We took a train journey from Kandy, through the hill Coutry to ‘Little England’ just shy of four hours in total.

We took the train from Kandy to Hatton, which is approx 3 hours. We were lucky to get a seat because the train was so busy and we only managed to get into the 3rd class section but this was as good as any train...More
We used the old red train and booked in the observation coach. It was absolutely fantastic. A truly wonderful experience. We booked through agents so the tickets were quite pricey. Unfortunately it is impossible to book directly online. You have to go to the station...More

about 2 1/2 hours. I booked the observation car 30 days in advance (about $10US I think). I'm 70, found access and travel easy. Ask often about what platform, lot's of conflicting information from the ticket checker, and the "board"; only the uniformed platform security guy had the right answer.
Not much to see in Galle at the station; take a tuk tuk to the stick fisherman and a tuk tuk tour of the fort - it's big.
