Memorable Experience
Feb 2019
Recently we spent a couple of weeks in Grenada, Nicaragua. One of our most memorable experiences during our stay was a tour of Jefferson Shriver’s Gaia Estate just outside of Diriamba. Visiting Gaia we learned a great deal about the care and feeding of coffee trees and vanilla plants and a little bit about farming turmeric as well. It is the latest crop to be introduced to the property. The idea is diversity; it smooths out the ups and downs of marketing farm products.
Jefferson raises his crops on the ground floor of a three-story forest. To say the place is bird friendly is an understatement. Birds abound in the forest, so many species that birders from far and wide come to spend time listening and watching. The space is drop-dead beautiful and the forest pure and healthy. Naturally, the products produced here are of the utmost quality. The lunch we enjoyed during our visit attested to that.
Jefferson Shriver is knowledgeable, articulate, and entertaining. He has lived in Nicaragua for more than twenty years and has accumulated experience worldwide as a consultant on projects involving sustainable agriculture. You are bound to be impressed with his farm and the products Gaia offers.

Make sure to call before making the trip out....went all way out because the site says open each day till 5.... But it is NOT....after getting there the only person there was a Cartier who said that we didn't have a reservation so they didn't know we were coming so could not do anything....such a waste to go all way in vain.

Love Gaia Estate!! Drink coconut water from the palm tree to your hands, in the coconut, with fresh and organic bananas. Great bird watching place and very unique, authentic and real coffee tour, you learn a lot about the coffee, and the price includes a pound a fresh roasted coffee!

excellent birding and coffee tour

Spent two days on the estate birding and learning about shade grown organic bird friendly coffee with Jefferson, the owner, and 9 other people. Jefferson is equally well versed in his coffee operation and bird identification, as well as being a heck of a nice guy. Had some of the best coffee ever and it was a beautiful, fun experience.I'd recommed it to everyone, bring binoculars, cameras and sturdy walking shoes. He is also partnered with Birds and Beans Coffee
who organized this Birds of Two Worlds tour.

We love Gaia Estate!

We enjoyed a great day at Gaia Estate - the property is beautiful, the owners are super friendly, and the coffee is delicious! It was so interesting to learn about the coffee-making process, and all that's involved in growing coffee in a sustainable way. We always try to buy fair trade, shade grown, organic coffee - but it's not easy to find coffee in the stores that meets all 3 of our criteria. Coffee from Gaia Estate does! We highly recommend a visit to Gaia Estate - it's easy to hike around the property with your guide, you'll see lots of birds and wildlife, and I bet you'll learn something new about coffee! Enjoy your visit!

Great organic coffee experience! (and bird friendly)

If you want to know the whole process to get your cup of coffee, go there! You will get a 5 stars coffee tour, is close by Managua, Granada or San Juan del Sur, and is a very unique place to relax after a really nice hike, or a pretty interesting and fun coffee tour, you got the opportunity to see more birds that any other place i have seen in the pacific of Nicaragua (one of the only bird friendly certified farm. If you want to understand the organic process, this is the place to go, very kids friendly too. You need to book in advance on line (www.gaiaestate.com). Is a great place to go with group and for a day trip. They do learning tours (university kind of courses), and bird tours too. If you want to have food cover by them you have to ask when you book or you will get just coffee, cookies and organic coconut water and bananas.
