We arranged a visit to the stunning Lunarejo National Park by calling +598 98 571 368. A young couple are homesteading there a growing a tourist business. For $10 we had a guide lead us on a hike up a hill, from which we watched gauchos and dogs herd cattle. We spent the afternoon swimming in the river. The water was a perfect temperature. The only other folks there were campers. Two camp sites on the river overseen by the same couple, had flush toilets and running water. The couple provided firewood. You can also rent a room in their house for $100 per person per night, which includes three meals they assured us would be delicious. It is off the beaten track, beautiful and VERY relaxing. Although Lunrejo is a national park, it did not seem possible to visit it without a guide.

We went on our own, without paying for a guide or lodging. The place is simply spectacular, one of the most beautiful in Uruguay. If you are a nature lover, you can't miss going.
You can enter through the Visitor Center of the Ministry and the Municipality or a little further on directly from the route. The Center closes at 4 p.m., but we went at 2:30 p.m. and there was no one there. It is still useful to pass by if you are coming from a distance because of its amenities, benches, table, wifi, etc.
We did the route in one goal and we had no problems, but keep in mind to have the vehicle in good condition and go slowly, because the roads are basically mud and stones (lots of stones).
We were delighted and fully recommend the visit, even if it is just to spend the day.
PS: don't stop paying attention to the stones!

Excellent hike for those who enjoy natural, rugged landscapes, seeing native flora and fauna and with medium-low difficulty.
It can be done alone, I recommend hiring local guides, we hired El Gavilan, and guide Santiago, very good service. Best time to go, spring and early summer, and be lucky that it rained a few days before.

Whoever likes nature must visit this unique place in South America.
It is an immense protected area that preserves enormity of native flora and fauna species. Getting into their guts is a magical especially for those of us who live in cities.

The landscape is wonderful but can only be appreciated by taking the walks offered by the different guides. Some of these can only be done on foot or in a 4x4. It is important to check before you go and plan your walks. The owner of the Posada del Lunarejo told us that we would arrange the tours upon arrival and there it turned out that some were not available.

Good to spend one or two nights. Basic room, same with the bathroom.
Good buffet breakfast, nice garden with swimming pool and the attention is correct.
Totally recommended for those who are passing through.
