- Boutique CVaugneray, France9 contributionsAmazing park. We seen a lot of wild animals in each section of the park. July is a good period as weather is cool temperature ( could have morning freezing temperature early morning at 6 am) . Important to wake up early to enjoy wildlife and have the chance to encounter wild animals. Best national park lodges accommodation at Canyon Lodge & cabins and old faithfull Snow Lodge. We recommend to start you tour from North historic Entrance to have the best lands view and have the benefit of the park magnificent . Mammoth Hot springs are not active anymore. Lake Yellowstone do not offer a lot of trails and discoveries. Hayden Valley and Canyon area are best places to discover. If you go to old faithfull, skip the grand prismatic tourist site as you can not see anything from the regular tourist view point. You can park in another parking at fairy falls and do a short trail to mid geyser basin with a view point in the hill with the best view on grand prismatic.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 6, 2024
- Marcello017Jacksonville, Florida268 contributionsAmazing canyon for the shape of the valley, the colors and the size of waterfalls. It may not be as tall as Grand Canyon, it may not be as colorful as Bryce, it may not have the same quantity of water as the Niagara Falls, but the combination of colors, water and deepness on top of the possibility to descent to the brink of both upper and lower falls, it makes it a unique place. Various trails are around and above the falls. I would not miss the two brinks and some of the other overlook trails. The brinks requires to go up and down few hundreds feet, but it is definitively worth.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 14, 2024
- EdwelshNorth Canton, Ohio7,407 contributionsI was surprised to see that this was the #1 thing to do in Yellowstone National Park. After seeing it, I see why everyone gives it 5 stars, but to rank it over Old Faithful, I think not. The Yellowstone River carved this incredible 1000’ gorge with its steep beautifully colored rock sides. It has not one, but two beautiful waterfalls. Part of the charm is the easy accessible short paths that are right off the parking lots which lead to short walks to perfectly placed viewing platforms. If you just have time to see one side, do the South Rim Drive. Stop at the Upper Falls Viewpoint for a nice view, but the best spot is Artist Point. Here you will find a huge multitiered observation area where each level is better than the last. It got its name from a famous painting by Thomas Moran. Best time to visit is early in the morning for best light, but we were there about noon and it was glorious. We were going to go back in the morning but it was so foggy when we left Canyon Lodge, there was no way we could see anything. Next, a separate stop is the Brink of the Upper Falls. Here you get to see the top of those same falls going over. You get to see and feel the power up close. Then there is the North Rim Drive with Grand View Lookout of the Lower Falls and Inspiration Point.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 13, 2024
- Eduardo FHouston, Texas9 contributionsThe Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is absolutely breathtaking! The dramatic canyon walls, carved by the Yellowstone River, showcase vibrant hues of yellow, red, and orange, making it a visual masterpiece. The stunning waterfalls, especially the iconic Lower Falls, provide unforgettable views from various vantage points like Artist Point and Lookout Point. The mix of natural beauty, geological wonder, and wildlife sightings makes this a must-see destination in Yellowstone National Park.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten January 6, 2025

- USASUNZurich, Switzerland261 contributionsJust tremendously beautiful! We've spent enough time here. First visited all lookouts on the North Rim and the next day the views on the South Rim. At the South Rim we hiked from the Upper Falls to Artist Point and back. This was a very nice and quiet path close to the Rim with many great views. You can also join a ranger talk at Artist Point. It's worth spending more time here. Parking problems we had during our visit no.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 2, 2024
- Cris HPittsburgh, Pennsylvania993 contributionsThe colors! This view took my breath away. I almost didn’t visit thinking I would see the same thing from the south rim but boy am I glad I went. I was there early morning and the sunshine was just hitting the canyon and the colors were so varied and different it was well beyond what I expected. The path is well maintained and accessible for those with mobility issues. I can’t stress enough how much of a must see this is. It was the best thing I saw in my tripVisited October 2024Traveled soloWritten October 21, 2024
- RDH2017Tennessee327 contributionsThis is another experience where pictures don't do it justice. There are several angles with which to view the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. From the overlook at the top, the middle, and the base. I suggest viewing it from all vantage points to get the most out of this awesome location! From the flowing waterfalls to the majestic canyon walls, the scene is absolutely breathtaking!Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 17, 2024
- Susan DHuntington Beach, California1,787 contributionsA must see for every visitor. Most of the viewing is fairly easy and there are several points to view. There is one trail that is fairly steep but very manageable. The views are stunning. Of course in the spring there is so much water flowing it’s magnificent. The exposed yellow rock is stunning.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 23, 2024
- Lee H113 contributionsFrom the Canyon Lodge, follow a small sign between trees to the parking lot, follow another sign, and, wow, it was a breathtaking sight. It was a nice surprise. Returning to the vehicle, I observed the rocky terrain and high and low waterfalls from several viewpoints for half a day. After you feel fear, keep going. If you drive to different locations, you get a lot more. This place is crowded in the summer, but there are not so many places like this.Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 25, 2024

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River is not as humongously large as the famed Grand Canyon in Arizona. Nevertheless it is a magnificent sight! Best viewed early in the morning (say before 10 am) or late in the day (say after 5 pm) to avoid the enormous crowds which are visiting Artist Point or the observation points on the North rim drive. The views from Artist Point are very good indeed.

