Mr. Nouts / "Plain of Jars Travel Agency Sousath" who speeks fluent English, has a large historic knowledge and is more than happy to share it and answer all questions. After this visit we decided to stay a second day and did visit the old capital with the impressive, large burnt Buddha.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 12, 2023

Worth climbing to hill above quarry for the views but it’s 1000 steps (stairs). We stayed at Sipanya Guesthouse, also good.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 21, 2023
- maritimeexplorerNova Scotia, Canada3,964 contributionsWorth the EffortThe Plain of Jars is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Laos that is hard to get to, but well worth the effort. Up until recently no one knew why these huge stone jars were created and even now there is no universal agreement on their purpose. There is still no consensus of who made them. There is no doubt that they are one of the world's most mysterious sites. Located near the city of Phonsavan which has no airport, you need to drive here from Luang Prabang on one of the worst roads in Asia. However, once here, there are quite decent hotels and restaurants. There is no one site that is the Plain of Jars, but rather many. You should definitely visit at least three sites starting with Site One which is the most easily accessible and that is actually on a plain. Other sites are harder to get to, but quite different from Site One. These are often on hill tops and involve hikes through Laotian rice fields. While visiting this area of Laos you will also see many bomb craters from the American bombing campaign that made Laos the most bombed place in history. It's an eye opening experience to realize just how wrong this was and how the hundreds of thousands of unexploded ordnance still affect day to day life in this very poor country.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 12, 2023

I wouldn't go that far, but it is definitely an interesting visit. Afterwards, head to "Bombies" restaurant for the best food in Laos, and the owner's father was actually the guy who opened the plain of jars as a tourist attractionVisited March 2023Written April 26, 2023

Our guide Tey Lassada was fantastic, very knowledgeable and friendly. Please bear in mind that the options & programme might be limited due to weather- and roadconditions. Our schedule was altered during the day because of this, but nontheless we had a wonderful day visiting plain of jars sites and the old capital and the museum. Visited in July 2022. There was a general lack of tourists due to a slow recovery from Covid restrictions, but I was able to book a tour with Mr. Souk. In one full day, we visited all 3 major sites and a local village by minivan. Transportation was comfortable, had a nice local lunch in a rural area, and was not rushed at any of the sites. If you are in or planning to be in the area, I highly recommend contacting Mr. Souk to discuss a tour. He is a local and speaks excellent English.

If you are travelling solo to Plain of Jars, best is to go to main street to negotiate a tuk tuk to bring you to site one. It takes about 25 minutes to the ticket office where there is an exhibition hall with a decent toilet and free drop off to the site 1 entrance. Best to go early in the morning to avoid afternoon heat, bring your lunch and plenty of water. Don't miss the cave and its top to have a panoramic views of Phonsavan. It is picturesque and sacred.

Fantastic day trip around three of the jars sites.
Such a mystery.
Worth the effort to get there.
Tey is an excellent host who speaks English very well and will gout of his way to ensure your needs are met bot on the tour and during your stay.
I visited 3 jars sites, the old capital, rice noodle village and my favourite part was the morning market.
Not much else of interest in Phonsavan but definitely worth putting on your itinerary.

Visited site 1 & 2 with tour guide. Both sites offered completely different experiences. Site 2 was so green and mainly on the top of a hill, site 1 was more barren and spread out on flat and hillside. We visited around lunch time and surprisingly we had site 2 all to ourselves, at site 1 maybe only 15 visitors. Great photo opportunity and definatley among the best things we did in Laos worth the long drive from Luang Prabang to get there

We visited here as part of our trip, with the only downside was the length of time it took to get there (over 6 hours), the mountain scenery was amazing. It is an amazing place to visit and reminded us a bit of Stonehenge in the UK , same time period. We learned a great deal from our guide and saw an amazing sunset.

I booked a tour with Mr. Souk, he knows a lot about the history of the jars. We toured the 3 most important sites and a small village where they made aluminum objects with the remains of the war. He also helped me buy the minivan tickets to continue my trip.
It really is highly recommended and friendly. I leave his contact in case someone needs to make this same journey.

Hello. When arriving from Luan prabang to phonsavan y the night bus, is it possible to see the site and go back with night bus for vientiane throughout the same day? That also implies finding a place to let the luggage.... Thanks

Hello
Is it possible to travel from Thakhek to Phonasavan
Does this journey go thru the Xaisomboun Province, as this province has been marked as reconsider your need to travel
Has anyone done this trip recently?
Thanks

Yes, you can go from Thakek to Phonsavan, but a tourist bus will most likely go the long way through Vientiane. I'd speak with a local tour company to see where you'd have to switch local buses to go the other eastern route (probably Na Hin - Muang Khoun - Phonsavan). Road is fine and WAY less mountainous than taking the long route from Vientiane - Vang Vieng - then east.

Hi, WE went from L Prabang at about 8am to Plain of Jars and arrived at about 4pm, on a long road journey on very winding roads through the HIghlands. Some places are very scenic along the way. When we arrived that day, we visited the Main Info Centre at Site 1 and spent a good 1+ hour there. Then we stayed overnight in Phounsavan, and you can see my review of the Hotel on Trip Advisor.
The next day, after breakfast, we visited Sites 2 and 3 and spent 2 hours in total there. Then we drove on and finally got to Vang Vieng by late afternoon. Hope this helps.

Hello! We are looking to go to Plain of Jars early next week. We will arrive in LP on the 26, want to travel to Phonsavan on the 27 by bus and then take a day tour on the 28. Is it easy to find a bus to Phonsavan? Is it easy to find tours once you get to Phonsavan? We are only a group of two. What are the prices like?
