfect addition to any itinerary. Join us on a tour and let’s explore this beautiful waterfall together!Visited November 2023Traveled on businessWritten August 9, 2024
- Aditi PatelLucknow, India2 contributionsLovely, but Can Be CrowdedRavana Falls is a beautiful sight to see, with the water cascading down amidst lush greenery. It’s easy to access, just a short walk from the main road, making it a convenient stop for visitors in the Ella area. The falls are quite picturesque, especially if you visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon when there are fewer tourists. However, it can get crowded during peak times, which can take away from the peaceful experience. The rocks near the base can be slippery, so caution is needed if you're trying to get a closer look. While the waterfall itself is stunning, there isn't much to do around the area beyond a quick visit, so it’s a brief stop rather than a destination to linger. Overall, Ravana Falls is worth seeing for its natural beauty, but it might not offer the most tranquil experience during busy hours.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 2, 2024
- Jalaja ManiBengaluru, India99 contributionsRavana FallsIt is a beautiful falls cascading from a height of almost 100 feet. The falls is named after Ravana, the king of Lanka. As per Ramayana legend, Ravana is said to have hidden Seetha Devi somewhere behind these falls.Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 5, 2024

The waterfall isn’t unimpressive and you’ll get a nice shot or two, however wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to go there, but instead try to accommodate it as a stop off on your way to somewhere else. It’s not suitable for bathing as is dangerous.
If you do decide to go, from Ella we got a local bus which took 20mins and cost 50lkr per person vs a tuk tuk for c.1500-2000lkr.

May be it is my twelfth visit! Several stepped Ravana falls has always been the main attraction to visitors to Ella. Columns of clear water with bubbles and froth mixed in it like a thick lace curtain makes it a picture to stare at. It was interesting to see the surrounding rock faces through a telephoto lens or binoculars where I could spot rock shelters or semi caves in the upper region of the hill. I wonder whether ancient humans lived in them during the stone ages.

The Ravana Falls are worth seeing if you visit Ella. A twenty minute tuk tuk ride out of the town, it might cost you about 2000 rupees. We stopped on our way to Udawalawe so the stop was included in the total price. You cannot walk there from Ella as the road is pretty narrow with lots of traffic. The falls themselves are nice to see; about 25 metres high but quite wide (widest in Sri Lanka). Depending on the time of year there would be more or less water pouring down the rock face. We visited in January and there was still some water flowing.

Near Ella, the waterfall can be viewed from various vantage points. It is about 85 meters high. That it is a broken up waterfall adds to its allure. It has wide and narrow areas and areas of crashing waters and relative calm. It was named after an evil king named Rawana. Some call it Bambaragama Falls. It is best seen during the rainy season. It is conveniently located beside the Wellawaya Road. The uploading speed was terrible so I could not provide some photos.

A well visited waterfall on the main road from Ella to yala. The place is close to the main city and can be easily accessed via bicycles or vehicles. The view is really stunning and you feel like spending some time here. A couple of small eateries help you refresh. A good visit in Ella.

It is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka and currently ranks as one of the widest waterfalls in the country. It is best visited during the local wet season. It is best viewed from the road side.

Amazing !! Very attractive and marvellous place.slippery, be careful on walking. Sometime very dangerous where you face danger experience. You can bath near waterfall. But don't try to reach the base of waterfall ,it is very careless stupid work because that point is very deeper than you think. Some days upper area of waterfall receive high amount of rain and suddenly increase the level of water in bathing area. Therefore you be careful and have a panaromic view

One of the most popular attractions in Ella. It is known to be one of the widest waterfalls in the island with a height of around 82 ft. Due to its popularity, its heavily crowded during most of the time and the area surrounding the fall is highly commercialized. Nevertheless, it's a must visit destination.

It's a very nice waterfall. We went when it had been pretty dry - I imagine it would be more spectacular when it's been raining. There are some local pop-up stores nearby, and it's just off a fairly busy road. But you get a fair amount of people here, all scrabbling around for the same photos. So check it out if you're passing, otherwise skip.

How do you get to the Upper Ravana Falls? Is it possible to hike from the lower falls on the road? If so, approximately how far is it to the upper falls?
Written January 25, 2019
Lonely Planet describes the path to the upper falls as such: follow the train tracks from Ella towards Banderawella for 45 minutes, cross a black bridge and turn left at a shrine, then go down an embankment. I had planned to access this way but turned around when it started raining.

Hola!
