This market can be found if someone goes to Apo island on a Wednesday because this place is leading up to the Malatapay wharf where people get outrigger boats to Apo island. The main thing here is you can buy fresh farm produce cheaply, eat local cuisine on an ordinary Filipino setting (toro2x) with the crunchy lechon and it can be quite entertaining to watch people buy and sell carabaos, horses, chickens, goats, etc., but of course you have to be ready for some foul smell if you get near the place where they keep these animals. This only happen on Wednesdays tho. So if this sort of activity is new to you then it can be fun to experience, for sure the fish that they cook there is always fresh.

During our vacation at Atlantis Dumaguete in May 2018 (see separate review), we ventured out to the Malatapay Market for the day. We wanted to get souvenirs for our family members and get a taste for the local culture. The market is one long street with little huts set up on each side. I would say it is about a quarter of a mile long. There is a little of everything for sale, to include raw fish, dried fish, home goods, livestock, trinkets, clothing items, and odds and ends. There are very many different smells surrounding the street, which adds to the experience.
The people are very friendly and not pushy...except the pearl salesman. If you make eye contact with them, they will NOT leave you alone. But if you are looking for pearls as a purchase, you can haggle with them and they are genuine quality.
Everything was so reasonably priced that we wished we did not have a weight limit on our baggage.
***IMPORTANT! YOU MUST HAVE PHILIPPINO PESOS BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT TAKE ANY OTHER CURRANCY***
We enjoyed our outing and shopping experience. The people are some of the most humble, caring people that we have ever encountered. I recommend this trip to everyone!

Malatapay Market is a once-a-week outdoor gathering of local produce and other products called TABO in the Visayan Region and similarly conducted by other Philippine towns . We went out of curiosity and it turned out to be an exciting experience! The street is full of stalls selling everything local. There is even a videoke booth! But what we enjoyed most was choosing our food from the many vendors ofering fresh fish cook the way you like it. We also enjoyed the lechon ( charcoal-roasted pork)! We rented a table close to the beach (not in the huts, too stuffy!) and was served like royalty by this sweet old lady (Ning Ramos) who owned the table (look for her - her table is right infront of the posters of Apo Island). Afte the hearty meal, we walked thru the stalls looking at their wares. People were so friendly and enjoyed being photographed! Don't miss this! It happens only every Wednesday!

During my trip to Apo Island, I am very lucky that I went there on a Wednesday as they have what they call "Malatapay Wednesday Market" where you could buy fresh kinds of seafood, fruits, and vegetables, etc. Hut stands are beside the street and could be really crowded with people and some vehicles passing along the narrow street.
Also, you'll get to witness their bid for their livestock such as cows, carabaos, goats etc. I bought dried fishes and yes, they're very delectable! I could buy several kilos of it back home lol.
To set your expectation, the street could be very muddy if it rained the night before but you can wash your feet on the port so no problem.
Overall, I recommend this to those who want to buy fresh market goods.

Spend an hour here. Every Wednesday early morning thru to midday. It's an absolute feast for the eyes and ears - animals (huge cows, goats, squealing pigs) being auctioned. Arriving in their truck loads. All manner of vegetables, dried & fresh fish, fruits being sold. Alongside huge knives, market/roadside clothing, etc. It's def worth a trip just to see the livestock auction area.

Malatapay is a very interesting market open only every Wednesday. We traveled from Dumaguete City just to experience the market day. And we enjoyed it. We bought 7 kilos of labahita (dried fish), lechon (roasted pig), watched how the locals bid for their cows, carabaos, goats, etc. (this is the most interesting part for me). If you're visiting this place, bring an umbrella specially in the summer as it gets too warm. Make sure you know how to bargain and do check out the Apo Islands nearby as Malatapay is where you get a boat to take you there.

You get your daily fresh needs from this market. It is quite big for the city like that. Walking around it is a good way of seeing locals too.

This is not a Salcedo Village Market (Makati) this is not even a city palenke. This is an authentic farmers market run to cater for the locals and rural customers. It has not been made pretty for the tourists. Which is why it's so cool to watch the people going on with their business. I caught a jeep at 7am from Dauin and it cost me 10pesos one way. I had tsikwate (hot chocolate made from tablea) at a painitan, you get half a cup for 10pesos and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf for 10pesos. Not a bad breakfast and filled me right up. Also bought a cheapo plastic car for my toddler for 20pesos then back to Dauin for another 10pesos. Fun outing for 60pesos total. Let loose and pretend you're a local. Also don't bring the small kids as the traffic could get too much. As for the animals I didn't see any getting killed there but hearing or seeing them getting moved from place to place might upset some sensitive people. I was looking out for the lechon but I might have been too early.
