We started the walk in a lovely sunny day in winter. Our guide, Heidi, a lovely lady with good sense of humour, showed us every gorgeous bit along the trail. We were lucky enough to witness the avalanche twice, stunning!! Heidi, you rock!

One of the highpoints of my 2 week holiday in South Island is this morning activity with Eco Wanaka. My wife and I were the only souls to brave a -3°C early winter morning to visit Mou Waho in Lake Wanaka. Apart from Captain Andy, our guide, we were the only ones on the lake and on Mou Waho. For... It's not often you get to experience a "cruise" and a nature walk without a crowd. We were very lucky to be the only two persons travelling with Captain Andy to Mou Waho island on this frosty June morning. He gave us an excellent nature experience, starting with a boat ride, a gradual ascent to see the "lake on an... More

This was an inspirational tour and one of the best I have been on! Chris is passionate about this reserve and its wildlife. He is very knowledgeable and loves to share this knowledge with his guests. We had a lesson also on the geology of the lakes and surrounding mountains. I am impressed with the work he has done in... More

A very special backyard this island is, we love showing it off to you in all it's pristine glory. From our "high tea" spot, it is easy to point out the glacial effects on this vast landscape, on a vast scale. We can still see the original glaciers still hanging in there at the haed of the valleys too,,,, More

Chris, the guide is brilliant! He gives you so much information and is very enthusiastic about his work and your enjoyment. Wally and Sally, the Wekas, are pretty predictable and as soon as they hear Chris` voice, they expect biscuits and juice. However, it is very important that people do NOT feed them and Chris is correctly strict about this.... More

The Buff Weka are innocently friendly in a gypsy kind of a way... "Ecologically Naive" is the official term. That is why the introduced predators wiped them out on mainland NZ in 1920. This is the only place on mainland NZ they can be seen in any numbers due to the have of Mou Waho island's isolation from them. More

This Boat Trip to Mou Waho Island is so inspiring. It make you feel you have to care about nature because nature is so beautiful and fragile. To witness the beauty of the island, to hear about her history, to learn about flora and fauna and to watch extincted wildlife's rebirth on such this remote island is an unforgetable experience... The Island Nature Walk at Lake Wanaka was the highlight of an outstanding tour of the South Island of NZ. It was a great privilege to see the Buff Weka in this safe home for them. It felt good to plant a tree that one day my grandchildren may see in this beautiful place. Chris was a very entertaining guide... More

We took 14 excursions during our 21-day trip to New Zealand, and the Eco-Wanaka Adventure to Mou Waho Island, a bird sanctuary in Lake Wanaka, ranks as one of our top five. Andy, our guide, was as knowledgeable and down-to-earth as they come, and he became an instant friend. The fact that we were the only ones on this particular... More
