We originally booked onto wildwire in July, but couldn’t climb due to injury (the team were amazingly understanding about this!) We were devastated, so booked on again in December to tackle the lord of the rungs (level 3) climb. We were super lucky with amazing weather, but the team were really communicative from the start about what would happen if rain came in, how we would be safe etc. The team were awesome, answering questions and making you feel safe. Practice boulders allowed you to get comfortable with the clipping and unclipping of the harnesses so you felt super confident on the climb. The first 2 levels were pretty straightforward for anyone with moderate fitness: fun things like hanging from bridges and sticking hands into the waterfall were good suggestions by the guide. There were only 2 of us with our guide so we got to go at our own pace. At the top of level 2 we had our lunch (the deli panini and brownie are amazing!), and then we were talked through exactly what would happen on the final bit of the climb. This was harder than before, with the first overhang the hardest, but my guide was on hand the whole time and I knew he would have helped me if I’d not been able to. Immensely proud that I hauled myself up by myself! When we reached the top we felt so proud and the helicopter down was the coolest way to end the day. I’d recommend this activity to anyone: for LOTR you’d need to be fairly fit and adventurous, but at no point did I feel unsafe and this has definitely been a highlight of our time in NZ. Thanks team wildwire!
