Our first hike in Yosemite was up at Tuolumne area to Lambert Dome. We were by ourselves almost all the way up and then just a few folks at the Dome. What magnificent granite rock and views. Saw deer, but alas, no bears! I wanted to see one, but my wife, well, perhaps not.

As we began our day of crossing the Tioga road in Yosemite National Park, we stopped to hike to the top of Lembert Dome. Lembert Dome is a high granite dome similar to many in Yosemite. At the top it promised great views of Tuolumne Meadows and other surrounding domes and peaks. We started on the trail and it seemed to keep winding and winding. We saw very few people on the trail even though we had seen many people on top of the dome. As we approached the 1 mile mark we came upon a sign that indicated we could have taken a much shorter trail from an upper parking area only ¼ mile away. So, we had walked quite a bit extra. We both climbed the granite rock. The rock was rough and inconsistent of crystal structure which made for great gripping of the shoe soles. The hiking across the steep rock was much easier than I thought it would be. The rock face gets fairly steep the last 20 - 30 yards from the summit but most people continued to the top. Of course, everyone, including me, had to take several photos of the views. The day was beautiful, sunny, cool, but the forest fire smoke pall prevented crystalline views. We back tracked the same trail to our car in the lower parking area. The NPS could improve this hiking experience if there was better signage at the trailhead kiosks by providing better trail map descriptions. Still, in spite of the longer, and quieter, hike that we made, I think this was one of the high lights of our two week vacation. For those reading this, take the Dog Trail from the upper parking lot, it is much shorter. Score 5.

Apart from the wonderful drive along Tioga Road which is worthwhile in itself, Lembert Dome offers a chance to walk up a dome without too strenuous a hike, as you start from high up to begin with.
We didn't go to the top as had other plans that day, but walked a little way just to say we'd done it.
Lots of other great places to visit along the Tioga Road - so give yourself enough time to see them all :)

We camped in Tuolomne for three nights and this was our home dome. A great place for sunset or sunrise, big expanse of rock to rest and hang out on--they even do yoga some mornings. The hike is deceptive--if you are on a tight timeline, use the Dog Lake Trail, which is steeper but shorter than the signed Lembert Dome trail.

This is quite a steep and high hike to do, so keep in mind that the air will be very thin at the top after you've just walked a very steep hill. Take your time. The very top of Lembert dome offers a fantastic panoramic view that stretches for miles!

Lembert Dome ("LD") is a terrific hike that everyone should do at Yosemite. The views from the top are amazing and it's much more accessible than other more popular hikes at Yosemite (namely Half Dome which is a 10 hour hike ).

LD is right off the Tioga Road by the Tuolumne Meadows. There is a good amount of parking right there. LD is a little deceptive because from the road it looks good but nothing out of the ordinary. When you get to the top though, the views are incredible. From parking lot to the top is only about an hour and fifteen minutes at a relaxed pace. The hike is not incredibly steep either.

LD is pretty close to a very pretty lake called "Dog Lake" which is worth a visit, especially since it is so close. Dog Lake is pretty and serene.

LD gets some hikers but on the mid-June day I went it was not crowded at all. I think LD is not well known.

The signs at LD are a little bit confusing. You should go down the way you came up from the parking lot. We followed the signs which took us a different way and ended up bringing us out on Tioga Road a mile or so from the parking lot. It was confusing.

LD was my favorite hike in my 4 days at Yosemite (I also did Clouds Rest, and Vernall Fall). The views on LD were just so amazing.

CAUTION: This hike is entirely above 8000ft elevation, and so it is imperative that you pace yourself on this almost entirely uphill hike. It is so worth it, as the views of the meadows, the Three Mountains (Dana and her brothers), the Cathedral Peaks are viewed no better than atop Lembert Dome.

Hike to the Lembert dome is not really hard. We met some families with children and they made it to the top. From the top of course you can see gorgeous scenic view. Have a lot of water during the summer time.
