The Hike was amazing, getting your car broken into... not so much
Nov 2020
The hike was amazing, I loved all the obstacles that led to the final waterfall. It made the effort worthwhile.

After getting back to where we parked however, we found out along with 3 other people that our car got broken into. What made it worse was that the Cop who came along to write a report mentioned that this HAPPENS OFTEN! Apparently the Park owners don't want to put cameras or a sign because it would "deter tourists".

Again, Hike, amazing would recommend.... but also understand you also run the risk of getting your car broken into because the park operators would rather keep you in the dark about it.

Obstacle course hike with gorgeous waterfall
Feb 2020 • Family
Not an easy hike through mud, river, and and a bamboo forest but the waterfall at the end is gorgeous! Our kids loved the adventure! It took about 1 1/2 hrs there and back and we would definitely do it again.

Difficult trail
Jan 2020 • Couples
We went to this waterfall off of Hwy 61. It is not easy to find or get to it. You have to be ready to take an adventure, use orienteering skills and canyoning. There are 10 ways up and down, each one different.

Beautiful the whole way!

The peaceful walk through the bamboo rainforest and the waterfall itself was spectacular. The hike to the waterfall was extremely muddy after it had just rained, so make sure to bring good shoes. Luckily I went with people who had done the track before or I would have gotten lost, there defiantly needs to be more signage.

Well worth the hike

Really beautiful waterfall that's a bit off the beaten track.
You have to climb through the fence at the start of the trail which isn't clearly marked.
There are different difficulties marked by different ribbons, blue seemed to be the most direct route which I followed on the way back.
The pink/Orange led up some hills and was longer + more challenging.
It is about a 40 min hike which would get muddy and slippery so wear decent shoes.
People took their kids and all seemed ok but not sure I'd recommend it.
With Pali hwy closed you just have to go around the 'local traffic only' sign and you can get to the gate.

Never Again
Aug 2019 • Family
we saw very good reviews for this hike but our experience was terrible, the first 20 minutes was great until we were winding around following the blue, pink, orange, and red ribbons. They were all so far away from each other in places and some were so hard to find. we were an hour and a half in when we decided to head back because we couldn’t find any more ribbons. we couldn’t find our way back thanks to the lack of ribbons and multiple trails, and we kept going in circles. after falling, tripping, can having panic attacks we finally decided calling 911 was the best option. they told us what direction to go and we found more hikers and finally got out after 4 hours. Would not recommend!!

A true adventure!
Jul 2019
Warning: this is not a tourist spot, it is a bit off the beaten path. But ask anyone in my family, it is our favorite thing we did on our visit to Hawaii. You feel as though you are walking through a rainforest. We even got rained on a couple of times, but the rain didn't last long. Parking is on the side of the road near the trailhead. To enter the trail, you first have to climb over a fallen tree to get around a chained barb wire-gate (don't worry, and police officer was standing outside the gate doing construction on the road when we went and he said it is perfectly legal to hike there). Then you walk through a bamboo forest before climbing the mountain. You have to cross over the creek a few times using the rocks in the water, and at the very end you have to climb up some pretty steep areas with either roots or boulders you use to climb. Right before you get to the waterfall there is a rope tied to a branch that people use to get up and down the hill. I was a little worried at times that not all in our party would make it without getting hurt. A 20, 23, 55, and 59-year-old went on this hike in my group. We learned that Hawaiians have a much different definition of a "moderate/intermediate" hike than we do on the East coast of the USA. We almost turned back at the end because of that last hill, but man are we glad we did not turn back. The waterfall is stunning, probably about 300 ft high. There is a pool at the bottom of the waterfall that you can wade around in (not really deep enough to swim). There was one other group of three kids at the falls when we got up there, and as we were leaving there was one group hiking up, so it is not very crowded like the popular Manoa and Waimea waterfalls. It was a truly wonderful experience.
A true adventure awaits you at this waterfall. I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the real Hawaii.

worth it but hard

amazing hike. you have to climb over the fence in the beginning and make sure to follow the ribbons. it’s a 40 min hike and i recommend going in a big group as it can be dangerous. you should not go with older ppl or rlly young kids, and should go during dry times as it is less muddy. you can go swimming in the waterfall, spend a while there. but it’s worth it, 100% recommend.

Great hike

Lots of climbing and pretty views! Avoid bamboo portion at the start to avoid mosquitos, go under the fence instead! Waterfall at the end is so worth it! Intermediate and take your time as it could get slippery

Lulumahu Falls

This was an easy hike I'd say. It can get hard when crossing ponds of water towards the end, but just stick with following the pink ribbons. Make sure to wear closed toed shoes, it can get muddy and is very slippery. When you enter and drive through a long road, park on the sides and walk to the gate. You cannot swim at the falls, but you can stand under it. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was not crowded.
