The Cathedral Beach is perfect for picnics and of course swimming in the river. At the end of August the river is still full of water, and when the sun shines outside it is fun to swim here, eventhough the water is cold...

Came to this spot a few times while we were in Yosemite. Took picnic lunch. Valley was hot, river was cool on your feet and the breeze traveled up the river bed. Late summer so not a lot of water. Butterflies, birds, ducks and views that just let the soul relax.

Tucked away from almost everything is this lovely picnic area. Quiet and a great place to cool your toes. I am sure it would be great for small children too.

We first came across cathedral beach on our way into Yosemite valley and stopped for a few hours to paddle and sit in the sunshine.

We also returned on another day using the shuttle bus which stops nearby.

It is a lovely beach area with stunning views all round. We swam in the water with the kids (8&6) but be aware that even on a hot day at the end of July the water was cold and fairly fast moving and there are some submerged tree branches and rocks too.

Cathedral beach appeared to be generally less busy than sentinel beach and as a bonus we also spotted some climbers up on El Capitan.

Bring your own food and drink as, apart from toilets in the car park area, there are no other facilities here.

So we were in search of a relatively safe place to park our selves and just enjoy the waters of Yosemite factoring in the safety of a 5-year old boy. we found it in Cathedral Beach.
The beach is located just off of the Southside Drive, down the Valley... we got there early at around 9 am. we were the 4th car in and they must have about 30 spots inside at the most.. There's minimal tables for picnicking and about a couple of barbeque pits...
we opted to skip the table and laid a beach towel just at the edge of the shaded area... where the course sand begins...
The beach over looks the majestic El Capitan and the Merced river is lazily meandering at eh edge ....
We were there at the in July 23 so factor in the drought too so maybe that is why the river is 'lazy'
there was a lagoon that was created by a fallen tree which made the water a bit warmer than the freezing river...
this same tree created a shallow creek that made it perfect for playing children to wade in safely...
several people would be on their life preservers and would just lazily float down the river... and at the end they would get off and get back at the beginning and float down again... it was fun to watch...
I myself dove in to the river which was about chest deep at the most and it was cold..
it stayed mostly at the edge which was about ankle to knee deep.
it was mixture of soft sand and course sand so I opted to wear my flip flops...
This is where we spent most of the day and I would come here again if given the chance...
I loved it...

We have had several picnics at the Cathedral Beach Picnic Area. its a nice picnic ground with trees and is along the Merced River. Over the 4th of July, it was very busy but people were having fun.

On our way into Yosemite Valley we stopped briefly at Cathedral Beach Picnic Area along the Merced River in the lower part of Yosemite Valley. It turned out that the restroom in that secluded spot was one of the cleanest in the park given that it was a pit toilet. Cathedral beach is a quiet and serene spot on the Merced River in Yosemite Valley. If we had not had other plans, it would have been nice to sit in the shade on the beach and just watch the still waters of the river. My imagination for this nice beach area would be to bring some nice lawn chairs, a cold drink and a sandwich, and just laze by the river. Score 4.
