Took a day trip with a guide around the island, spent most of the time traveling in the sidecar. We were taken first to the Ban Thung Tuek ancient city site which was the highlight of the tour. Clearly the island was a major stop off point for traders coming from India and the Middle East and on to China and the Far East. Unfortunately the info centre has suffered from lack of tourists and is in a sad state with the ceilings fallen down. The excavated sites are in good shape so worth a visit if you can find it. After a very bumpy ride across country on farm tracks a short stop at a pond to see water lilies which are rare and only found here and one other island locally in the world.
On the rest of the tour round the island we saw water buffaloes 🐃, a beautiful beach 🏖 a ferry port and shrimp farm at the north of the island. Lunch at Sunee restaurant was great, Tom Yum Goong with huge Prawns from the Shrimp Farm and a couple of beers delicious.
You can catch a small ferry or the car ferry across, if you are on foot it’s not worth going as the ferry port has nothing to offer, the trip across is about 10 minutes.

An absolute fantasic remote island. Fantasic beaches everywhere and noone(!) there. North part with Sunrise beach was great. We rented moped and it was very safe traffic. Very kind and helpful residents.

Koh Kho Khao Island - a almost unexplored half island on the Andaman side just above KohLak. Our beach was almost like Thai beaches 30years ago, we took a 2hour walk and meet only 1 tourist and a dog. We stayed at Andaman Princess Resort, great pool, friendly staff, nothing negative at all. A small /short road through the village with some genuin restuarants. You must visit MrSid at Chilli and the most humble staff and fantastic food at BananaGarden. Some of the BEST Thai food ever eaten. Rent a moped/scooter and go to the very northwest coner of the island, you will find one of the most beautiful beaches Nok Nah Beach, the only sign of life is a small beach restaurant otherwise it´s you, sand and eternity. Go visit the paradise before it´s to late....

Our third visit to the island, and not the last. A nice spot, perfect with kids where you can calm down and just relax. People on the island is genuine and very friendly. A few restaurants is available in the harbor and if it gets too lonely, Khao Lak is only 40 min away. We have made several friends on the island that helps us when we return. The best hotel is C&N. Small and nice bungalows. I recomend to rent a scooter and just drive around because there is almost no traffic on the island. The Sunset Beach in the north is fine and I do recommend a day at the Hapla beach in the middle of the island. Best restaurant is Koi on the west side in harbor village.

We took a motorbike over to the island on a long tail boat, that was the best part of the trip. I had to laugh at the sign that says something like "Welcome to beautiful Koh Kho Khao" there is absolutely nothing beautiful about this island it is run down and dirty and in some parts absolutely deserted. We rode the bike from the pier to the furthest tip of the island where we saw what looked like the remains of some sort of broken down resort on an ok beach.....not impressed, and we didn't see anything on the return trip that made us want to explore more. We have visited a lot of beautiful islands and beaches in Thailand..........this definitely is not one of them.

A place to be if you like a relaxed vacation where you can imagine sometimes to be alone on the very long beach.
No music, no noisy jetskis, only the sea. Wow!
There is not much to see on the island but the beaches are fantastic and it is peacefull.
Good restaurants and nice people.

