This is a really nice section of the Yellowstone River for a brief stopover or even for a longer picnic treat. In late Spring when the salmon flow back to spawn and try to negotiate the rapids, this can be a very exciting experience. Unfortunately, if the Park's bear population also show some eagerness in trying to gobble down some of these spawners, then the area might be closed off. But when it's open, it's a cool place to walk the boardwalk and look at the rapids. The trail actually extends from the boardwalk in both directions; the northern stretch takes you into a more woodsy area toward the overflow parking site. In the other direction you can skirt down to several small pebbly beaches. No fishing in this zone, but just down the road in either direction will be fine again. Find this spot north of Fishing Bridge along the Grand Loop tour. At times, buffalo troupes might be blocking the road. If you have your own fold out picnic table, maybe set it up in the woodlands by the northern parking site.

If you are in a hurry, this is probably not worth a stop. There are more interesting things to see along the same road. The good thing is, that is does not take long to see the rapids.

My favorite thing about this site, was the bison that we encountered before we actually reached the rapids. There was a herd that was crossing over in front of us and we got a first hand, up close look at the beautiful creatures. After several minutes and several pics, we also got to enjoy the beauty of the raging rapids. A must see site for everyone of all ages!!!

This is one of those places that will randomly have wild life around it. You may just see the rapids, but you might also catch a bear grabbing a trout on its way up the river to spawn. Either way, it is a peaceful place with the sounds and view of small rapids. Nice place to stretch your legs and take a few pictures.

This is one of those small areas off the Park Loop Road you can pull off. In this case to see a rapids on the Yellowstone River. It's just South of the Mud Volcano area. There's a small parking lot & a boardwalk trail. We did this on our first trip to Yellowstone, when we pulled off for everything that looked interesting. It's very nice, but we only did it once.
