STUNNING PANORAMIC VIEWS.
Feb 2020
Highest peak in the southern Alps, poised in the Mount Cook National Park. It provides panoramic views encompassing glaciers and ice cliffs.

Hike to Mueller Hut
Feb 2019
The only mountain hut inside Aoraki Mount Cook National Park that can be reached, in summer, by just a hike. No need for mountaineering experience or equipment. Any hiker, reasonably fit can get to the hut in the maximum of 4 hours. The first 500 m of altitude gain are equipped with proper stairs. They end at Sealy Point, a magnificent viewpoint over the valleys leading to Mount Cook south face. The next 500 m of elevation are more demanding as they go through a mountainous trail with many passages over loose rocks and sand, large boulders and small rock slabs. The hut is equipped with 28 bunks and a kitchen/dining room. The kitchen has gas stoves and a few cooking utensils. It is advisable to take your own pots and tableware. Food is not available either; you have to take your own. Remember that you also have to bring down your own rubbish.
It is advisable to make reservations at the Department of Conservation, DOC, as it can be fully booked along the summer holidays. It is also possible( and allowed) to camp in the vicinity.
It is truly worthwhile to spend a night there as both the sunset and sunrise are magnificent... regarding the crazy Kiwi weather.

Amazing!
Sep 2017
The most beautiful snow top mountains that can be seen for miles. Great hiking trails at the base depending on what time of year that you visit. Check the guides because the trails are in several areas.

Views are worth the effort
Jan 2017 • Couples
The top of Mueller Ridge yielded beautiful views of the glaciers and small avalanches in the valley behind the ridge. The first 1700 feet of climb up to Sealy tarns is a set of groomed stairs (2200 in all) that let you quickly gain elevation. We were going pretty fast, but this only took 50 minutes. The section section of 1400 feet of gain to the ridge is over poorly defined trail including scree, a boulder field and generally poorly defined track. Although it was shorter, it took more time (70 minutes). Trekking poles are very useful both on the uphill and downhill for both balance and saving those knees. Bring food and water and be prepared for weather. It was lightly snowing at the ridge top in mid January for us. Views are a matter of taste, but I liked these views better than Tongariro Crossing. But I prefer glaciers over desolate volcanic terrain. Since my views were compromised by weather, I'll defer to others with sunny day pictures.

Must see attractions on the South Island
Dec 2015 • Couples
Even though I have thoroughly enjoyed the hike up to the Mueller Hut, this track did not raise the bar higher than Tongariro National Park in the North Island with its three volcanoes. Nonetheless, this is one of the greatest sightings on the South Island.

Hard hike with some magnificent views
Nov 2015 • Couples
We decided to do this as a day hike rather than stay overnight. Its a steep , hard slog all the way but well worth it, ive hiked a lot in Australia and Europe and this was one of the best. Weather up top was pretty windy, and we were up there in late spring and had to tackle a fair bit of snow making the last bit tough and a wee bit risky. If ots a sunny day consider day hiking it, and always check conditions at the visitor centre before heading out.

Worth the effort?
Superb views on the way up and at the Mueller Hut but not the most enjoyable hike and quite a slog even for experienced walkers like us. Some hikes are a pleasure and offer varied terrain but this is really straight up and down. Having said that it was fantastic to sit at the Hut and take in the landscape as small avalanches thundered off the Glacier. Mt Cook stayed cloud free the whole time. Metservice (probably the best NZ weather service) suggested wind chill could knock the temps down to 2C at the hut but we were soaking in the sun up there.

Fantastic hike
Dec 2014 • Couples
This is a great hike and a real achievement for the average person who's not done any mountaineering. With a 1,000 m altitude gain and snow at the top it's hard work on the way up. Good weather makes all the difference, and be prepared for changes in the weather. The views are spectacular.

What a hike
Dec 2013 • Couples
We did this tour in December enjoying all the views toMount Cook.
The tour is rather strenous as the walking distance is rather short and you go 1000 meters uphill.

The first section until Sealy Tarns has steps so it is easy going. From Sealy Tarns to Mueller Hut the track is full of stones and you have to be careful.

Mueller ridge is a nice hut where you can spend some time to watch the surrounding.

Overall a rather challenging track but an unforgettable experience.
