Less than 30 minutes away from Jamaica's cruise hub in Falmouth is the Hampden Estate Rum Tour. Journey into the heart of a working distillery established in the 1750s, explore the picturesque grounds surrounding the Great House and sample our award winning rums - Rum Fire and Hampden Estate Gold. On this tour you will: - Travel through the rural Jamaican countryside, pass sugar cane fields, and enjoy the magnificent landscape and views. - As you approach Hampden Estate you will appreciate why the early Scottish settlers ventured here to seek their fortunes in sugar and rum. - Enjoy a hearty Jamaican welcome, and sip on a smooth rum punch while you learn a little about Jamaica, Hampden's rich history, and the mysteries of rum making. - Take a guided walk through the grounds and visit the Distillery to see how our rum continues to be made very much like it was done 260 years ago. - Return to the Visitors Center for rum sampling, souvenir shopping, lunch of jerk pork or jerk chicken with festivals and to rap with our tour guides. - Leave Hampden with a sense of satisfaction that you just experienced a taste of authentic Jamaica.

We visited Appleton Estates a number of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so were eager to check out a different rum distillery when we were nearby in Trelawney. Hampden is a completely different kind of experience – much less glitzy and more of an inside look at a working distillery.

Our tour guide started us with a round of rum punches and an informative presentation about the history of Jamaica and rum production. From there, we toured the grounds, including the beautiful grand house where the owners have lived (we couldn’t go inside because it is still used by the family on weekends), and on into the distillery itself. Our guide explained every part of the rum production process along the way.

At the end of the tour, we had the opportunity to taste two of the rums made at Hampden – a gold rum and a white overproof. Both were quite good. Our server explained both rums and was highly entertaining. There’s a small gift shop, where you can buy the rums, as well as other souvenirs.

You can also purchase lunch as part of the tour. We skipped this as we were heading to lunch with a Jamaican friend.

Be aware that the roads to Hampden are very rough. The drive from A1 took a long time, as our driver had to slowly negotiate potholes pretty much the whole way.

This Tour was booked through Karandas Tours. Our driver, Donald was very personable and was great at pointing out all points of interest along the way to the Hampden Estate. Once there, our guide Steve did a great job of the tour of the rum factory and the stunning old estate (all restored with a 25 person hot tub-umm pool?). We were able to see the whole process of the single pot still method and lots of tasting along the way. Their lab manager, Mr. Grant, was great at explaining technical details and the differences between rums. To top it all off, we were served a really good jerk chicken lunch on the grounds (thank you Jennifer and Junior!), accompanied by- you guessed it- rum punch!

Hampden is a gem of Jamaican rum. The tour was hard to organize, as most agencies only try to sell the Appleton Rum Tour. We set up the tour by ourselves (call Hampden and call a taxi), and we were not disappointed! With a small group of four and an awesome guide (Steven), we could tour the production facility and taste our favorite Jamaican rum.
All together a must-do for all rum lovers staying in Montego Bay and surroundings!

The grounds and countryside are stunning Rum punch and tadting rum was fairly generous
The tour was $45 each and certainly not worth it. Although friendly our guide did not seem to have an in depth knowledge of intricacies of rum processing. The tour felt rushed. It was about 35 mins
Afterwards our guide was quite persistent about getting tipped. He followed us to our vehicle for a tip.
I'd suggest that anyone paying for the tour should get a decent discount on rum purchased.
I have not been on any rum tours before but I have been to lots of breweries, wineries and distilleries. This tour was more expensive and less interesting than what I have previously experienced

Hello, We do apologize for the negative experience you had. We pride ourselves on giving our Guests a wonderful educated experience, one not rushed in any way. In addition, it is our policy that no guide should ask ( directly or indirectly for tips ). I assure you that after our investigation the guide will be reprimanded. We had a wonderful tour of Hampden Estate in December 2021. Shelly Ann explained the history of Jamaica and the estate, showed us the process of making rum from start (sugar cane) to finish (tasting), and answered all of our many questions along the way.

The estate is beautiful, and it's in part of Jamaica we wouldn't have seen if not for the chance to visit.

And if you have the opportunity to buy a rum cake in the gift shop, do it!

It's a difficult trek to get to this hidden gem but it's worth it. We booked Jaital tours because of great reviewsband they did not dissapoint. Located right at the Trewlany border, Hampden Distullery and Estate is about 13 miles from Montego Bay resorts, though will take a hour to travel to. Terrain extremely bumpy. However our driver Brian kept us engaged with history and background. Upon arrival Steve gave the best greeting, welcome drink, and introduction. The tour that followed was an amazing way to spend a day. Steve has all the details and information. Jennifer provided an amazing meal with the tour of jerk chicken and jerk pork. Visited gift shop and picked up the distillers edition. Fantastic day.

We’ve been visiting Hampden Estate in January 2015 and had an absolutely fantastic tour. As a rum lover & collector myself I’ve visited many distilleries before but none of them were as authentic as the Hampden tour. We had a very warm welcome with a short introduction to some historic facts and the rum production in general - along with a decent rum punch of course. :) The tour through the distillery was amazing. Amazing due to the fact that nothing is „brushed up“ for tourists & tours. This is a running distillery as it is with all it’s patina.

If you visit Appleton on Jamaica you’ll just see their pot- & column-stills from quite a distance and some barrels without being able to take a single picture with your cam - and you’ll see their huge shop of course. At Hampden instead you can literally touch & smell everything in the process, from mixing, to fermentation, to the stills and even see their dunder „graveyard“ (you’ll be able to decode this when you’ve been there;). My personal opinion is: if you’re a rum connoisseur you HAVE TO visit this place! Again, I’ve seen many distilleries so far but this one and their special rum making process is just awesome.

