Black Sand is just north of old faithful and offers up easy parking and hiking. There are 3-4 cool springs to check out.

You get similar colors at Rainbow Pool/Sunset Lake as you do at Grand Prismatic Spring on a smaller scale and without the crowds. This is definitely a stop that you need to make and it is a quick walk to see the sights.

This small basin is less than a mile from Old Faithful. Like the others, it is easily toured from the boardwalk. It is notable for the black lava sand

We so thoroughly enjoyed or exploration of Yellowstone that as it got late in our final day we really didn't want to leave. We had seen Old Faithful erupt multiple times and even got to see Grand Geyser's show. We passed by the sign for Black Sand Basin and turned around to make a stop. It was after 6:00 p.m. and almost nobody was there. It was definitely worth the stop.

Even though Black Sand Basin is part of the Upper Geyser Basin and you CAN walk from Old Faithful, I would recommend driving to the small parking lot. We came on Sunday 9/6 over Labor Day weekend at around 8:15 am and had no issues finding parking. It isn't a very popular spot compared to the other highlights in Yellowstone so there were very few people here. The board walk has a total distance of .5 mile long and it only took us 20 minutes to see everything. Also, I would avoid going there too early in the morning because the steam coming out of the geysers make it hard to actually see the geysers. If you are short on time, I would skip this because you will see much better geysers in Upper Geyser Basin and Midway Geyser Basin. But, if you are like us and spent 4 days in Yellowstone, it is worth a stop!