We stayed at Koh Kho Khao island looking for a romantic relaxing getaway for 4 nights. We weren't disappointed. The largely untouched island is peaceful and relaxing and a welcome relief after staying in Patong for a couple of nights.
We stayed at Cousin Bungalows which is situated right on the beach and we loved or beach bungalows. The accommodation was great value for money - clean, relaxing and modern. Food at the resort was delicious and Monty the manager went out of his way to look after us.
The attractions on the island are spread out so we hired a scooter and visited some of the other resorts and beaches, stopping off for lunch and drinks along the way. There's not much traffic on the island so it's safe and convenient to get around by scooter.
Mamas Kitchen is a 10 min walk to the left of Cousin - there's no Trip Adviser listing yet but it's up there with the best. Dinner at night is by candlelight as Mamas has no electricity. Definitely worth the experience. We had the whole fish fried in lemongrass - amazing.
Local Thai Food at Cousin Bungalow was also surprisingly good and we ate several times at the resort in between lying on the beach.
Indiego Cafe near the pier (also not on Trip Adviser) serves great coffee and homemade muffins baked on premises. Great for a post-breakfast treat.
The beach sunset is dazzling and romantic. The beaches are long and relaxing and clean, although the water isn't that clear. Apparently the tsunami caused some sedimentation and it hasn't cleared since, but it's only murky from sand. However it's still nicer than most Phuket beaches.
Other beaches worth checking out are Sunset and Hupla - north of the island. Worth making the trip and grabbing some lunch.
If you get bored of lying on the beach all day sipping cocktails, then you can arrange for a number of day trips diving or snorkeling at nearby islands, including Similan and Taichai islands.
If you're looking to relax and get away from it all, Koh Kho Khao won't disappoint.

got home after a month travelling round phuket khao koh koh and khao lak
i posted up some pictures and vids from khao lak beaches and the amazing koh kho khao . peak season in the second bay up from south pier [on west coast koh kho khao] - check these out in my pictures / click on my name profile , there was one beach which was about 5k long beach , and we where only ones on it , unbelievable . and it was a stunning gorgeous beach too really soft white and wide . people must at times go there cos there was fresh elephant dung there !! when we where there it was literally days till a new resort was about to start up which is probably now established and running . it was very high end hotel .
we loved exploring round on the scooter , taking trails off to the ancient ruins along dirt tracks and to random beaches , and the 1 main road has to be the most imaculate in thailand and brand new , and pretty much things just link off this to the beaches along dirt tracks most of time . its really not far to go there on the moped from khao lak and really safe roads , a definite fun little drive north for oh i dont know about 30 mins drive along the 1 main road basically , north , to the ferry , and a simple crossing to island . its well signed too ... "FERRY" . paid the 20 baht for each of us upon arrival at harbour , plus 20 extra for the bike on the ferry , but on the way back we just got on a longtail cos its only a tiny journey to island and the same price . well worth going to koh kho khao if you want a low cost day trip on your own £5/250baht a day rental bike , on your own schedule far far away from any crowds and tourists ! just gorgeous !!!
we ate at the taco restaurant , kinda ok mexican . but considering where we where on this tiny island it was pretty decent considering and with lots of good trimmings ! shame they cant get corn chips in phuket tho for nachos hmm .
pick up a free tourist map in most shops , plan the route and go on a litle adventure ;-)

It's remote and off the beaten track with only a few shops and off resort restaurants. Best points: no beach hawkers, no pick ups with loud hailers advertising Thai boxing, bars etc no time share sellers, this is Thailand of old listen to the waves crashing on the beach , grab a cocktail or cold beer and chill out.

Could you recommend somewhere to stay on the island, I'm finding it difficult to locate accommodation, when I put in a search it comes up with hotels in Kho Lak and other resorts?
Many thanks

I loved the Sunset Beach Resort on Koh Kho Khao. You have to get a long tail boat across but it only takes 10 minutes and there are plenty of boats available. This hotel was modern, has a lovely beach, great restaurant and is very reasonably priced. Note is it only open for half the year. The villas are a very high standard. I also stayed in a room and there were also great.

hello
Is it possible to go snorkeling/diving from the Island - how is Water visibility?
Are there some small local markets and/or shops around the villages?
Lone

Hej alle
Er vandets sigtbarhed til snorkling / dykning?
Er der lidt lokale landsbyer med små markeder / butikker (ikke behov for noget stort eller fancy - bare lidt liv at opleve)?
Mvh Lone

Hi, Can you please help me to find a way to get from Krabi airport to Ko Kho Khao?? Please...
Written February 15, 2016
We went from Krabi to Phuket by mini-van. Then Form Phuket to kho kho khao by public bus and longtail. (~400 Baht all in all) Maybe you can get a direct bus connection from Krabi. just go to the main station and ask there. Dont't worry about gettig around here. it's cheap an easy if you choose public Busses and boats.
