About
Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is one of Oahu's most popular coastal hiking trails on its southeastern coast, offering spectacular views of the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline. You'll get to see landmarks like Koko Crater, Makapuu Beach, and even the offshore islands Molokai and Lanai on a clear day. There's also the iconic red Makapuu Lighthouse built in 1909 which you can see along the way. Bring a pair of binoculars to spot seabirds and migrating humpback whales from November to May.
This uphill trail is about two miles long and is well-paved throughout, making it a manageable trek for families with children.

- Heather LSan Diego, California6 contributionsAmazing! What a beautiful hike and views all the way! Found ourselves here after not being able to get into Diamond Head because, unbeknownst to us, you have to make an online reservation. No reservations needed here. The trail is completely paved. The hike is a little long, but relatively easy. We saw older hikers, toddlers, pregnant moms, dads pushing strollers, etc. Everyone can do it! The lighthouse is beautiful, but you are not allowed to get close to it; too dangerous. The views once you get to the top are really stunning. Blue ocean and green mountains as far as the eye can see; stunning. Well worth the walk. And totally free.Visited December 2022Written December 18, 2022
- nikitasadiePortland, Oregon33 contributionsHumid but gorgeous views all the way upFor some reason I had it in mind this was a leisurely stroll to the lighthouse. It is not. We hiked Diamond Head the day before so maybe I was tired but this one seemed harder. It was very humid which made it hard as well. The views along the way make it way worth it.Visited September 2022Written December 30, 2022
- amankiewiczChicago, Illinois157 contributionsGreat hike, but not a moderate hike as TA advertisesI want to level set here. The hike is great. We were lucky to see humpbacks during our hike. But, this isn’t an easy hike. It is straight up with several areas with a very steep incline. Plenty of spots to rest, but be ready for a workout. My legs are still killing me and we did the hike 2 days ago. I would recommend doing the hike early in the morning so you get a break from the sun. It does get very hot, so bring plenty of water.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 7, 2023
- Julie_loveabargainAustralia572 contributionsEasy walkWe got a 23 bus to Sealife park then walked to the trail stopping at Makapuu lookout and beach park on the way to check out the views. We then proceeded to hike the Lighthouse trail, which is on a cement path all the way. There are parts where it gets hilly and it is hot as no shade so don't forget to bring water with you. After we did the trail to the top we walked alone the shoreline trails to get to Sandy Beach. From Sandy beach you can walk to the blow hole, but on the day we went you could see the blow hole spraying from Sandy beach and as we had done the blow hole previously we just took pictures of it from Sandy Beach. After spending time roaming Sandy Beach we caught a 23 bus back to Waikiki from the bus stop at Kealahou St + Kalanianaole HwyVisited December 2022Written January 8, 2023
- TSP2014Colleyville, Texas366 contributionsWorth the HikeUnfortunately we didn't make it all the way to the top because it started to rain and we didn't have our umbrellas with us. It's a pretty steep hike up to the top, so if you aren't in great shape it might be a difficult hike. It gets busy and parking is limited so you'll want to get there early. There are port-a-potties on site, but no actual restrooms. We stopped just down the way at some before going on the hike. Make sure you have your camera, plenty of water and sunscreen and enjoy the hike :)Visited January 2023Written January 11, 2023
- Bonz66Berwick, Australia142 contributionsGreat Walk - Nice and EasyFantastic walk, not hard at all as is paved all the way and there are plenty of places to stop and rest and take in the views. Make sure you take plenty of water and be sun smart. We were blessed to have been able to see whales and their young swimming and breaching. If you don't want to drive, you can always get an Uber to get there. It was totally worth the walk to take in the views and just have some relaxing time away from Honolulu.Visited December 2022Written January 22, 2023
- Y KToronto, Canada360 contributionsWorth a visit! This hike is easily accessible by car (a fair sized parking lot with people parking along the sides as well), and doable by bus from Waikiki as well. We took the 23 bus from Waikiki and got off at Sea Life park. To get to the start of the trail, you need to walk back up a short stretch of highway. (Don't worry there are usually a few people doing the same thing!) It's quite a narrow path walking along the road and some areas had overgrown plants which made it non-existent. We started walking up going with traffic, and then crossed the road once we saw a clear path on the opposite side. Walking opposite traffic allows cars to see you as they come around the corner. As well, you get a great view of the beach and water from there- but be aware of your surroundings as it is a busy area! In total after passing the scenic point, it's about 15 minutes to Makapu'u starting point. The trail itself is paved and all uphill. There is no shade so plan to hike early and wear sunscreen and a hat. The ocean breezes at some break points do help. We did the hike at 12:30pm which was a mistake. It was VERY hot. Views are nice from the top and scenic along the coast as you go. We saw humpback whales on our way down and many other hikers reported seeing whales. There is a second path at the start of the trail that we did not take unfortunately. There is a beautiful beach across from Sea Life park as well. Public bathrooms available (and the closest ones to Makapu'u).Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 24, 2023
- shelley1cPerth, Australia99 contributionsSunset hike the whole family lovedWe were running late for the hike so we only had 1 hour 20 minutes before the park shut. We ran up where we could before we were too puffed and walked as fast as we could. We didnt really stop at the lookouts but it was beautiful. We spent 5 minutes at the top, took some pics and then power walked back down! It was beautiful and we wish we had more time. We saw seabirds sawing above us too. The ranger was angry at us as we left, for being a couple of minutes over the time and she had already shut the gate. there was still others in the car park so I don't know how they would have gone getting out.Visited January 2023Written February 8, 2023
- Dorothy CHonolulu, Hawaii237 contributionsGreat workout for an old ladyIf you’re not accustomed to inclines, this trail will give you a bit of a workout. Going up was easier for my old knees than coming back down. My dog was unimpressed by my slow, steady pace. The views are spectacular, and the winds were powerful. Add some rain to the mix, and prime 🌈 moment. Overall, a bit of a challenge for my exercise-deprived body, but worth every knee pop. No facilities. Glad I carried water.Visited February 2023Traveled with friendsWritten February 9, 2023
- Charles GAtlanta, Georgia17 contributionsmoderate strenous hike for 45 minutes each wayNice paved hike which takes about 45 minutes each way with some stops to take pictures. Very windy once you get higher up and can see the ocean. There are a lot of people on the trail. There were no whales in the ocean to see though. It is moderate difficult at times but lots of little kids made it to the top. Great views of the ocean and lighthouse.Visited February 2023Written February 10, 2023

