About
Less than 30 minutes away from Jamaica's cruise hub in Falmouth is the Hampden Estate Rum Tour. Journey into the heart of a working distillery established in the 1750s, explore the picturesque grounds surrounding the Great House and sample our award winning rums - Rum Fire and Hampden Estate Gold. On this tour you will: - Travel through the rural Jamaican countryside, pass sugar cane fields, and enjoy the magnificent landscape and views. - As you approach Hampden Estate you will appreciate why the early Scottish settlers ventured here to seek their fortunes in sugar and rum. - Enjoy a hearty Jamaican welcome, and sip on a smooth rum punch while you learn a little about Jamaica, Hampden's rich history, and the mysteries of rum making. - Take a guided walk through the grounds and visit the Distillery to see how our rum continues to be made very much like it was done 260 years ago. - Return to the Visitors Center for rum sampling, souvenir shopping, lunch of jerk pork or jerk chicken with festivals and to rap with our tour guides. - Leave Hampden with a sense of satisfaction that you just experienced a taste of authentic Jamaica.

- J StarOwatonna, Minnesota12 contributionsAuthentic Jamacian RumGo back in time to this rum factory! We had a very small group tour the estate, which was very nice. Very informative tour. Just amazing how old the factory is, but can produce such a great product. Grounds were lovely. Peacocks perched in the trees and walking around. I didn't give it a "5" rating because the road there was terrible! (We hired Rasstar Tours and there were only 4 of us, but I had to move to the front as it's a rough road.)Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 20, 2024
- Bookish626Saint Louis, Missouri22 contributionsHampden tour off the beaten pathTook a private tour of the Hampden estate including the rum factory, lunch, and rum tasting. Had a fantastic tour guide…very knowledgeable and fun. This factory tour is authentic…nothing like the brewery or factory tours from big multinationals. Highly recommend this tour if you have a half day.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 9, 2024

Everything from the history, culture, and manufacturing was covered and shown in a fun and exciting way. The jerk chicken and mangos were amazing, as well as the rum tasting. The grounds and countryside are stunning Rum punch and tadting rum was fairly generous
The tour was $45 each and certainly not worth it. Although friendly our guide did not seem to have an in depth knowledge of intricacies of rum processing. The tour felt rushed. It was about 35 mins
Afterwards our guide was quite persistent about getting tipped. He followed us to our vehicle for a tip.
I'd suggest that anyone paying for the tour should get a decent discount on rum purchased.
I have not been on any rum tours before but I have been to lots of breweries, wineries and distilleries. This tour was more expensive and less interesting than what I have previously experienced

Upon arriving to the Hampden Estate we were greeted by resident peacocks and Steve who spent a long time showing us around the Estate. It’s a gorgeous property and a very educational experience. There were only 2 other people on our tour which was amazing. We were told the days shops come in to port are much busier so we were grateful for the slow day. The tour explained so much about the history of the Estate and was so fun!! Steve was great about telling us so many details and really making us want to learn more. We had lunch (jerk chicken or pork) and some fried dough like dish. It was all very tasty. After lunch we tasted some rum and were shown a very small shop to purchase any rum or hot sauce. There were just a handful of options and were not pushy at sales at all. Overall Steve was amazing, the experience was great, and DH says way better than Appleton tour (I’ve never been).

Shelly Ann was a fantastic tour guide. We had a long drive up to the estate, where she provided a brief history of Jamaica and how the rum making process became central to the economy. The estate is gorgeous and very instagrammable. The peacocks are also a nice touch. The rum factory tour was informative and fascinating. We were provided with a delicious Jamaican lunch of jerk chicken and festival before our tasting. The overproof rum is not for the faint of heart. I enjoyed both samples. They have a gift shop on premises to purchase, rum, Jamaican coffee and general merchandise. The roads up to the estate are in terrible shape. However the driver did a fantastic job navigating the potholes. He even made a joke of it. You will get to see a genuine slice of Jamaican country life on the way so I would still recommend this tour.

We had the best time at Hampden Estate! Shelly Ann tailored her information to what our group wanted to know more about. We were with a family of 5 and then us as a couple, so it was a small group, which also made it nice! After a rum punch and a bit of a history lesson about Jamaica, sugar cane, and the distillery, we made our way across the estate and learned more along the way. We viewed and discussed their rum-making process, which hasn't changed in hundreds of years. After making our way back, the family went to their on site lunch while we went to the outdoor bar for our personalized rum tasting. The grounds are gorgeous and I especially loved seeing peacocks up close and personal! One even followed me to the bathroom LOL! The drive to Trelawny from Montego Bay is also quite the experience - be sure to find a driver that will give you information and history as you make your way there!

