Decided to fly in from Vientiane instead of the long bus trip - glad I did the half hour flight. Would have been dearer but I did get airfare sale price. Town of Phonsavan is not much but markets are interesting to see how locals...More

The various Jar sites are certainly fascinating. Carved from stone and moved to these locations a couple of thousand years ago. I went to sites 1,2 and 3. It is worth visiting a few as they have interestingly different characteristics. I went with a guide...More

Taking the 14-hour round-trip detour to Phonsavan is a gamble, particularly for budget travelers. The town of Phonsavan is definitely not worth visiting unless one plans to see The Plain of Jars. Most tours only take visitors to the first site as many roads are...More

We had minimal fuss hiring a scooter and getting about to the 3 main sites in a day. There were few visitors for this time of year which made it better when we had 2/3 sites to ourselves. Don't miss this on your Laos trip!

The plain(s) of jars must be the most under appreciated sight in south east asia. Apart from maybe 4-5 other westerners and some laotian tourists the whole province seemed empty. What a shame. Rent a motorbike and explore them on your own, stay on the...More

We were undecided if to just take a tuktuk to site 1 or pay for a tour of all 3 sites. We found a driver for £30 for two of us to visit all three sites, you must shop around as the prices vary so...More

We rented an automatic motorbike via our Guesthouse (Nice Guesthouse) for 80.000 kip and we used 15.000 kip gasoline. The lady provided us with a map and a brief route description. I would recommend to go there by motorbike, the roads have just been paved,...More
