Tough sell if you're not interested in this military history. It's also not exactly near tourist hotspots though you might be passing by.

That said, if you ARE interested in pre-WWII and WWII history, this is a must-see. Main event is French-built 1936 bunkers used by Germans to hold back British. As far as bunkers go, these are small, plain, currently empty, and would otherwise be undistinguished. However Germans reinforced this line which proved to be a formidable obstacle. Getting a sense of how this line, and these bunkers, fit into overall terrain is why you stop.

Museum interior is small and undistinguished. An officer takes you around though mine seemed unfamiliar with many of the historical details relevant to site. Weaponry artifacts can all be seen at Tunis National Military Museum.

If you go, it's for the bunkers.

The Mareth Line was a series of fortifications built by the French to protect their protectorate of Tunisia from any Italian invasion from Libya.
During World War II Rommel refortified the Mareth Line during his retreat from Egypt after his defeat at El Alamein. The Mareth Line was eventually outflanked and Rommel had to continue his retreat.
The museum has detailed plans of the battle and some artifacts. The museum guardian will also show you a short film. Outside there are artillery pieces, bunkers and old trenches.
This museum is rarely visited and we had it to ourselves. The museum guardian was a serving soldier and he gave us a personal tour. As he spoke no English I had to get by with my rusty school boy French but fortunately I had done some previous reading. Nearby is the remains of Rommels command bunker but you need your own transport to see it. We were not charged an entrance fee but I gave the soldier a tip, which he seemed pleased to accept.

Ok for adults but not children. Not child friendly what so ever. Boring at times but an average museum
