We kayaked a short distance across slightly choppy waters into the peace and quiet of the mangrove swamps. We took the 6 pm trip, so kayaked into the bioluminescent bay as the sun was falling, so we were able to see the mangroves, as well as a heron and lizard. Then we watched the stars come out in the secluded bioluminescent lagoon. The trip back in darkness through the mangroves following the luminescent rings on the kayak ahead was a lot of fun.
The bioluminescence was not very spectacular, just white streaks of light in the water (swimming in the bioluminescent bay in the Caymans was much more exciting, with multi-coloured streaks of colour whenever you moved) but seeing the stars emerge and kayaking in the mangroves in the dark made the the trip worthwhile.
The guides were very entertaining as well as very professional, taking care that everyone was safe.

Manolo was our guide and he did a great job. We were a party of three so two of us were in one boat and we had an experienced kayaker in a single boat. The entire group was probably about 30. You paddle out through the mangroves where we saw iguanas and water birds on our way out to the lake where we got to see sunset. We had a peaceful time on the lake waiting for the sun to set and it to get dark enough for us to see the bio luminescence. The bio luminescence was very interesting couldn’t get pictures of it with our cameras because it wasn’t that bright but it was easy to see and fun. We paddled back in pitch black but that was easier than I thought. On our way back in there were things jumping all around us that we couldn’t see but could hear the splashes. Manolo told us it was tarpon and shrimp. Sure enough several minutes later one of the shrimp the jump into the boat and landed right on me, fortunately I knew it was a shrimp so I didn’t totally freak out in the dark with something scrabbling on me. It was a great trip. If you don’t want to take as long a trip you could just go out after dark, some people were going out as we were going in so I assume they just went out to the bay saw the bio luminescence and went back. But I enjoyed paddling out and seeing all the iguanas roosting in the trees and the birds and watching the sunset.

Our original tour was canceled on short notice, however I managed to get ahold of Glass Bottom PR Tours by phone for the same tour at a better price. They had openings for us still available that night and were willing and able to help us in short notice with only 3 hours before the tour started. The only thing I didn't like about the tour was the multiple tour groups all trying to get down the same canal to the bay, but that was to be expected and we still had an amazing experience.

Going into this tour we expected the bay to be a lot like the photos that surface online ~bright and glowing. It was anything but. You have to move your hand in the water rapidly or move the paddles rapidly in order to see the organisms glow. It’s still a neat thing to see but it’s nothing like pictures of a glowing bay online. ALSO- note that you will be required to get wet waist down to get in and out of the kayaks. Ours was filled with water when we got in so for me it was a chilly ride. Bring towels and dry clothes if you have a long drive home. Don’t bring anything to the tent with you besides a waterproof camera or bag for your phone because they will not allow you to bring it along. The tours guides were friendly and made us feel safe.

We had been anticipating this bioluminescent tour as a highlight of our week in PR, especially after talking with someone else who raved about it(found out after that they used a different glass bottom kayak company). Initially, we kayaked at night in darkness down a long canal under the silhouette of Mangrove trees overhead. This part of the trip was wonderful. We then arrived at an opening into a big body of water where the tour guide asked us to line up side by side (15 kayaks in total) Although the night sky was beautiful, there was light pollution from the nearby community and so the sky was not even as dark as the night sky where I live on the outskirts of a city. And so, in order to make the "sky" darker, the guide had all of us participants pull a black tarp from each side over our heads, ultimately making it so all 15 kayaks were side by side under the tarp. He then told us to swoosh our hand around in the water next to the side of our kayak to see if we could get the water to light up with the phytoplankton. We saw some small flickers of light but NOTHING like had been described to me by the people who went an a different tour. AND, it was not the best idea to insert one's hand down in the water between your kayak and the one next to you as your hand could easily get crushed between the kayaks!! The people I had spoken to who had gone on the other tour told me the glass bottom of their boat along with the trail left by their oars while paddling was lit up with florescent lights the whole time they were paddling. I was expecting so much more and truly, this tour was expensive and a big disappointment. I would advise anyone who wishes to go on a tour to do thorough research first and make sure that you get on the right tour!!

Our family of 6, ranging in age from 11 to 47 absolutely loved this tour. The glass bottom kayaks are definitely the best way to experience the bioluminescent bay, and all the people we dealt with were wonderful. Julie took the time to answer all my questions when booking our tour and our guide Manolo was as funny as he was knowledgeable. I highly recommend booking a bio bay glass bottom kayak tour with this company.

My friends and I had a great experience with this company! We got a text the night before offering us $10 off per person because the bioluminescence wasn’t super bright the day before, which we decide to take. Then when we showed up we were nervous because a GIANT group of noisy middle school kids got there just as we did, but the company pulled us aside and gave us our own guide, who was super knowledgeable and fun. He gave us a constellation education in addition to teaching us about the plankton. The ride through the canal back was a little hectic with all of the other tour companies trying to come through at the same time but we made it work. All in all a great experience thanks in large part to our guide Bradley!

We loved our kayaking tour to the bioluminescent bay. Going though the mangrove channels was magical, with iguanas perched on the mangroves and the sounds of birds. The guides were extremely competent and helpful and funny. I recommend taking the 6:00 tour instead of the 8:00 tour, because we loved that it was light out still one direction so that we could see everything. Definitely worth it!

Let me start by saying the young people who run these tours are remarkable!!! Very professional and very kind. I would recommend them wholeheartedly.
May I go on go say that this tour is not for older folks, the faint of heart, the no-outdoors types or fist-time kayakers. We paddled thru mangrove canals for about 30 minutes to get to the bay. Circled up, put our hands in the water to see the plankton sparkle then paddled back out they even darker mangrove canals for about 40 minutes.
If this company offers any other trips, I would recommend them without reservation. This trip, however, was much more harrowing and more underwhelming than we had anticipated.

This group seems similar to what the other local guides offered. I don't think you will go wrong with them if you choose to do this night time excursion, but don't expect it to be very bright. I have seen bioluminescence before, so I knew what to expect in general. I was lucky to go when there was a new moon, so it was pretty dark, but there is still light from buildings off in the distance that interfered with the experience. The biggest issue I had was the 20 minute paddle through the mangroves we had to do to get the bay for the bioluminescence. At times, this was pitch dark and hard to follow the boats in front of you. If you are an experienced paddler, I recommend getting as close to the guide as possible because there will be paddlers in the group that do not know how to paddle and they will lead you right into the mangroves, which can be frustrating. All the companies that go to this bay have the same path, be prepared to feel like you're on the interstate during rush hour.

We will be going on the excursion from a cruise and our ship leaves at 11 pm. Will us be able to make it back in time? What's the timeline like with transportation? Thanks~~

Yes, you should be able to make it back to your boat. However, I would call to confirm.
