We stayed at the Hayden building at Canyon Village in Yellowstone Park. It is the cheapest, cheesiest hotel we have ever stayed in and at some $275/night, highway robbery. Our room does even have a real bathroom, sink is OUT IN THE ROOM, toilet and shower squeezed into a closet 3 feet from the bed. Even the worst budget hotel is far superior. Pretty much no cell phone service and very poor, spotty wifi. Restaurant is crappy fast food, no real restaurant, no service. A real nightmare in every aspect.

This is a tip I would like to pass along to anyone the is going to Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, once you go through entrance and you get the newspaper go directly to a visitors center and sign up for as many ranger Talks, Walks and Hikes as you can fit in your schedule. They are so informative, fun, you will learn about things you didn't read in vacation books. Hurray, to the rangers that work so hard to put these wonderful Talks, Walks and Hikes together, there is something for all ages and fitness. Maria

This complex has everything you would need at Yellowstone. There is the visitor center, general store, grocery store, restaurant, sporting goods store, gift shop and lodging. For Yellowstone, the bathroom at the visitor center is 5 star. When you are at the visitor center, make sure you go upstairs to see the exhibits.

We have been to this area over the last nine years on an annual basis but at different months of the year. In the Spring on first week of June we visited for the purpose to see more of the young animals. If you like animals in their natural habitat Yellowstone Park is well worth the trip. Be prepared with binoculars, picnic food, snack and drinks. Take your time with the sightseeing. It is good to relax here at Canyon Village to pick up lunch or breakfast or get some souvenirs to take home. Summers are warm or a little cool sometimes rainy. The bison are always roaming, block the road at times. Remember, you are a guest in their living room! We saw grizzly bears feeding, wolves at a distance, lots of elk herds or deer. If you stop for the many places for picnics be aware that birds or little chipmunks are common companions. If you have a respiratory condition, remember that this park has a lot of smelly sulfur pots of hot pots in the various pull offs. Canyon Village is a nice place to recoup and perhaps a ranger can help get you some medical assist. The Place here is newly redone and modern conveniences will help you plan your visit.

Distances.
Staying in Canyon Village we had 60 km to Mammoth Hot Springs, and 90 km to Old Faithful geyser. From Mammoth Hot Springs to Old Faithful was a drive of 82 km. So, a round trip to all three places amounts to 232 km.

Old Faithful
was my foremost priority because of the stories I had heard about it. Nevertheless, on our way there we first did see the boiling ponds close to Yellowstone Lake's West Thumb, from where there is 30 km to Old Faithful.
The coloration caused by algae in the ponds is beautiful and weird considering the near boiling temperature. You certainly do NOT get an urge to leave the wooden boardwalks for a closer look!

Old Faithful spews boiling water every 1.30 hours on average. Up to 55 meter in the air. We waited the better part of an hour, before it happened. There is a restaurant with a view to the geyser, so we waited another interval and saw it spew again.
Old Faithful is not the highest geyser, but it is the most reliable one. However, 55 meter is impressive enough.

Round trip.
The next day we took a round trip to Mammoth Hot Springs (an American version of Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) in Turkey), then south to Old Faithful again and home to Canyon Village.
We passed a sign for an obsidian wall of black lava-glass, and tried to find it, but since we were completely alone in the forest at this point, I feared to be confronted by a bear, so we retraced our steps without seeing any obsidian.
On our last leg home, a bison decided to have a dust-bath in a sandy patch – on the other side of the road. All cars stopped, and from the inside of our car we saw in awe how one ton of concentrated muscle-power strolled across the highway leisurely, yet alert, and laid down and rolled himself in the sandy dirt.

Bison data:
A bison weighs 350-1.000 kilogram, and is registered to be able to run at a speed of 60 km per hour. Bison reach an age of about 20 years.
Before Columbus and his successors began interfering in American nature, 100 million bison roamed the plaines of North America. In 1890 only 23 specimen were to be found in the wild (+ 727 in zoos). Luckily the American bison is domesticable and is used in commercial farming, so propagation is manageable. Now the bison population is about 350.000 species.

Drama.
In the late afternoon we drove 3 km from our chalet in the cabin-village to the Lookout Point on the brink of Yellowstone River, from where we could see the big Lower Fall.
As the sunshine disappeared more and more from the high northern cliff of Yellowstone River, a very strong and cold wind arose from the waterfall toward us. Automatically we turned our backs to the wind, but I warned my wife to hold on to her glasses, or preferably facing the wind, as the glasses might otherwise have been torn off by the wind.
A young lady lost her camera leather-case, due to the strong wind. It landed on the steep slope leading down into the swelling river. She wanted to retrieve it, but I advised against it, since the slope was so very steep, and because she would not be able to obtain a secure footing, let alone climb up again, treading in the loose and treacherous broken stones (the size of a child's fist). Luckily she accepted that the casing was lost, and we saw it sliding down further and further – as she herself would have done.