It's a difficult trek to get to this hidden gem but it's worth it. We booked Jaital tours because of great reviewsband they did not dissapoint. Located right at the Trewlany border, Hampden Distullery and Estate is about 13 miles from Montego Bay resorts, though will take a hour to travel to. Terrain extremely bumpy. However our driver Brian kept us engaged with history and background. Upon arrival Steve gave the best greeting, welcome drink, and introduction. The tour that followed was an amazing way to spend a day. Steve has all the details and information. Jennifer provided an amazing meal with the tour of jerk chicken and jerk pork. Visited gift shop and picked up the distillers edition. Fantastic day.

I absolutely was blown away by my tour of the estate and distillery. I was part of a Royal Caribbean shore excursion so it includeda light lunch as well. Peppie was our guide for the walking portion, he was so engaging. I love learning and I was not disappointed at all. We were greeted off the bus by a cup of Jamaican Rum Punch...and it packs a literal punch! I had thought I was well versed in rum as it is my favorite spirit. I was woefully mistaken! Jamaican rum has a totally different profile and I was not prepared for what was about to happen to my mouth. After the tour I learned why. There is a thing called Jamaican funk that I had never heard of and I will never forget. Regardless, I did learn that my taste buds are not ready for all that funk on a regular basis.
The distillery is old school so please do not go in thinking it is going to be shiny and sparkling.
If you love to learn about history, culture and life in general, please schedule a tour for this wonderful estate. Be prepared for an educational experience!

We had a wonderful tour of Hampden Estate in December 2021. Shelly Ann explained the history of Jamaica and the estate, showed us the process of making rum from start (sugar cane) to finish (tasting), and answered all of our many questions along the way.
The estate is beautiful, and it's in part of Jamaica we wouldn't have seen if not for the chance to visit.
And if you have the opportunity to buy a rum cake in the gift shop, do it!

I had a wonderful experience recently on a Hampden Estate rum tour. It was easy to book the tour via email and the team responded and confirmed our booking quickly. Steve, our tour guide, was fantastic! He was extremely knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about the history of the estate and rum making processes. He made our tour so enjoyable! The only suggestion l would make to improve this tour is to have more than two types of rum for guests to sample.

We booked the "Rum Tour" as a day trip during our cruise. We drove through the hinterland in a minibus from Montego Bay. The journey took about 1 hour. The old farmhouse is a great photo opportunity. After that there was a short talk about what exactly is produced here. Essentially the essences and rum for other manufacturers are produced here. There are only two of their own rums that you can taste. But the rum punch on offer was much better. :-)
The tour through the old distillery, which at 250 years old is probably the oldest on the island, is really interesting. The alcohol and the smells are literally in the air. After a good 2 hours we had finished everything and had one or two rum punches. We didn't have a meal here because that was planned for our return trip to the ship. Overall it was very interesting here though.

This was an incredible adventure. Experienced through a Disney Cruise excursion. We were so blessed to have the most wonderful guide named Steve. He has an incredible amount of knowledge for Jamaica and, most specifically, for the distillery. He allowed us to ask questions and he was so courteous. I’ve been to Jamaica a few times and this was probably my best experience with an excursion. I would definitely do it again.

Does anyone know the cost of arranging a private taxi for a return trip from the cruise ship port to Hampden Estate? We're booking a tour directly with Hampden, just wondering if we can arrange transportation for a lower price on our own, versus their pp cost. Thanks!
Written October 28, 2019
We were staying at the Excellence Oyster Bay in Falmouth and booked our transport though Good Vibes it cost $90 so a bit cheaper than the $110 quoted by the Distillery. We had a great time including the best jerk chicken lunch. Would recommend this tour

Hello. We are coming into Falmouth on a cruise ship next week and we really want to go out to the Hampden Estate. But we can't find a tour operator that offers transportation out to the Estate.
How did you get out there from the pier? Who do you recommend?
Thanks for any help,

We emailed hampden estate, and they sent a minivan to the cruise terminal for our party of four. The tour was $50 pp and the transfer was $20pp. Cost was comparable with one of the basic cruise tours, however this was better value as it included the lunch and was much more atmpspheric. Pick up point was inside the terminal area just beyond the shops in the minibus car park.
Tripadvisor don't allow me to include a web address however if you google Hampden, there is an info address which you can use to send them a mesage.

Hell Donna T,
Thanks for contacting us. Our welcome area where a part of the tour is conducted is accessible by wheelchair users also a designated restroom. However, the complete tour is not suitable for wheelchair users because of the uneven grass surface and steps.
Best regards,