Hawaii has many unsurprisingly nice hikes. On this trip, we did Ka'ena (reviewed separately) and Makapu'u. We've done Diamond Head on a prior trip and I wish we could have done Koko Head this time around but the gf preferred more beach time. Makapu'u is on the eastern coast of Oahu - roughly a 25 to 30 mins or so drive from Waikiki. As you drive here, there are numerous lookouts and sites so be sure to take it slower and enjoy. Makapu'u has a free parking lot that had more than enough spaces for that day. The trail itself is about 30 mins each way and not too strenuous. It wasn't too steep and we went on a cloudy day so it wasn't too hot either. The hike was pretty as you see the mountain range to your left and behind you as you go through the trail (which is all paved BTW). To your right is the ocean. As you go up and look back, you'll see the road which you come from and Koko Head. The scenery in Hawaii is always beautiful and Makapu'u is no different. You finally make it to the end/top and you'll look down towards Waimanalo Beach, the eastern coast, some offshore islands and the lighthouse. In retrospect, I feel you get more bang for your buck with this hike than Kaena. Kaena is long whereas this is short. I would still do them both, however.

I and my wife took 13/67 bus from Waikiki which took us all the way to sea life park. From there the light house trial is only half a mile of may be a mile away. Easy walk with amazing views of the ocean. We thoroughly enjoyed the walk from Sea life park to the lighthouse trial parking lot. We went there early in the morning by 7 am, the trial was easy and must do for all kinds of people with diff fitness levels. Incredible views on top. While coming back down I did notice that the parking was over crowded and people started parking on roads. I highly recommend people to take. One day “THE BUS” pass for 5.50$. You can use this on any bus / any route in Oahu. The bus also offers rides to most remote destinations you won’t imagine.

This was one of my favorite hikes on Oahu. Beautiful views and not overly crowded. The path is paved and extra wide so plenty of rooms to pass people easily. Not much shade so remember your water. There is no restroom or drinking water available here, but Waimanalo Beach is a short drive (less than 3 miles) and they have restrooms.
The views were awesome! Once you leave Waikiki, it is amazing that there are places where you aren't on top of each other. It was windy so hold on to your hat at the top.

We arrived on a Saturday morning around 945am and had to park on the highway which was OK as the parking lot was full. We love to hike and this one was a nice, paved 2.5 mile trail up to the lighthouse. Beware the climb is steep with 4 stop points to give you a story on the view. There is always a very nice cool breeze which makes the hike so enjoyable, lots of people but not enough to crowd you. Bring water and if you need to go to the restroom, sorry there are none or any food joints. FYI....About a mile before Makapuu there is Sandy Beach, turn off there and drive a little bit and there is a bathroom there plus very nice volcanic rock formation on the beach to take some great photos. Definitely recommend for everyone to hike once and the views are amazing!

We parked on the side of the road s you turn into the lighthouse parking area. The parking gets quite crowded. Then you start walking up a paved trail. The trail is mostly uphill, but there are many pull-offs and look-outs on the way. It's not a short walk. You are rewarded at the top with spectacular views, possibly some swimming turtles, and a chance to see whales. The whales we saw did not breach, but they blew out of their blow holes and rolled their fins along the top of the water. It was fun to watch for them and learn to spot them. Well worth the walk!

