- llelling14 contributionsAlways a must stop with the kidsWe have come here for years when traveling through Hot Springs. The kids love the pool and the slides while mom and dad enjoy the hot tubs and sauna. If you are passing through know that you can rent towels if needed and they have a spin machine to get your suit almost completely dry when you leave so they don’t sit in your suitcase getting everything wet. They also have lockers you can use with change.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 10, 2024
- Paul HWest Chester, Ohio3 contributionsPool temp is ok, but definitely not hot.Very affordable way to spend a few hours at a pool. I was enticed by the spring fed pool, but the pool was not hot water by any stretch. It was 87 degrees, which is not cold, but not hot either. On the plus side, they do have a suana, a nice steam room and a couple of hot tubs. Steam rooms are hard to come by and I thoroughly enjoyed detoxing in there. Pool had some nice features including 2 water slides but be advised that this facility was built decades ago, so the walkways and edges are all concrete. Not a big deal, but notable.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 20, 2024
- Steve BDelray Beach, Florida82 contributionsA pleasant experienceThis is a huge indoor pool with water feeding from underground hot springs. They keep the water at around 87 degrees. There are also 2 hot tubs, but I do not know if they reflect the spring water's heat. There are slides for the kids and the young at heart. A pleasant experience. They rent towels.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 23, 2024

After visiting Mt Rushmore we drove 1 hour to Hot Springs first we stopped at Cascade Falls to swim it was a lot of fun! Then had to check out Evans Mineral Springs. It’s a little pricey but my kids had a blast (age 5 and 8) and mom loved the water temp perfect 87 degrees! 😀there is an area for smaller kids and older kids too. Fun water slide for the whole family inside. There is an inside and outside pool which is neat and both have water slides.
I thought it was a neat location and glad we stopped by!

Evans Plunge was a huge surprise in terms of its design, amenities and how the city operates this historic treasure. As a seasonal resident of Rapid City for decades, I had never been to Evans but took grand kids (age 8,12 and 15) for a day to keep them busy. The facility is not on the scale of Bally's health clubs but it is clean, safe and adequate for a day of activities. The slides are older but were nicely designed and well maintained to keep any activity level occupied. The water is warm, void of clorine and bromide smells and crystal clear. There is a sense you are walking into history as you enter. It is attended by all manner of families, summer camp kids and tourists but can accommodate many more folks than were there as we visited. If in the hills and looking for something fun to do which will also entertain curiosity about the Black Hills, this is an absolutely necessary stop which is quite affordable for the family.

Evans Plunge was my all time favorite attraction when I lived in the Black Hills, and always will be when I return. When I read the negative review posted on June 18, 2014, all I can say is they must have been butthurt when they came in. Absolutely nothing in their review is truthful. The bottom of the pool is black because of the river rock on the bottom. FYI river rock is covered with algae. It is dark green not black. It doesn't smell strongly of chlorine, but chlorine is present. You can't have a public pool without it. It is and always has been the cleanest public pool I've ever visited, I have never witnessed any of the things this person posted, so I'd have to call them a liar. They have never claimed to be a HOT spring so that should give anyone reading this a clue. Hot springs are the source, but it is mixed with colder river water, so it is warm not hot. Depending on where you go upstream, it does get hotter in the river in places, but most of those areas are on private land and inaccessible to the public. I miss the old building they had before they tore it down and replaced it with the new one, but that was eons ago.

We visited here as a special dedicated stop on the last day of our family vacation to South Dakota with three boys (15, 11, 6) and very happily spent just over an hour to get the experience and burn some energy. We found the staff and lifeguards extremely friendly. The facility was clean. We went around 9:30am (check their hours in advance for cleaning schedule, Covid adjustments, etc) and there was ample spacing or social distancing (we practically had huge pool to ourselves aside from a senior citizen type gathering in one corner). Boys swam freely around until 10am when rings and slides opened. Then they did those activities for 30-45 minutes. Younger boy (a swimmer) was required to wear a provided-for-free flotation device for only those periods he was on a slide. One mild longer slide and one short very fast slide. Water was crystal clear with no chemicals added (no chlorine since pool is refreshed constantly by spring feed)... could easily see feet on smooth gravel/rock floor of pool. At constant 87 degrees, we all said water was “warm” as we stepped in but boys soon started calling it “cool” and youngest boy actually shivered (that did not deter his swimming). So keep in mind the water is warm but not like bath water. Also the shallow end is slightly warmer than the deeper waters. We had a blast and would return. Note they sell a few snack items, souvenirs, swim suits, etc. Towel rental available. Great experience.

The kids said they had fun but in my opinion it was a YMCA with a water slide. The lifeguards are like nazis, blowing their whistles over every little thing and not nice at all about it. I couldn’t tell if they hated their job or took it very seriously. They should be an SNL skit. Also, they should charge by height not by age. My son was an inch too short for the slide but had to pay the same rate as the kids who were tall enough. If your hotel has a pool, I would skip this.

Visited again on our trip back to the Black Hills and had a blast. It was more crowded than last year and I felt bad because they had limited lifeguards. In fact the outside pool was closed because of lack of lifeguards. Kids had a blast going down the slide and swimming around. The water is luke warm more life a cooler bath water. Still enjoyable though. We enjoyed the hot tub, steam room and sauna. Spent about 2 hours there.

A must for any family visiting the Custer State Park area. Took the family there for an evening session swim and the kids said it was the best part of the trip. The springs pool is large and has tons of things for all ages to do including slides, rings, and an outdoor pool as well. Water temperature was perfect, the service and life guards were great, and the locker rooms were very family friendly.

Evan’s Plunge is a neat destination…when they’re open. We travelled 6 hours on spring break to go and they’re closed for maintenance. They apparently posted this info on Facebook like march 2nd but didn’t think to change their hours on their voicemail or their website or google or literally anywhere else people look for something like that.

Hubby and I brought the grandchildren (ages 6-14) up to Hot Springs for a few days for their Christmas present. Went to Mount Rushmore in the morning, lunch in Custer, then Evans Plunge in the afternoon. Pleasant day for all! Don't miss this attraction while in the area!

Do you have any hot tubs/spas that are chlorine/bromine free? Is there a noticeable chlorine smell in the air throughout the facility? My husband is very sensitive to chlorine and we are trying to decide if a visit would be worthwhile for us.
Written August 13, 2018
We were told the outside pool has chlorine. Call them to make sure.
