I recently traveled to Honolulu with my 82 year old mother so she could visit the island of her youth. My mom grew up attending this church, and she married my father there. When my mother was only 8 years old, she and her family were leaving this church when they saw planes over Pearl Harbor. It was December 7, 1941.
On our visit, parishioners handed out shell necklaces to visitors, and there were plenty of friendly people who remained to chat with after the mass. The beautiful building and inspirational service were very much worth the time, even if I had not had a special connection to this place.

This beautiful historic cathedral (dedicated in 1843 and the oldest Catholic church in the United States) was built with limestone carried up the few blocks from the wharf in downtown Honolulu. It Is the site of the ordination of Father Damien of Molokai (canonized a Saint in 2009). As you enter through the original wooden doors you can almost feel what it must have been like in 1827 when the mission was first established (the first in the Hawaiian Islands). It is such a peaceful oasis amid the hustle and bustle of the Honolulu business and financial district. A must-see for all.

If you are Catholic and here on a Sunday, this is a beautiful Cathedral with much history. We went to 1030 Mass and had an usher tell us about some of its history afterwards.

Built on land given to the Roman Catholic missionaries by King Kamehameha III, this beautiful cathedral is purported to be the oldest cathedral in the USA. It is a lovely sanctuary to go to and admire.

Our ship was berthed at Pier 2 Cruise Terminal and walked northwest on Nimitz
Hwy (92) to Bishop St and then north on Fort St to the Cathedral of Our Lady of
Peace. Church dates back to 1864 and was very beautiful.

It was a wonderful experience being inside the oldest cathedral in the US that is still in use. Its beautiful inside and out. They offer free parking and have a small gift shop. It is right in Chinatown so its easy to walk from there and grab lunch and see other things when you are finished.

This is the oldest continuous running cathedral in the USA. Key words continuous as a couple of older ones were closed for a short time.
The cathedral was built over a three years period and completed in 1943. It's most widely known for having the body of and relic of one saint and a relic of another.
Blessed Damien de Veuster is the most the first Saint affiliated with the cathedral and Saint Marianne who followed Saint Damien.
Blessed Damien was ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 1864 in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace two months after his arrival in Hawai‘i.
He was assigned to the Big Island where powerful bonds of Christian love developed between him and his people.
In the meantime, the Hawaiian population was being plagued by Hansen's Disease or leprosy as it was known at that time. Those infected were sent to Kalaupapa Settlement on Molokai to remain forever. Blessed Damien requested to serve in Kalawao where the most desperate patients were housed. He arrived in Kalaupapa on May 10, 1873 and eight days later he wrote to his provincial asking for permission to stay permanently. His superior answered him by saying that he had not made up his mind concerning this matter but "...You may stay as long as your devotion dictates..."
They were the most welcome words that he could have received and he read the letter repeatedly allowing the words to echo in his mind and in his heart. He longed to serve among these most pitiful souls, the residents of Kalawao. It turned out to be a monumental challenge with the possibility that he might someday contract leprosy, for in order to communicate his love and concern it would involve direct contact with them.
Blessed Damien's work among the patients knew no bounds and his primary concern was to restore to them a sense of personal dignity and value. He ministered to the sick by bringing the sacraments to them and by anointing those who were bedridden. He washed their bodies, bandaged their wounds, tidied their rooms and made them as comfortable as possible. He encouraged those who were well to work alongside him by building cottages, coffins, a rectory, an orphanage for the children and repairing the road. He also taught them to farm, play musical instruments, and sing.
He touched their hearts with his sincere desire to serve them and slowly their sense of dignity which was all but destroyed by their illness was restored.
Even before he was diagnosed with leprosy he used the term "we lepers" in his sermons for he wished to identify with them as a means of bringing them to Christ. He refused to let their lives be swept into despair.
The cathedral holds a box of Damian's heel bone, Saint Marianne has a box of her bones in front of her standing body.
Saint Marianne is the sister who followed Damien helping those with leprosy, building homes for children who's parents had leprosy and she was involved with seeing other community needs were met.
The Cathedral is smaller than I thought it would be and currently undergoing a $15m renovation.

We weren't in Honolulu on the weekend so we had no idea that the Cathedral was closed from Monday-Friday for renovations. I guess we'll be back on the next trip.

How far of a walk is it from the cathedral to Pier 2? By taxi ? and how long? Can we make it after the 5 pm vigil mass to the pier for the 7 pm cruise departure?
