We booked for two tours by this outfit, and were very happy with both. The half-day boat/island walk was great fun, lots of information about the native birds, plants, history. Of course the scenery is just flat-out stunning. We also did a full-day walk near Haast Pass, which was a great experience. The forest is untouched, and we didn't see... More

We had a wonderful cruise up Lake Wanaka to Mou Waho Island with our guide James of Eco Wanaka Adventures. The tour included an informative hike up to the highest point on Mou Waho Island. We saw many local birds, including the very rare weka birds. The Island is the best vantage point available to view and photograph the entirety... More

James is our top man, to lead you to the top view of the lakes from the top! Not a building in sight, this is a very hard view to replicate in the rest of the world. Photos can never do this justice until you actually experience it yourself! More

I highly recommend this tour, not only because of the reason I mentioned above, but the tour itself was incredible. Our guide, Chris Riley, is passionate about this island and everything concerning it. He is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and he accumulated a couple of artefacts you don't see on an everyday basis. I'm not going to tell you what it... More

Thanks for your review, true that these Wetas are ugly... Weta looosely translated is "The God of Ugly Things" in Maori. The Buff Weka is now only found on the Chathams and Mou Waho in any numbers. This particular Weka species is even more "ecologically naive' than the other species just hanging on on the mainland. This Buff Weka became... More

Doing the guided walk with Chris to Rob Roy Glacier yesterday in the most spectacular weather possible - is already etched in our memories as one of the best days we've ever had travelling - not enough positive superlatives to describe the amazing scenery; awesome sounds of glaciers moving; Chris's informative commentary or the sense of achievement - simply stunning!... Half day tour was well worth it. Little snippets about wildlife, birds, history and the local surroundings. There were just four of us and James our host. The boat only takes small groups so there's a real personal touch. Definitely worth booking, this tour respects the environment whilst also sharing how special the local landscape is.

We met James, our guide at the Wanaka waterfront by the marina. We were lucky and had a smooth 25 minute ride out to the island with the typical amazing views of the Wanaka landscape. We were in a group with one other family and our guide which provided some intimacy to the excursion. It was easy to hear everything... More

Thanks for the detailed review! Just a little correction if I may, The Kaka bird is a rare flying parrot and (at this stage) is not yet back on this introduced predator free island - With our planted trees as they mature, like fine wine, we will see the full benefits returning to the pure NZ bio diversity, with food... Eco tour guide Chris is devoted to the preservation of the endangered Weka, and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the project make this a fascinating tour. The additional preservation efforts for two other species on the island are a bonus. This is not a mere lecture, either, but a lovely hike in a beautiful setting, and for those willing to... More

Thanks for this review, regards the ugly bug, funny you should mention it, as one translation of it's name - WETA - is "The God of Ugly things"! in Maori language. Today we joined James from ecoWanaka for the half day cruise out to Mou Waho Island Nature Reserve. Unfortunately a rather brisk southerly sprang up about an hour before departure but James was confident it'd be fine! thanks for your great review, it certainly is an island worth perservering for! Once you are on the island everything is good. Wanaka has had a lot of wind this year, and a southerly is unusual, due to a big front dumping rain on the West coast, missing us in "Semi desert" Wanaka. On the Boat and in Jame's pack... More

This trip was really worthwhile as the scenery was stunning. You can do it independently however best via 4WD as road rough & many river crossings. Our guide Heidi was the only downside as she was a bit moody & bossy & felt like the trip was more about her needs than ours which was disappointing.

The Mou Waho trip is a genuinely lovely activity – the island reserve is beautiful and the hike up to the top is pleasant with interesting stops to talk about the flora and fauna, and general conservation issues. The weka, which passengers seem to be quite likely to meet, are relatively unworried by people being around, and beautiful. We also... More
