Our group of 4 love escape rooms and do them in just about every city we visit. We chose to try Breakout Waikiki’s Patient 57 room during our family vacation.
The experience was fun overall, but seemed poorly designed. It felt like the room creator accidentally bulk ordered four digit padlocks and had to come up with puzzles for them all. This meant that, despite there being a lot of cool and creative puzzles, they all took a similar form and were easy to mix up with another. This thing has numbers, and so does this thing, oh and this thing…. And now we have a four digit code, yay!! Try it on all 5 available locks real quick to see what that random puzzle was for in the first place.
There were also several puzzles that had pieces locked behind multiple other puzzles, but the pieces had no indication that you were still missing elements. This meant it was easy to burn time trying to solve a puzzle you weren’t ready for because it seemed you had everything.
Another issue we faced were some general maintenance issues. At a couple points my team successfully solved a puzzle but thought we must had made a mistake simple because the new unlock did not open properly or lacked any indication that something had changed.
Our guide was fairly apathetic and was very quick to give unprompted clues. I feel this is indicative that they have seen many people run headfirst into these design issues and aren’t sure what to do about them. I hope management can step in to make improvements. Some really simple things would go a long way to make this a top notch escape experience. Unique puzzle solutions (not just 4 digit codes), indicators like colored lights for when elements change, and ensuring it is obvious when elements are missing and/or do not belong together. With these changes I think everyone would have a much better time together.

Got scheduled for the wrong date, but luckily they still had the room we signed up for open at the time we wanted. We did the Y2K. Online it says it’s 7/10 and there is ones that are harder, but when we asked at the location they said it was the hardest room and it was very challenging, especially for two people. We failed, (we have only failed one other time and we have done lots of rooms), but we were close though. The theme was awesome. I just wanted to dance to the music and it brought back memories to my husband and I since we were teens during the actual Y2K. Youngsters won’t understand the room like the older generations.

I’m claustrophobic. I wasn’t sure I would be able to deal with this type of “fun.” But, my family wanted to do it. So, I went along. I explained to the manager my concerns. He was gracious and explained how the door locking system worked. When my panic overtook me just before he locked us in the room, I went out to sit in the lobby. The manager came out to check on me and offered that I could join my family at any time that I felt ready. After a few minutes, I calmed down and did rejoin my family. It was wonderful! Thank you for your kindness and caring. It made a world of difference.

My colleagues and I visit Breakout Waikiki every December as part of our office Christmas celebrations. We love coming here because the rooms are top-notch, high-quality, and we always have a great time puzzling over the clues and riddles. The staff are amazingly cheerful and helpful, and they make sure that we always have a great time. There are several other escape room venues on the island, and Breakout Waikiki is my favorite. Try it, you'll love it!

Visited with my wife and adult kids. Had a great time. Our "guide" Alex did a fantastic job providing a few colorful, and needed, clues. We've done a few escape rooms in the past, and we liked this one the best. Challenging, but not too difficult.

My husband and I plan a yearly trip with our teenage grandkids and we always include a local escape room. It’s a fun activity for all of us and we always look forward to it. Breakout Waikiki was the best experience so far. I REALLY appreciate that the guides help you and root for you to win. We ended up coming back and doing 3 different rooms. The rooms are all very challenging, but not overwhelming. And, the rooms are private so we didn’t have to worry about strangers joining us. It made for a truly memorable experience!

I've been to different escape room places, and this was probably the best escape room that I have ever been to. It had lot's of original problems to solve and really stuck to a story line. We will do it again next time we are in Waikiki!

The breakout room was so much fun, it was the perfect amount of difficulty to playing. The guy who checked us in gave very clear directions and was so excited for us to participate. We had such a fun time together figuring out all the puzzles and we escaped with 1 second to spare, we will definitely be going again soon.

Patient 57 was a great room to do. Had a good time and it makes you think all the way through. A group of friends will find it very exciting. Also good for couples and team building

Just the two of us trying to find something to do in the midst of the pandemic. I had been to only one other escape room prior to this and it was the first time for the person I went with. The puzzles were challenging yet fun. Environment was clean and rooms were set so that no random parties were able to join your group. Prices are also reasonable. I see myself coming back to try a more challenging room.

Aloha Betty,
The rules are simple, you have 60 minutes to solve the puzzles, unlock clues, and put it all together to breakout in time! It’s hard to say anything more without giving away some of the fun, but the overall guidelines are as follows:
-everything you need is in the room
-you won’t need to pick locks or break anything open
-your phone won’t be necessary to solve the puzzles
-you will need to work together with your team if you want to breakout
-if you get stuck, you’ll have three free clues that you can use at anytime
Our Staff will always keep an eye on you so we can help out! If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to call us at 808-926-1418. Mahalo!
