About
La Maddalena Archipelago National Park is a geomarine protected area consisting of a group of islands situated in the north-east of the coast of Gallura, in the stretch of sea between Sardinia and Corsica known as Bocche di Bonifacio. These islands – except for La Maddalena Island housing the homonymous town and characterized by a significant human presence – are entirely deserted or scattered with small human settlements, like in Caprera and Santa Maria Islands.

Hi I'm Paola, the island of La Maddalena is beautiful, but I think they are ruining it. Monti da' Rena beach is beautiful and they are ruining it by bringing a lot of boats to shore with motor dinghy, not even rowing, boat tourists, all the time, leaving a smell of diesel in the sea and in the air. I would also like to point out the anchorage of all boats that ruin the seabed. They also installed a large restaurant bar structure with very loud music. It has always been a quiet and protected beach, even from bathers.
Money must not ruin everything, stop or it will never be the beautiful Magdalena with its beautiful beaches and the beautiful dream sea. It will become a squeezed and rotten lemon to throw away and tourists will go somewhere else leaving a devastated island.

La Maddalena is truly a beautiful place. The town with its historic center full of shops and clubs is very characteristic and evocative. Wonderful beaches and coves you could do one every day, being an island on an island if there is a lot of wind you can move according to the wind the beaches can be reached in a few minutes by car. Breathtaking landscapes. But there are sore points to say:
If there are adverse weather conditions such as the mistral at almost 100km/h (as happened to us) you are confined here, even the "sheltered" beaches are affected. So we are all in the centre. The ferry to go from Maddalena to Palau there and back costs 45 euros for 3 people without a car, a bit expensive I would say. Some places have very high prices, but if you search you can also find some places with affordable prices here. In short, a paradise in all respects to be seen at least once in a lifetime, taking into account the weather first and foremost

Certainly the environment is endowed with natural beauties which, however, in my opinion, are not exploited and valorised adequately. I have been coming to these places for ten years and I have noticed continuous decay: I have the impression that nothing is being done to maintain and enhance the natural resources, which in the absence of adequate care will continue to be depleted. I'm sorry about all this because I don't think it's fair to all those who, whether residents or tourists, love these places. It is necessary to intervene as soon as possible to conserve natural beauty and improve its usability.

This for me was the highlight of the trip. After a lot of effort, we managed to get a collective boat trip, thanks to a very friendly and attentive attendant at the Marina, who went around several points. He stopped for some time on La Madalena Island and at several beach spots (Spaggia). The beauty of the sea surrounding the rocks is stunning! The tip is to book on the day: when it's cloudy the sea isn't as blue as in the photos, but... you run the risk of not getting a spot without a reservation.

Decided to stay in Maddalena for 3 nights, on our way to Costa Smeralda. Great decision. Much better destination than the coast. Plus if you love visiting, cycling, hiking, secluded beaches, everything is there. I would recommend to not make the mistake of only visiting for the day. The village has a lot to offer, plenty of great places to just sit have a coffee, great restaurants. Plus staying ion Maddalena, gives you the chance to visit the city, the island, get on Caprera for hiking from fabulous coves to coves. We did not do the boat day tours, though no time. Maddalena was a highlight of our trip

the visit to the archipelago at the beginning of September was a daydream, visited by land and sea, having seen all the most important beaches and coves and others not even mentioned, disappointed by the famous pink beach which has absolutely nothing pink left. Caprera, wonderful and wild, hosts the house and a museum on Garibaldi and the most beautiful coves of the archipelago.

We stayed in Cala Cotticio, of course we went with a very professional and very kind Guide (Simone) (Guide is necessary because it is a protected area) and we started the trail at 7:45. In all we were 15 people. The trail measures 1.1km and it takes about half an hour to walk. Then around noon we climbed up, the climb is tougher than the descent but calmly there you can do it. The Guide will explain the peculiarities of the territory and many other things. About the beach, it is very clean! Un paradiso! It's worth going. Be free to ask the hiker questions. In general everything is very nice!

though the weather was threatening rain, my wife, Maria, and I rented a Vespa and toured from La Madellena to Isola Caprera. What a treat! The road has little traffic and takes you to many surprising vistas. We stopped at the Mineral Museum and had a tremendous session with Maria, our guide. Because of the weather, we did not stop to explore the plentiful and enticing hiking trails, sadly. Afterwards, back on La Madellena, we had a great lunch at an Agritourismo that was soon closing down due to being late in the season. Well worth the trip!

We decided to take the ferry to La Maddalena from Palau. It was 4 of us plus a car and paid about 64 euros roughly. It was not very busy on board so we had a relaxing ride over. The town centre is very nice and is worth strolling thru. We then decided to drive around the island. While it was interesting and relaxing, it was not exceptional in any way. We stopped at several beaches but nothing stood out about them. While it was a nice enough day out, it did not live up to the hype and I do not believe you will miss out by not going. Maybe taking a boat trip to the other islands would have been better. I do highly recommend a boat trip to the Golf of Orosei!

It is difficult to explain in words the beauty of the sea that we saw during the independent visit of the archipelago by dinghy. A fantastic experience and the brightest turquoise ever seen. Certainly the crowding (more than understandable during the central week of August) does not allow you to enjoy the beauty of the landscapes 100% but I can truly guarantee that it is the most beautiful thing I did during my stay in Sardinia!

O esclusivamente in barca?
Grazie

Could you please tell me how and where I can hire a small boat for a family of 5 people.
Thanks in advance,
Mauro

Hi Mauro,
We hired a dinghy through Albatros service at the harbor of Palau. They were in the strip of boat rental services just in front of the harbor. They have various sizes of boats. Our boat for a day (enough space for 4) was €105 and a full tank was about €30. Enjoy La Maddalena!

Written September 5, 2018

Col gommone in 40 minuti arrivi all'isola di budelli. Ciao
