Enjoyed meeting Gus while my husband searched for a loved hat. Then he took the time to let us video him for our YouTube channel as he talked about his life in Greece and living in the US. It's nice to have an incredible storefront business while having an amazing product. My husband walked away with a nice hat and was very happy!

The staff was a true delight. Gus took time to tell us the history of Batsakes. The selection was excellent. No pressure but wonderful assistance to find the very hat for me. If you're in Cincinnati it's a must stop.

The 105 year old, Batsakes Hat Shop is located in the the central Cincinnati downtown fountain square retail area at the corner of 6th and Vine Streets. This corner street level store front, with ceiling to floor windows on all sides, gives 78 year old Gus Miller the owner, a front window view of the comings and goings of downtown fountain square.

Mr. Miller can be seen cleaning. steaming, shaping, sizing, fitting and making hats of all types through the windows along the Vine street side, using the same tools of his trade from a bygone time (over 41 Years at Basakes Hat Shop), which could now be museum pieces. In addition to custom making hats, (hats made by Gus Miller start about $175), he sells many ready made top line retail brands, (Stetson, Kangol, Borsalino, Dobbs, just to name a few).

As a side function of this shop, you can get one hellofa shoe shine. In their old location the had a cadre of male shoe shine personnel, taking turns utilizing about seven chairs on a walk-up basis. Today, this number is about two, for two chairs. You can get a shine either on or off the foot, that is you can leave your shoes for pick up later.

The store, has always been in the Cincinnati downtown retail district, but only recently moved to this location, when the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center purchased and built on its previous location.

An article in the Cincinnat Enquirer stated "... thanks to old-world craftmanship, word-of-mouth and a loyal, hat wearing clientele, the store has survived."

Among, the celebrities that have shoped or received hats from the Batsakes Hat Shop, are: Frank Sinatra, Snoop Dog, Bob Dylan, both presidents George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, Tony Bennett, Red Skelton, Luciano Pavarotti, Bill CosbyTom Browning, Vida Blue, Deion Sanders, Pete Rose, Roger Clemens, Cal Ripken Jr. And President Ronald Reagan. To this day the list keeps growing, because of the character of the shop, the service, and the pleasant sincere friendliness of the Greek proprietor, Gus Miller.

Most hat shops I have been to, and I have been to a lot of them, are helpful and friendly and know their product, NOT this one. The elderly blond lady that tried to help me needs to retire. She was rude, and did not know her brands or how to fit a hat properly. Very disenchanted with this Cincinnati at shop.

First time I have been in a hat shop the that I have not bought a hat. I think ever.

As I noticed from most of the pictures on the wall, this must’ve been a very nice hat shop 30 years ago. Not anymore. It obviously is still running off its reputation from decades past.

Don’t waste your time.

Let's be blunt - ballcaps are a way to cover your head, but they aren't hats in the true meaning of the word. Batsakes' sells HATS, in all styles, sizes and colors, no matter what kind of "look" you want to project. The staff is patient and they know their stuff, so you are guaranteed to walk out of there happy. My wife got a Tilly's hat there one day and liked it so much, we were back there the next morning at opening and I walked out with a Tilly on my head.

Yes, these are more expensive than ballcaps, but ... they are really, truly, hats, and worth every penny.

Stuffy and over priced. Overall, they have interesting hats. Again, way overpriced. Go to the hat store on Ludlow Avenue in Clifton, they have great hats, 75% cheaper but the same quality.

At the recommendation of an employee of the hotel I was staying at in Cincinnati, I decided to stop in to Batsakes. I was interested in a tweed cap, and didn't want to try to buy over the internet as sizing can vary from brand to brand. I was greeted very quickly and asked if I needed help. I told the lady what I was looking for and she showed me the different selections that they had available. After trying a couple on, I found the one I wanted. I struck up a conversation with Gus Miller and found him to be a very warm and likable gentleman. The next time I am in Cincinnati, I will stop in to Batsakes again.

This store is a true icon. While they do carry a number of brands, for me, you go to get a Batsakes hat custom made by Gus Miller. Gus has been making hats there for 67 years, and he'll make whatever hat you want. He's made them for Luciano Pavarotti and George Herbert Walker Bush among many other famous people (there are photos in the store).

I bought a Gus Miller custom, and it is truly beautiful. Expensive? Hell ya! But it's an iconic downtown store and one of the very few places you can get a true one-of-a kind.

Certainly worth a visit!

a one of a kind experience from one of Cincinnati's most interesting citizens! Gus Miller has made hats for Presidents, Senators, Movie Stars, sports stars, Pavarotti! and thousands more!! He is Cincinnati's "fabricant de chapeaux"!!!!!
Let Gus make any style of hat and you will have a treasure for always! And he's Cincinnati's preeminent philosopher as well!
