gorgeous and private...

Spent the night here with my daughter a week ago. Lovely beyond words. Approach is not easy, but not too tough either. Just right for a bit of off-the-beaten-path privacy.

I've done this hike twice as an overnight. The hike is a good hour-plus of uphill. About two thirds of it is new forest since the 1988 fires, so you get a variety of terrain (mature lodge pole pine, new lodge pole and a small rocky gorge). The lake is small, pristine and remote. We frightened a group of Elk... More

Not too long or short, this is perfect overnight trail. If you decide to sleep at this place you have to check at ranger station and watch the video about safety in Yellowstone park. This is perfect escape from overcrowded Old Faithful place.Bring your tent, sleeping bag and enjoy 3.5 miles hiking...and yes...don't forget bear spray....

I recently did a 9 day back-country in Yellowstone. Our second night was spent at Mallard Lake. This is one of the most beautiful place i have ever been. I am a well traveled Individual but Mallard lake is one of the most beautiful campsites I have ever stayed at. After a grueling 12 mile trek in past Fairy Falls... More

A good basic hike if you are camping or staying the Old Faithful area and want to get away from the crowds and/or geysers.

If you have more time to spent in Old Faithful area - this is one of the nicest trails you should try to hike. As always when hiking in Yellowstone - bring a LOT of water whit you.

Mallard Lake is a great dayhike (or run) if you are in the Old Faithful geyser basin area. The trail begins south of the main parking lot for Old Faithful Geyser--trail signs are present here also. Bears are present in the area as I evidenced scat and hair while I was running and hiking there frequently when I worked at... More