After the tour we’ve had a nice tasting of their products in their little but very cosy „tasting room“. The overproof „Rum Fire“, their house brand, is also something unique as it has a whole lot of fruitiness & complexity in it with a huge alcoholic punch, without being peppery. It’s even smooth compared to other overproof rums. The „Gold“ rum has all of that what I said about the „Rum Fire“ but is even smoother with it’s 80 proof.

The only one „downside“ is probably that Hampden is located in a quite remote area of the island and hard to find if you are driving there by yourself. We’ve had a driver that took us to there (which is also wise as you’ll taste a lot of rum;) and even he had to ask several times to find this place. But the hassle of getting there is absolutely worth the visit.

All about the Hampden Estate Rum Tour - Falmouth, Jamaica

We were staying at Silver Sands, near Duncans & were looking for something in our local area that gave us a feel of the "real" Jamaica. Last time we were in Jamaica, we had been introduced to the locally made "Rum Fire." As we were talking about a Rum Factory Tour on the way to our Villa from the Airport, our driver (Guy from Junta) mentioned the Hampden Estate Tour. He told us where it was and that they were the ones who made "Rum Fire." It immediately sparked our interest!

We had talked about going across the Island to one of the other Rum tours, but considering the distance (& the fact that it was Rum Fire!), this worked out perfect for us. To be honest, the cost to get IN the tour was a bit pricey but for the quality of the tour and all things considered (transportation costs, etc), we felt it was WELL WORTH IT, in the end.

The transportation cost was MUCH LESS than going across to the "other" tour - and our day was only half spent. It would have been an all day trip the other way. All-in-all our total cost & time - we saved about $25 each (total transportation & entrance fee) and we still had 1/2 day to go back to Silver Sands to do whatever we wanted. Great deal all around!

So.... This is what we found. It is exactly one hour drive from Silver Sands. If you are on a cruise and dock in Falmouth and are looking for an excursion - THIS IS IT!! Tell your driver or person handling the excursions this is where you want to go. It is about a half hour ride from there. We have been to Dunn's River Falls, the Martha Brae River Rafting and Horse Back riding in the area. This TOPS them all! Along with the Tour, the scenery along the way takes you through sugar cane fields, mountain scenery and the real Jamaica. You will feel like you are ON a "Travel Channel" show.

This tour was right up our alley and what a privilege it was to be the VERY FIRST ones to start their "Official Tour." This is a beautiful Estate, an efficiently run & clean factory, a well-run tour, with a great staff and tasty rum. We began with a glass of their own special rum punch and background history of Jamaica & Hampden. From there we were taken on an informative tour of the grounds & factory by the renovated Great House, family Crypt, barrels of molasses, 200 yr old vats still in use, copper pots for distilling,. . . and much, much more. We were introduced to many of the workers and officials of the factory. (Hardhats are passed out and worn inside the factory)

At the end of the tour, all were given a piece of tasty rum cake, spiced tea, cane juice and several samples of their tasty Rum Fire and Gold. Each had our picture taken with their mascot - JB the John Crow "Buzzard." You each get your own personal rum cake to take with you. We spent an enjoyable time afterwards in lengthy conversation, learning more about the area, factory, history and people we had met.

At the time we were there, they did not have Credit Card capabilities, so you may need to take cash with you. You'll want to purchase some of their wonderful Rum Fire & Rum Gold and they have their rum cake in full size in a great tin to take with you. (I will try & update should this change)

If you are looking for something with a "Carnival" atmosphere - this isn't for you. But if you are looking for beautiful lush surroundings, a history of Jamaica, insight into a well-run factory, and lovely tour guides - THIS is the tour for you! Because along with learning how the rum is made, you also get a great lesson in local history. If you're like us and enjoy a bit of the old with the new . . . what a great combination! Really, after all, in the end. . . it IS all about the rum and it just doesn't get any better than that. A must DO on your next visit to the area.

P.S. and as a special note: the last "un" official tour to be taken before it opened to the public, was the former Prime Minister of Jamaica. So, what better company were we "almost" in than 'near' Royalty? Not really Royalty, but they sure treated us like Royalty!

Hampden produces great rum, and as others have mentioned, the distillery provides an unadulterated view of the process. That being said, our tour and tour guide was quite lackluster. We started our tour in an old barn-type building with a nice history on the country and the estates while sampling a tiny cup of rum punch. Our guide was a bit disengaged and did not even introduce herself by name, but she did a good job of following COVID-19 safety protocols and wearing a mask etc. We then visited some of the working part of the distillery and was greeted by some employees - all was fairly interesting. We returned to the barn for our "tasting experience," which was two tiny sips (half a shot, probably) of (1) their lowest end product, and (2) an extremely high proof rum starter.
The gift shop is a bit dusty and sparse but did have some unique items for purchase. Sadly, our tour guide/host could not be bothered to wrap items like glasses properly and separately, so we returned home to find some things broken.
Hampden Estates is located in a very remote location which unpaved, rocky roads. We hired a driver (Byron's Jamaica Tours) - definitely would not recommend trying to navigate the roads yourself as an inexperienced tourist.
For the true rum aficionado, the visit is still probably worthwhile, but the admission of $38.50 USD pp, not including the cost of transportation, is super steep for what you get.

We had a personal tour of the estate and distillery for our group of four by an excellent guide. We now know what dunder is and what esters are. Very good rum punch on arrival. A walk aroung the estate and distillery. Then lunch of really good jerk chicken (or pork) and festival. Then some rum tasting to round off an excellent couple of hours. So glad we chose this estate over the more commercial Appleton estate tour.
