Snorkeling in clear blue oceans, kayaking, sunbathing, free drinks, beautiful food, friendly staff, I couldn't fault anything. I will definitely be booking again on my next Fiji holiday

I’ve thought about this review a fair bit. I’ve been debating between a 2 and a 3 but decided on 3 because the island is beautiful. It’s long - sorry. The cruise to the island via south sea cruises: check in early but overall smooth. The arrival on the island we were told the underwater semi submersible was not working. A lot of people on the island at the same time as us (not us thankfully) had booked this tour purely for this attraction. No communication prior from the ground team. Then at about 1pm we got a call for first boarding for it. Its just a lack of communication. The island is disorganised. We were told snorkelling tours departed at 10, 10.30 and 2.30 . At 10.20 we tried to sign up to the 10.30 but staff didn’t know where it was or what was happening, later found out it had been moved to 11 from another guest. Further to this we were told with certainty that at 2.30 the snorkel would take place; we attended at around 2.20 to be safe: it departed at 3. Honestly we wasted a lot of limited time when all we needed was clear communication. It then became apparent that the timetable had been moved to the one displayed without notice. For these reasons I’d personally not recommend this island and the experience to my friends or family when there are other options in the area, price range and timeframe that seem so much better. All that aside: it was worth all the stress. I would recommend this island to families, people on a budget and anyone looking for a relaxing day. The snorkelling is amazing. The open bar is great. Staff are friendly and welcoming. I STRONGLY recommend reef shoes. Or a spare pair: you need them. The sand is mostly coral and it’s harsh on the feet. Also bring snacks. Lunch is at 11.30 and then no free food, limited snacks for purchase and no one likes a hangry person.

South Sea Cruises don't do anything except provide a ferry to Barefoot Kuata. The whole experience is provided by the staff of Barefoot Kuata and they are fabulous. The staff were average at best. The person on the counter couldn't understand that I cancelled my booking with Viator and booked through Expedia even though I gave him my Expedia details and never paid anything through Viator and it showed up as cancelled. We wanted to upgrade to the Capitans Lounge but were told at the counter to ask when boarding. When we asked we were sent down stairs to the booking lady who told us to go back up stairs to the boarding lady. In the end we didn't get anyone to help us and honestly the Capitans lounge isn't that different to downstairs and not worth the upgrade. The transfer is comfortable but nothing special.

It was really good, I felt safe. The sharks were so close. They were down deep but the crew bought them up. Tim was very good and experienced. Some people might find it hard to get in and out of the boat but the crew looked after you. I found it really relaxing. You just jump in the water and chilled. The sharks just came up to you

The boat leaving the marina is a combination of different island day cruises so will make stops to drop off passengers on the way (the same for the return). To get onto Beachcomber itself it's a small boat transfer. On arrival you get a briefing the locations and times for different activities and meals then you're left to your own devices. The island itself is beautiful but not very large so is easy to completely walk on your own (I recommend having some shoes for the rockier areas though). We actually came across the turtle area during our own exploration so didn't worry about doing it "as scheduled" We didn't hear the call for snorkelling despite being in the area so missed the boat. Instead we went out ourselves from the shore and found some good coral and fish life if you were willing to swim out a bit. Just make sure you are a strong swimmer as coming back in against the current was tiring and we were only given the masks and snorkels NOT fins so we had no added assistance. The buffet lunch was simple but very tasty and the bar had a good selection for fair prices. What we enjoyed most was that we really had a FULL day on the island and felt that we could just relax and enjoy "island time" without being rushed. We also lucked out and had beautiful weather and a very quiet island the day of our visit so at times we felt like we had the place practically to ourselves.