Yellowstone was beautiful. So much to see and do. We had been told that the weather can change quickly. They were right. It was 50 degrees and sunny one minute and within 20 minutes it was cloudy and rainy. The temperature dropped to 37. It wasn’t very busy. I am glad we went at this time.

I was struck by just how the geology here creates some of the most interesting scenery in Yellowstone NP. From the falls to the hoo doos there is so much color here.
Our experience began on the north side of the canyon where there are fewer visitors. A switchback trail takes one down around 600 feet to catch a view of the falls. You do need to remember though that, at 8000ft in elevation, the climb back up should be done slowly to respect the lower oxygen levels (unless, of course, you're acclimatized to these altitudes).
While the number of visitors on this side of the canyon are fewer I'd still recommend getting here early in the day if for no other reason than to catch the morning light on the water. During our visit the skies were starting to fill up with the haze from the forest fires in Oregon and California which created an almost otherworldly color palette to photograph.

So beautiful! Yellowstone has so much to offer and this spot did not disappoint. We came in the late afternoon around 4pm. It was still beautiful but the afternoon low light did not make for great photos. I would recommend coming here midday when the sun is high so you can see Yellowstone's namesake...the yellow rock walls of the canyon.

In my opinion, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is the most beautiful place in the park. It expresses the park's complex geologic history in dramatic colors and shapes. Puffs of steam mark hydrothermal features in the canyon's walls. The Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River add to the grandeur of the unique natural treasure.
We viewed it from the North and South Rim and from lookout, inspiration and artists points. Unfortunately the brink was closed during our visit but I would have loved to get a workout and get that close to the falls.
We went about 8:30 am to beat the crowds and spent about 2 hours there. Make sure you take a lot of pictures and videos but it does not do it justice when you come home and look at them. Enjoy.

WOW, this was my favorite part of our whole Yellowstone trip. What an amazing sight and experience. We visited a number of stops all around the canyon and each one was better than the last. I highly recommend you plan to spend at least a half day exploring this area of Yellowstone and start early to avoid some crowds. This should definitely be at the top of your list for your Yellowstone trip!

I didn’t realize there was a canyon at Yellowstone, what a view! The steps at Uncle Toms was closed so we decided to hike the Red Rock trail at lookout point and also did the brink of the lower falls trail. I recommend getting here early as it has small amounts of parking and you will want to beat the crowds. The canyon and falls was simply fantastic!

A Grand Canyon in Yellowstone! Visit the waterfalls, as these provide the best views. You will notice the v-shaped edges of the canyon and the unique quality of the stone on the sides. Spectacular! There are several viewing areas, and each are unique for photo ops.

My wife and I arrived just before 8am and found plenty of parking near a trail head marked artist point and took in the spectacular view. We then took the trail to Uncle Tom's point and back. The trail was about 1.75 miles with some moderate inclines. This was one of the definite highlights of our trip to Yellowstone. I am pretty fit for 50 and I felt the hike was enough of a challenge... the payoff of these majestic views were worth every huff and puff.

A must go to while visiting Yellowstone. Make sure to stop at artist point for some amazing photos.
Go early or later in the evening. Becomes very crowded between 10am until 6pm or so.

We just came back from Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park in August. I find July and August are the best time to visit there. I would recommend traveling by car.

Hi!
What are everyone’s top recommendations for geysers and hot springs and pools for the loop road. We’ll have 3 days in Yellowstone during the last week of August (this month). Our base is the Old Faithful Inn.
Also, if anyone knows how the crowds are the last week of August...just curious. We arrive in Yellowstone on 8/25 and leave for Grand Teton NP on 8/28.
Written August 2, 2019
I’m late to answer, but ... spend a day hiking around old faithful. The geysers are mostly unpredictable. Hike to beauty pool. If your traveling to grand prismatic spring, hike to the overlook at ground level it is it impressive.

Hello!
My family and I will be in Yellowstone park at the end of this month. We will have 3 days. Aside from exploring the loop road a bit, I’m looking for some good hikes. Preferably not more than 5 miles and not too steep/strenuous. We are from New York and will be acclimating to the altitude the first couple of days. My 10 year old got a bit of altitude sickness when we hiked up to 8000 feet only one day after we arrived in New Mexico last year. So I’m looking for something well worth it while not having to attend to an ill feeling little boy.
Our base will be Old Faithful Inn.
Thank you!

we wanted to do Uncle Toms trail but it was closed. If you go to Old Faithful, you can walk around a lot to see many geysers. Morning Glory is awesome. As suggested take Angles fall train and see Grand Prismatic from View Point , you can have better view. I write my blog You can have a look. ravi1101.blogspot /2019/07/yellowstone-national-park-grand-teton, All the best Enjoy your Trip. You may add com after blogspot to get there.

We stopped at each view point and did an easy trail as far down as the trail would go. They are all short trails. Nothing like the Grand Canyon and the Angel Trail.

Yes, but only in the Boiling River, just north of Mammoth. It is closed in the spring and early summer due to high water levels. They expect it to reopen some time in mid-July.

Wheelchair accessible only somewhat. There are some smooth short paths to viewpoints. There are some views at some places directly from parking area. We saw families taking people in wheelchairs, and in strollers, on some paths we would not have thought it possible. Most hiking trails are NOT wheelchair accessible.

Does anyone have recent information on what areas at the canyon are currently open or closed?
Written September 12, 2018
The North Rim of the canyon parking was closed for construction. The South Rim, however, must have been recently done and it is awesome.
