We booked the farm tour at the last minute at the I-site in Wanaka and opted for the 4 hour tour (which we learned goes much higher up the mountain and gives the best scenery). We thought there might be some nice picture spots and...More

Sanity check on revised itinerary (4 Replies)
I have decided to skip Sydney to add 3 days to my original South Island trip starting now starting February 8. I added Kaikoura and decided to skip Christchurch. I have created some extra driving but think it will be worth it: Day 1: Arrive Queenstown - Get car and hang out downtown while getting thru jet lag on first day. Crash in Queenstown. Day 2: Drive to Glenorchy. Go up Gondola luge ride. Day 3: Shotover River Jet Boat Ride and Remarkable Road drive Day 4: Drive to Te Anau....More

Two points - #1. You will be jet-lagged & a car is a liability in Queenstown so why not delay getting it until day 3? Reschedule the jet boat (they will pick you up) and the luge for day 2 & Glenorchy for day 3. #2. You already know it so why not do something about it - Twizel to Kaikoura is a long day. Why not head a little further north on the afternoon of day 9, since you are already on the road?. Even Lake Tekapo would knock 30 minutes off the next day; Fairlie about an hour.

My family of 2 adults and 1 child (10 yrs old) intend to visit the South Island from late November to early December. Appreciate your feedback on our proposed itinerary. Thanks you. Day 1: Arrive Christchurch late morning. Day 2: Take Tranz Alphine train to Greymouth, accommodation in Greymouth and explore Pancake rock as a day trip. Day 3: Drive to Franz Josef, do Twin Glaciers Scenic Helicopter Flight Day 4: Drive to Wanaka, do Wild Hills 4WD Safari with Ridgeline Adventures and...More

Welcome back. You have a great trip planned, with one or two tweaks necessary to get the best out of your time. Day 4 is a problem - it takes most people a full day to travel from FJG to Wanaka, so you may not fit even one activity into this day. Driving from Dunedin to Mt Cook is less scenic than Queenstown to Mt Cook, so rescheduling: 5. Wanaka to te Anau 6. Milford Sound 7. Te Anau to Dunedin 8. Dunedin 9. Dunedin to QTN 10. QTN 11. Drive to Mt Cook 12. Drive to Chch or Akaroa...More

13 Day South Island Adventure...comments requested (20 Replies)
I am a 66 y/o retired male from the US who loves outdoor adventure. I am building this trip around 3 days in Sydney and 3 days in Auckland to see a Bruce Springsteen concert. Looking for comments on the 13 days from February 11-24 on South Island so I can book lodging and flights very soon: Day 1: Arrive from Sydney to Queenstown Explore downtown, Gardens. Stay in Queenstown Day 2: Shotover River Jet Boat Ride, Go up Gondola / Luge ride… maybe check out Arrowtown. Stay in Queenstown ...More

Looks good, you did your homework. A couple of glitches that I see. Twizel? You are backtracking. Either stay Mt Cook or Lake Tekapo. Greymouth is rather dull. Either stay at Hokitika or Punakaiki. Hokitika for more options for dining/accommodation. Punakaiki for a more scenic stop and Pancake Rock's Blowhole is best at high tide - if you stay overnight, the more options you have to see it.
