The Grand Prismatic Spring was gorgeous and the main draw for most of the visitors while the crater was so steamy it was hard to see the awesomeness of its impressive size that was caused by an eruption ages ago. Well worth the visit but be cognizant of its popularity.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 22, 2024

Even though Grand Prismatic is better to see from fairy Falls overlook this is one geyser basin you don’t want to miss.
10a-6p is when it’s most crowded. In fact, I found it to be one of the most busiest parts of the park during my visit. You don’t want to go too early for the Grand otherwise you will just see a lot of steam. I went after 6p with the sun out and above 70 degrees. You get the best colors with no clouds and high heat.

The Painted Pots, Grand Prismatic Spring and Black Sand Basin are all in the area and all are "must-sees". Be sure to stop at them all. You won't be disappointed. Beautiful wooden walkways throughout are comfortable and easy to walk on.

Even on a cold day in September the boardwalks were fairly crowded. This is a relatively quick and very easy walk on the boardwalks. Grand Prismatic Spring is the star, but is best viewed from the overlook on the Fairy Falls trail. My favorite was the Excelsior Geyser.

Fantastic area to stop and see the Grand Prismatic Spring! It’s like you are walking on another planet. You will see the spring from an eye level, which is awesome, but if you want the overlook you need to drive past this spot to the Ferry Falls trail and take the overlook trail to view from above. This is also one of the most popular areas in the park, so arrive early prior to 9am at the latest to get a good parking spot during busy times.

The Midway Geyser Basin has a perfect 1/2 mile trail that allows you to take in the highlight. Opal, Turquoise, and of course Grand Prismatic. Really liked Midway as there are some significant sights to see.

It’s really cool to see. Loads of colors and lots of strange and beautiful sights. Make sure to add it to the list. Go early or late in the day to dodge the crowds or at least during an old faithful eruption.

This is where you will find the Grand Prismatic Spring - a key site to see at Yellowstone National Park. If you are visiting the area, you simply must make time to see this area and walk the land (on authorized, marked paths only). Breathtaking and beautiful.

Are the boardwalks safe with a 5 year old? I see that some parts have no railings!
Written June 14, 2018
Yes they are as we saw many children on the boardwalk. But the’ll require close supervision and an explanation of how dangerous the beautiful place is. Any fall will likely going to be a tragedy within a minute.