Emotional drama.
On our departure-day we were awakened by some outside noise near our cabin at 4 o'clock in the morning. We looked through the window and saw the side of a huge muscular bison right in front of us, munching grass.
The bison-shoulder resembled the shoulder of my father in his prime on the beach. In fact, it turned out that my father died this same day back in Danmark.

This review is for the Canyon Horse Corral. My family of 4 had an excellent time on the 2 hr trail ride. This is safe for kids as young as 8, the horses are all so nice. It truly is nose-to-tail though so don’t expect to get any runs in. However the pace was faster than any of the other 6 trail rides I have been on and my horse did get to trot a little at one point when we had to catch up. That was fun :) the staff/wranglers are just excellent! All of them were so friendly and helpful (well actually the guy at checkin could use some tips). But on the ride, the wranglers were so funny, engaging, and kept the ride fun. There was someone at the front, back, and one who rode back and forth of the line to make sure everyone was sitting on the horse correctly or help out if a horse tried to stop for a snack. Heads up, they like the kids up front so you might be separated from them. We felt they were safe up there with the lead wrangler though. Also, if you need to use the restroom, they only have the familiar outhouse of Yellowstone and they do weigh everyone at checkin to make sure you are under the 240lb limit.

Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park offers city slickers a welcome respite from nature. There's a strip mall with many amenities, including gift shops, groceries, a museum/visitor's center, an espresso bar and several restaurants. My personal favorite was the Wilcoxson's ice cream - the wildberry flavor was incredible. We also enjoyed burgers and malts served at the counter at the 50's style diner. This was a special treat for our family - the carrot we held out to keep our two children climbing up Mt. Washburn. The peak of Mt. Washburn was a treat itself, but the kids needed motivation to continue their two and a half hour climb.

Drove up from Jackson area to Yellowstone. Stopped in Falls Café in Canyon Village area for lunch & facilities (in same group of buildings with a tiny US Post Office). Nice roasted vegetable flatbreads enjoyed on couches in front of a large see-through fireplace. Substantial serving of ice cream at a fairly reasonable price, given location. Spotless bathroom.

In planning our Yellowstone trip, I was not sure about the accommodation choices but chose Canyon Village a year in advance and crossed my fingers. Having just returned, I will say we made a great choice! This area has been redone and these new lodges and rooms are very nice places to stay in a National Park. You enter at the Washburn Lodge for check-in and they tell you which lodge you are actually in. Washburn Lodge is also where some of the tours pick up their guests. We were in Chittendon Lodge and the rooms were very nice. They have bottles of soap and lotion attached in the shower rather than using all the individual sample sizes. This is an environmentally friendly location. The shower stall is quite small as is the entire bathroom but at least you are not going down the hall or having to share with anyone else. The sink is in the room and not the bathroom. They have a blow dryer available in the room. Our bed and pillows were very comfortable, too. The windows open out, and you have a small fan if needed when hot, and our room had an awesome view of trees and the mountains! There are ice machines and a drink machine on each floor but no room refrig or microwaves. No cooking is allowed in the rooms. There are elevators in the lodges and the rooms open into a hallway. There are dim (probably solar) lights outside and it is pretty dark at night so a flashlight would be a good thing to bring with you. You could walk to the eating area but many people would drive rather than walk on the road. It is basically on the other side of the big patch of trees from the lodging area. There are walkways but they were closed when we were there. We saw an elk twice in the woods across the road. The Canyon Dining Lodge has one large building with several eating choices inside. There is another building there for a general store and some groceries. The visitor center is in this same area. As for the food, I was satisfied with it and the costs here were lower than in other areas of the park. You have an area of oriental type food and a cafeteria type line in one building. The food was the same each of the 3 days we were there — choice of meat (4 options) and the same 2 vegetables each day. Not a lot of variety. But you can eat the cafeteria, then the oriental another meal, or even grab some groceries in the general store. In another building in this area is a grill where you can get burgers, chicken sandwiches, milkshakes — that type food. As for the taste, I was pleasantly surprised. Our trip was wonderful and our stay at Canyon Village was wonderful, too. It is near the center of the figure 8 Grand Loop Road. You can stay here several nights or move from one location lodging to another in the park. We stayed all our nights in one place, drove ourselves some, and took a couple of tours that Xanterra offered that picked us up at Canyon Village. Great choice for lodging!

This was one of the many highlights of our family (12 people) trip to Yellowstone. Even if you have no riding experience the wranglers are expert, careful, and fun...especially Claire and Connor! This was a 1 hour trail ride. After we left the Corral, we did not see another person or even a road, just bison, deer, and elk, and our fellow riders. It's single file with the kids (over 8 yrs) in the front, and grandpa (me) at the rear. Lovely scenery and quiet.
