We always take the ferry when arrive at Cincinnati airport and drive to west side of the city. This amazing old-style way of travel is so relaxing! And it doesn't take any longer than the Interstate if you happen to find the ferry waiting for you! The longest one needs to wait for a ferry is 15 minutes, but even then enjoy the moving barges.

If you get the chance it is a must do in Cincinnati. If traffic is backed up to the airport this a great shortcut. Took the grandkids for ferry ride. They loved it to no end. The staff is very friendly. The kids were walking around on the boat, watching things in awe. And not bad for this old Grandpa too. Web site http://www.andersonferry.org

We didn't get here on purpose, we were just looking around. Out GPS was set to not use Highways as we have found this is the best way to explore areas that we have never been. We were in North Kentucky, near the Cincinnati Airport (which is also in Kentucky), and we spotted the Anderson Ferry. Neither of us had ever been in Ohio, and we decided right away to take the Ferry. We had no idea of cost, we simply wanted to do this.
$5 got us and the car across the Ohio River to Ohio. It was a very nice, smooth ride while we relaxed in the car watching the river, the birds, and the scenery. It was great and we really enjoyed the trip.
I highly recommend it.

Anderson Ferry was established in 1817. Almost 200 years ago. They short trip across the river is about 15 min. long. The price is $5.00 for your car and all within it. It's a peaceful gentle ride across the river on a nice day in May. You can get out of your car to take better photos. Other folks riding across with us in their car said they've done this Many times. No big deal to them, but to us, it was a great experience with a feeling of reaching back into the history of this area....

This is a fun way to cross the river and enjoy a Sunday drive. You can cross over into Boone County Ky, and have lunch, then catch the ferry back to Ohio.

We wanted to use the ferry to let the kids see how things are done when bridges couldn't be used. It is really quick, the employees are very nice and keep things moving as quick as possible. Cost to us, being a car was 5.00, so who wouldn't do something new for just 5.00. Great Website, with history if you need to look up the schedule. If you are crossing the river either KY To OH, or OH to KY I would take the ferry at least Once!

I was shocked when I found that no one has ever reviewed one of the icons of Cincinnati, the Anderson Ferry, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located on the west side of Cincinnati, it transports cars, small trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians from the Cincinnati neighborhood of Riverside to Constance, Kentucky, a village in Boone County. Much of the traffic uses the ferry as a shortcut from western Cincinnati to the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Ky. Inter. Airport, however, with the expansion of Boone County into a major commercial and business area many people are using the ferry to get to work without using downtown bridges.
The original ferry began in the early 1800's and was horse-driven. It was replaced by a steam-driven ferry not long after. The oldest boat still in use is the Boone 7, built in the late 30's, a side wheel paddlewheeler run by modern engines and only used if desparately needed. Two modern diesel towboats push the barges for most of the ferrying operations, usually just one boat at a time, although during special events or peak periods the second boat will be put into operation. Average time involved is about 15 minutes, maybe 20 during peak periods, but you won't wait long.
Cost to cross for a car was $5 last I crossed with light trucks or cars with trailers being more and smaller vehicles and pedestrians less.
So, if you need to get the newborn to sleep, need five minutes to clear your mind and relax, or want to do something different that's cheap, head down River Road and ride the ferry over to Ky. - the hum and gentle undulations of the ride will be good for your soul.

The Anderson Ferry is the easiest way for many in the Western Hills of Cincinnati to get to and from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport; especially for those in Price Hill, Delhi, Covedale, Westwood and Cheviot. I always enjoy the downhill drives to the Ferry on either side of the Ohio River: Anderson Ferry Road in Ohio and State Routes 20 and 8 on the Kentucky side; beautifully forested on both sides, steep and winding. The Ferry ride itself is always a pleasant experience in fair weather - great views up and down the River, and up close and personal encounters with barges and other river traffic. It's quicker than going East or West to the bridges. Fairly inexpensive. I used the Ferry my last trip to Cincinnati in Aug 2015.

There is parking on both sides if you want to just walk or bike. Foot passengers cost .50/1.00 round trip. Bicycles cost $1/ $2 round trip, Motorcycles $2, Cars $5 one way. The ferry goes back and forth continuously which takes about 15 minutes, so it isn't a long wait. If you are biking, it is best that you get on after the cars load up so they don't squeeze you. Also there is a fairly steep hill getting off on either side, so getting off last is best. On the Kentucky side, turn right (West) and ride (or drive) 10 miles to the turnaround point on SR 8. Lots of things to see along the way - McGlasson Farms Roadside Market, Giles Conrad Park, Freedom Grove, River Pointe Stables, Quilt Barns. Best rolling hills near the end before the turnaround point.

What is there to do once you cross and is it in walking distance?
Written June 7, 2021
where is this actually located? when i save it on TA, it's way north of the border + the river...thanks!

Hi, the ferry is reached easily by taking Rt 50 west all along the Ohio River about 10 miles from Cincinnati. Anderson Ferry Rd is sort of perpendicular to Rt 50, & just a locator for this. You can almost see the ferry access on the river. Turn left, go over the tracks & you are there. When you arrive on the Kentucky side, you will need to turn right/west coming off the ferry on Rt 8, & then left on Rt 20 & up to I-275 for a major highway.

How wide is the Ohio River at Anderson Ferry?
Written December 27, 2017
It is at least half a mile wide. Has a good current. The ferry has been operating for about a century and half and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Currently how much wait time should I expect on a Saturday morning Northbound?
Written September 8, 2017
We have never waited more than 15 minutes for any trip across either way even at morning rush or quitting time. They have 2 ferries so it looks backed up they add the 2nd one.
Written September 21, 2017
Less than 10 bucks...Not sure of the exact amount...Probably closer to 5 bucks

Where does this land on the kentucky side and any nearby attractions there? We would be on foot. Ty!
Written February 10, 2015
Rt 8 in KY is a popular motorcycle and bicycle road to ride.... Going West to its termination, and then back again. The apple orchard/farm is the ONLY attraction with limited hours, but again a real blast with the kids in the fall around Halloween pumpkin picking time.! Lifetime photographic moments with your young ones.
