Stopping by a salmon shop for fresh salmon sashimi by Lake Pukaki feels like such a stereotypically “Asian tourist” thing to do, but we did it anyway.

There is something about the experience of ordering as much fresh salmon sashimi as you want (100g is $12.50 and 500g is $42), and then eating it on the spot with the views of a gorgeous blue lake. An order of salmon sashimi comes with chopsticks, wasabi and soy sauce, and you can also order certain hot drinks including green tea to go with your sashimi.

We don’t have time to stop on the way into Aoraki/Mt Cook but so glad we did on our way out. The sashimi was so incredibly tasty and fresh and potentially some of the best I’ve ever had !! We feasted on it on our drive down to Queenstown and the only regret was we didn’t get more: Also tried the salmon spread which was delicious but maybe more cream cheese than I prefer (aware that’s how most people make it though). Still went down a treat with some crackers and a gorgeous lakeside view.

Food aside it’s also a picture perfect postcard setting there on the lake with a snow covered Aoraki/Mt Cook in background.

Definitely recommend!

This would be a must stop if you are traveler that enjoys Salmon.

The shop is unassuming, considering it’s the home of best Salmon in the world (according to NYT), the views from the picnic table are very nice.

Prices for the sashimi pieces of Salomon were reasonable.

If you’re in the Mt. Cook area take a 20 to 30 min stop for some great salmon and views.

We were waiting at a counter for quite a while, but no one was paying attention. When we asked the staff there, the stuff was very rude and answered us with a very bad attitude. Having many customers does not mean that they could treat any of them unfriendly. We were very disappointed that we spent money there but were made unhappy.

I can't get enough of that Aoraki Smoky Salmon Spread. I've never tasted anything like it before. On the container it says it's made from pohutukawa hot smoked salmon, cream cheese, lemon juice and chives. It's heaven on your tastebuds - 10/10 delicimo :-)

Dropped in to enjoy refreshments on stage one of the Alps to Ocean ride.
Salmon Sashimi was delicious.
Great range of other salmon products, and assortment of other food also available.

Outdoor benches just outside with lovely views overlooking Lake Pukaki.

Recommend to drop by along the way to Mt Cook.

Salmon sashimi is served Japanese style with wasabi and soy sauce.
Various hot and cold drinks as well as souvenir items also on sale.

Enjoyed the sashimi with the awesome view of the lake!

This place is situated at the Lake Pukaki Visitor Centre. It’s difficult to miss when you drive along the road as there will be very clear signs pointing you towards the visitor centre. There is a big large car park space to park your car. This place is also a very popular stopover for tour buses for toilet breaks.

From the visitor centre you can see the lake and the breath-taking views it has to offer. We initially went to the farm a few kilometres away but they didn’t sell any salmon there and were told to go to the shop at Lake Pukaki Visitor Centre.

The salmon here is freshly prepared and displayed in the display fridge at the counter. My other half and I are sashimi fans but were sceptical about the quality so we went for a decent NZD20 box of sashimi. With a little wasabi and soy sauce, the sashimi was soft in the mouth and went down the stomach very well. We went to the benches outside the shop to soak in the view while savouring our fish. Something I would certainly recommend to all sashimi lovers to try. A combination of quality fresh food, stunning scenery and good company is a recipe for a holiday.

The only downside for me is that there was no café for us to properly sit down if we didn’t want to get out in the open when the wind got too strong for comfort. 4 stars overall for this attraction.

Salmon we bought was not fresh at all. It was expensive at $36 for a salmon. The meat was falling apart and falling off the bone. It had a strange stench that was not fresh fish AT ALL. When cooked, the meat produced a white, creamy, milky discharge.

Hi Xi Xi W We received your complaint about poor quality salmon by email and quickly rectified the situation by supplying a full refund, and sending a replacement salmon to Christchurch. Unfortunately with a natural product, sometimes we don't now how the fish is on the inside until it is cut open. We hope you were satisfied with this outcome. Many thanks Emma

Despite the beautiful location of Lake Pukake before Mt Cook, this is the worst experience so far having a really unfriendly older lady selling the salmon and only having a choice of 10g or 30g of sashimi. The fish are not well cut. They were hard to eat and had too much in the mouth without a good tasty feeling. I mean, which farm does your fish come from? You also have a lmited stock of things. Have a choice between sashimi and sushi salmon. Honestly look how Japanese finely cut theirs and make it delicious.
