On our through hike of the JMT, we headed off trail to Sunset Lake for water and to camp. The next day we climbed Clouds Rest. I was not prepared for how incredible this hike was. After 9 days on the trail, we had our legs and climbed past many day hikers to the summit over that knives edge section to one of the best viewpoints on our hike from VVR to Yosemite. Simply a day to treasure as well as a trip of a lifetime.

This hike was a highlight of our trip (June 17, 2021). Took 7:42 total time, with about 45 minutes at the summit. We had 6 people in our group, from 45 years old to 15.
This is the best view of Yosemite we experienced. The summit is about 1500 feet higher than half dome, so you are looking down on that peak. We read that you can see Hawaii from Clouds Rest, and we think we could see an island mountain range far to the west, so we're claiming that we saw Hawaii.
The hike starts off in the forest, and gradually gets more mountainous. Due to how forested Yosemite is, don't expect spectacular views all along the way like you would in Glacier NP.
One particular challenge of this hike is that the ascent is not all up, so the descent is not all down, making it a bit harder than we expected. I normally assume a descent will take half the time of the ascent, but with this hike it was more like 80% of the ascent time.
I was worried about mosquitos, as we were warned about these. They were bad at the beginning of the hike (if you were foolish enough to stop), but about half way through we really didn't see any.

Absolutely crazy wonderful hike! You go through various terrains and underground footing from dirt to rocky boulders to sand. The hardest parts are the rocky boulders about 1.5 miles in where you ascend 1000 ft in 1 mile and then of course the last 3/4 mile to the top. The altitude and distance gets to you requiring you to take smaller steps and rest along the way. The climb up the spine is breathtaking and while scary it isn’t that bad. I climbed straight up the ridge line and took my time but in the way down stayed to the right and it was definitely easier to navigate. Sitting at the top, having lunch and resting, the views are incredible! Going down you still have occasional elevation and the length of the hike can start to get to you so pace yourself and stay hydrated! The rocky
Boulder area was where I took my time and patiently navigated it. We wound up hiking in the perfect day. The previous day had been bitterly cold, windy and even some light hail as told by some hikers who climbed Half Dome. But on our day…perfect! Cold start, 30 degrees, no mosquitos, could navigate water crossings without changing into sandals as I used my poles for balance. Long hike, well worth doing!!

This is the best hike in the park in my opinion. If you can’t do Clouds Rest this is thee hike to do. Took 5 hours to get up and 3 hours down. We stopped a lot to take pictures.

It was a total of 14+ miles. Comparing to Half dome very easy hike. The view from the top is 360 degrees. Which is better than a Half dome.

That was a f$$$ing awesome hike of 12.6 miles in total. Don’t rely too much on the mileage signs along the way. They tend not to be very accurate. My boyfriend and I did all way up for a little less than 3 hours including a couple of pretty quick water stops. It gets kinda hard after mile 1.5 having to go fully up hill for another 1.5 miles. Also another bad part is the mile before you get down at the spine part. The spine itself is not that bad as you could see on the videos. I would freak myself out one night before the hike looking at you tube videos :). Was so ready to abort the mission when the alarm went off later on in the morning, but somehow did it. It is actually not that bad as it looks. It’s pretty wide. The trick is not to look down and take the left side. It won’t take you more than 5 min to get along the spine and reach the very top. Once you’re there it looks amazing. I even had a nice little run for fun. You have a full view of everything around. Half Dome looks so close. All the 3D view you get to see is so rewarding and beautiful.
Spoiler: don’t bring kids up there. 🤪They would be scared and exhausted. At least we didn’t see any kids up there.

From the scenic trails to the view from the top, this is a MUST while in Yosemite! It gets a bit steep towards the top, but well worth the view. Pack a sandwich and plan to stay at the top for a while!

While the trail can feel a bit long on the way back, the view at the summit makes everything worth it.

If you can handle a nerve wracking waltz across the ridge that leads out to the final viewpoint, you will thank yourself! It feels insane, but it’s actually relatively wide and flat. Just keep your eyes trained on the rocks in front of you rather than glancing down the 5000 foot rock face to your right and you should be able to keep the vertigo at bay ;)

Absolutely stunning.

This hike is worth doing because if the views. It's a moderate hike if you start from Little Yosemite camping. The last bit is fun going across a narrow ridge. The panoramic view of snow covered mountains from the summit is impressive. Must do.
