Captain Mike is a wonderful instructor. We chartered his boat with him as captain on the leeward side of Oahu on a 3-4 day sail in December of 2019. He also gave me the ASA 105 test which I passed. I would highly recommend him. We anchored and swam every day and came into marinas to casually dine. Seeing the coast of Oahu from even 5 miles offshore allows you to imagine what the island looked like to seagoing voyagers hundreds and thousands of years ago. The fees were very reasonable. We hope to return for further sailing.

We had an absolutely fabulous time on our sailing adventure! Capitan Perry and First-mate Ty were wonderful! They tailored our trip time to what worked for us based on the weather, conditions, and our 6 yr old! We saw turtles while snorkeling, whales and dolphins while out at sea (although I’m told that it’s rare to get all 3 in one trip!!) but honestly being on the water on the boat all to ourselves was just lovely and relaxing. (A needed break from the crowds of tourists at Waikiki!!) The weather and sea life obviously made it more even more special but the boat, crew and experience were right up our alley. We went in at 8am in the morning when the water was calm - so we really couldn’t “sail” but we didn’t mind just motoring - we got out pretty far even with the snorkeling excursion. It is was the highlight of our trip!

Captain Mike & Michele were outstanding nautical hosts for our family outing. The booking and cruise around Waikiki were very professional and personalized to suit our family. We booked a four tour with Captain Mike. We are able to see whales, dolphins and enjoyed a beautiful sunset to cap off our boating adventure! This team made a great outing into a magical memory that our family will always cherish! Thanks again Captain Mike & Michele you are best sailing company in Oahu!

I am not commenting on crewed trip, which I am sure is satisfactory. I rented a sailboat from this establishment to crew on my own. By far, it was the dirtiest boat i have ever rented. It wasn't trashed, per se, but it wasn't cleaned very well either. The orientation was disorganized. considering the price, I would not rent from them again.

Rather than tell you, here is the email that I sent Mike: Hi Kim and Mike --

Kim has asked me to provide a list of issues with our cruise -- This is my list, if our guests have anything to add to it, I will supplement -

1. No one picked us up from the airport although we had been assured that we would have transportation. This was due to the fact that the boat was not ready and everyone was scurrying at the last minute to get groceries. Rather, one of my guests' was given Kims car and told to come pick us up. She got lost and what should have been an easy 45 minute process turned into two hours.

2. Once we got to the boat, the boat was docked in such a way that we had to jump from the dock onto the bow of the boat - keep in mind, we had been traveling more than 10 hours, were exhausted, in travelling clothes with luggage. Additionally, myself and my guests are all older women in our 50's and 60's. In the past thirty years of chartering/sailing -- I have never had to jump onto the bow of a boat.

3. Once onboard, the boat was noticably dirty and in disrepair - beginning with my cabin -- The sheets had not been changed and there were small black bugs in my bed. There was no door on the closet in my cabin, and the closet was stuffed to capacity with what looked like garbage. Nevertheless, there was no place to stow any clothing.

4. Knobs were missing in the galley, making it impossible to open some drawers/cabinets. This was a bit frustrating when I got up before everyone and wanted to make coffee, yet couldn't open kitchen cabinets.

5. The Galley/Dining area was cluttered, there was no TV in the galley, so movies and wine at night were out of the question

6. Although I had sent several emails -- to both of you, explaining that my sister had never sailed, and I was looking for private, shallow, quiet snorkeling areas -- there was no cruising plan.

7. The boat didn't have enough fuel for the cruise -- Kim explained to me there was no where to get fuel.

8. One of the harbors Kim pulled into one night seemed dangerous. Kim even noted that we should eat at a restaurant where she could watch the boat due to the shady characters that were hanging around. Not once on this cruise did I see Kim check in with a dockmaster or pay any docking or mooring fees.

9. Although amusing, it was completely inappropriate for our captain to suggest that we "all take our shirts off" when navy helicopters were flying overhead.

10. We never ONCE ate a meal off of dishes, everything was served on paper plates. Little if any thought was put into a meal plan, and it was apparent that the document that I filled out for provisions and provided months before the cruise had not been read. This was why I actually took everyone, including Kim and Val out for 2 of the meals.

11. The air conditioner was not run until the last day when I was packing, and I finally insisted with Kim to turn on the AC so we could pack below. Again, with older women on the cruise, it would have been nice had the cabins remained air conditioned and comfortable.

12. In my sisters cabin, shelves were falling off of the wall

Bottom line, although I am a fan of Kim's captain abilities -- this was NOT a $5,600.00 cruise. At this junction, and in an effort to end this immediately and amicably -- I need a refund of half of this charter or $2,800.00

If this is not acceptable, or if I do not get a response, I will seek other remedies --

I hope we can work this out --"

In light of the horrible experience on board, Mike offered to refund half of my money. When it didn't arrive, he lied to me and told me he didn't have my address. I then sent him my address AGAIN, and a week later he told me he wasn't going to refund me. This organization is a joke -- and a dangerous one. The idiot he had as our "Captain" didn't have a captains license -- there was no safety check, none of us knew where life preservers were (if we did need them) -- I am speaking to lawyers in Hawaii -- Anyone else that has been ripped off by this company, feel free to contact me -- Let's see if we can put this scam artist out of business --

This was my first sail of the deep blue seas in Hawaii and I thoroughly enjoyed it with my fiancé Aaron.
Almost 4 hours sailing from Kewalo Basin Harbour was an absolute dream.
Captain Paul was entertaining and very obliging.
We both can't wait to return and do a sail that lasts at least a few days.
Thank you Paul for a wonderful trip, I only wish it was longer! And this coming from a land loving Aussie gal! Linda (Sydney, Australia)

Honolulu Sailing Company was a great option for sailing lessons. Captain Rick made us feel very comfortable sailing the boat.
Good option for ASA 101 certifications

We had Michele and Mike for a four hour sunset sail. We had our family ranging in age from six to 73 and everyone had a lovely time. Michele was a huge source of energy - so enthusiastic. We had a fun sail with some dolphins that came to swim alongside, and a chance to anchor and swim in Turtle Canyon. We brought our own food to cook on the propane grill and our drinks. We topped the afternoon off with a peaceful cruise back to the harbor into the sunset. This isn’t a big operation but that’s the charm of a beautiful boat (Tefiti - 50’) with a friendly crew, where you’re buying a great, relaxing sailing charter.

My fiancé and I thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day sail with Capt Mike. We passed three ASA courses between the two of us; 101, 103 and 104. Mike is thoughtful, clear in his explanations and has deep knowledge. We enjoyed our time with him. We loved seeing the island from the sea and honing our skills in windy and choppy conditions.

As others have eloquently stated Captain Mike is an island ocean sailing expert. I’ve not much to add, except for me, getting around on the deck, and winching the halyard and jib lines was pretty taxing so it’ll get you in shape. We anchored and swam off Poko’i and other great spots near Waianae. Don’t expect gourmet cuisine but wholesome sandwiches, fruits and perc coffee. Mike doesn’t spend a lot of time explaining or talking though.

I hope to take and pass the ASA 105 test tomorrow - I didn’t realize how much self-study was involved so am only up to Chapter 7. Tursi’s solutions hav some errors but overall excellent.
