The Viceroy's Arch, built by Fransico da Gama, the Governor of Goa from 1597 to 1600 in memory of his grandfather Vasco da Gama, and marks the entrance to the old capital of Goa, now called Old Goa. Before Goa was captured by the Portuguese it was under Adil Shah and his palace must have been converted to be Viceroy's Palace. Present day, it is in the vicinity of world famous churches of Se Cathedral, Basilica of Bom jesus and other beautiful churches.
The side of the Arch facing the river has a statue of Vasco da Gama and on the other side is statue of the Argonaut.

You can reach the Arch of the Viceroy either by turning down past the Chapel of St Catherine at the main crossroads and passing around behind the Se Cathedral, or by following the road down past the Church of St. Cajetan. It feels a little quiter in this area of Old Goa, away from the main road, the bulk of the tourists, the taxis, the small market and eating places.
Perhaps because so little of the original waterfront remains the arch seems a little unexpected and is a glimpse into Goa in the time of Portuguese rule. Like most of the structures in Old Goa it is mainly built of laterite blocks though on the river side it has a facing of granite that was presumably intended to impress by its difference. On the way down to the river Mandovi there is a niche at the top of the arch containing a figure holding a bible while on the opposite side facing the river is a small statue ofVasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese navigator/explorer whose grandson had the arch erected. The figure isn't of the finest quality but what it represents and the fact that it is so unusual more than makes up for it. There are original inscriptions on the arch and a nearby information board by the road giving more details. For it's history and setting the arch is worth a detour, even though it was substantially rebuilt in the 1950s. A few metres further on and you come to the landing stage for the ferry over to Divar Island opposite and you can watch the iron ore carriers heading back and forth along the river here in what is, despite this nearby reminder of industry and commerce a very quiet spot. For a few very interesting minutes the arch is worth wandering down to if you have the time, though if your time is limited it might well be more profitable to concentrate on the main attractions in Old Goa especially if you have made your own way there and you are on foot. It's only a few minutes walk from the Se Cathedral but is out of the way.

Few people who visit the Old Goa Churches know of the Viceroy's Arch that lies on the bank of the Mandovi river behind the Se Cathedral. It was erected in 1599 by Viceroy Francisco da Gama (great grand son of Vasco Da Gama) to commemorate the achievements of the discoverer of the sea route to India from Europe. It carries the deer crest of his family. On top of the arch on the side facing the Mandovi river is a small statue of Vasco da Gama, fully attired in his royal uniform. On the back of the arch is a statue of a crowned woman standing on a "native", aptly symbolizing the colonial takeover of Goa.The arch leads to a dock on the Mandovi. For Portuguese officials, this arch was once the main portal for entering Old Goa or Velha Goa as they called it. The original arch collapsed in 1948 and it was restored in 1954.

The road running from the dock through the Viceroy’s Arch and into the city was known as the Rua Direita (so-named for being the only straight, ‘direct’ street in the city), and was lined, in its prime, with shops, a bazaar, a customs house, foundry and other businesses. The waterfront was fully built-upon, with the whitewashed, red-roofed homes of wealthy merchants thronging its shores, all now figments of a long-vanished past.

The old entrance to the inside of the fortress walls back when the Portuguese ruled Goa. Must see while in Old Goa.

Old Goa is best known for its churches and convents from the Portuguese era. However, it also boasts this charming little arch which dates all the way back to the 16th century. The Vasco Da Gama niche on the exterior of the arch is amazingly well-preserved. This is well worth the short walk from Bom Basilica.
