Very laid back lovely town and area. Without the non Panama feel of Boquete. That said I don't think I would have appreciated Cerro Punta without first seeing Boquete but in retrospect I wish we had spent all of our 6 days here.
The fields on the hillsides are lovely, the birding fantastic (worth paying to go with Ito but book ahead, he's very much in demand and for good reason: he find birds!)
This is much more an authentic Panamanian experience.

A beautiful drive from Volcan, spectacular scenery, and great hospitality.
It is one of the most fertile areas in Chiriqui and the strawberries and cream are to die for.

We were staying in Cerro Punta and visited Cerro Azul for a few hours. This is a natural and rich farming area in the plentiful volcanic soil. There are great views in all directions. This is the real Panama Highlands - not the sadly, commercialized Boquete on the other side of the volcano. There are a lot of market type stalls at the big cross roads in the middle of town. A very relaxed area. This is where you meet up with Ito if your doing 1 of his bird watching tours.

Beautiful area with amazing birds and scenic views. I only spent a day but was impressed with the areas beauty. I would definitely explore the possibility of spending more time on my next visit.

Take your time, even if you have to pull over and let others pass. The views of the mountains and volcano are breathtaking. All the growing field are amazing as they go up the sides of the mountains and it is hard to imagine the work that it must take to plant and harvest on the steep hillsides. Be sure to go all the way to the end of the road and take time to walk through the little shops. Buy some strawberry jam and fresh strawberries to enjoy later.