We did this hike while on a stop using the Shaka guid app and the views were spectacular. Can be tricky to find parking so just hover around until someone leaves (took 5 min wait for us) and bring lots of water (there is no shade!). The hike is on a paved path but it is uphill so I'd still recommend hiking shoes as going down in flip flops might not be enjoyable. The views are well worth the hike and some of Oahu's best!

We had a lovely time on this paved trail all the way to the lighthouse. It's a nice walk with interesting views of many bays. We saw whales jumping and splashing. Hot in the full sun so bring some water.

This would have been more enjoyable if we had more accurate information beforehand. We saw a couple of estimates of the distance, as 1 1/2 miles round trip, or 2 miles round trip. According to our phone app that measured steps, it was 3 miles round trip. We are in pretty good shape for 70 years old, but the 1 1/2 miles of a steady uphill climb was more than I expected. Also, we were doing the North Shore drive in one day, and this walk ate up more time than we expected. It is all paved, so it is easy in that sense, and we saw lots of strollers at the beginning, but I don't know how many of them had actually gone the whole way. As someone else noted, there is no bathroom on the trail, or at the trailhead, so be prepared. We continued to drive up toward the north shore, and in that direction you will quickly come to a beach with a bathroom. The scenery on the way up, looking south, was pretty but not remarkable, but if you hang on until the end, you see a beautiful view toward the north.

This "hike" is more like a stroll with a paved path the entire way - great for tourists but if you love to really hike this might not be your cup of tea.
Its about 2.5 miles round trip from the parking lot to the lookout and back. There are amazing sweeping views off the cliffs and into the ocean and this is a great spot for Whale Watching in the Winter. We saw three separate groups of humpbacks breaching in the channel on the way up.
The hike has a fairly steep incline at the start. The parking lot is small for the amount of traffic on the trail so be prepared to possibly park on the road and walk a little extra to the trail head.
Also nearby on a flat trail are some tide pools well worth exploring if you have some extra time!

This trail was a lot longer than most reviews about it say--many said this was only a mile long, but I'd say this is closer to three. It was worth it, though! It wasn't crowded when we went and is fully paved, which is nice. I'd go on a day where it isn't cloudy! This is on the most beautiful side of the island, in my opinion.

Hi! I plan to do a sunrise hike but I am confused about parking. I know I will have to park on the street, but what am I looking for? Is there a lot specifically for this hike? I am seeing 2 names; the lighthouse trail and the ka'iwi trail, and it doesn't look like they start in the same place! Thanks for any help!

There is a small lot at the trail head, along the road to the trail, and at the Mokapu'u Overlook.
The park and trailhead are located off of the Kalanianaole Highway (Hwy. 72) at the southeastern-most point of Oahu. From Honolulu, take the H1 freeway east until it becomes Highway 72. Follow the road beyond Hawaii Kai, Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach Park until you reach the park area adjacent to the highway. Hope this helps.

I didn't uber on the island, but it was a moderate drive from waikiki... probably ~30 minutes. Might be more cost effective to rent a car if you are able.

I'm thinking of taking my mom, who's around 60 years old, to see the tide pools. However, I'm a bit concerned about the safety of this hike. Do you guys advise this? How long did it take to get to the bottom of the trail to the tide pools? Also, how long did it take to get to the top of the trail to the lighthouse?
Deidra M
Hot Springs, AR273 contributions
I wouldn’t advise hiking to the tide pools. There isn’t a managed trail. If you want to see some tide pools, there is a pull off nearby between there and the Halona blowhole. You can walk right out to the beach area and see tide pools there. Not much of a walk from parking area, and it’s mainly rock and sand, pretty flat, and you can walk to the rock area.
Where are suggested parking spots if you want to hike the trail at night. I know the gates close and are locked around 7:45p.m. I'm a bit sketched to park on the road because I don't want my car broken into. I want to shoot the lighthouse at night but am truly worried about my car being parked on the main highway....

If you have any knee/joint problems and are doing Diamond Head in the morning. You will be very sore. I am a registered nurse and my husband and I both did this trek in the late afternoon with overcast skies and some wind. My husband has blood pressure problems and we had to keep stopping several times along the way. I am in good shape, but nevertheless it is a good hike. The good thing about the trek is it is well paved, there are sitting areas along the way so you can take it easy. Definitely bring some water with you. The views are spectacular, especially at the very top. I would suggest afterwards some motrin and ice up your knees when you get back to your hotel. Good Luck.

While the answer is yes to public bus transport to the lighthouse...do yourself and traveling party a BIG favour and rent a car..for the day trip....besides it will allow you more flexibility if u decide to stop a other spots along the way...Haunama Bay is on the way...Sandy beach...Hawaii Kai area is very cool spot if u get hungry...the rental will enhance your visit and experience to Honolulu...isn't that what you want? 🌴🌴🌞🌞...enjoy ur trip to my home town...aloha for now

All free, but parking is tight because of the popularity of the trail with locals and tourists. Go early...best time of the day.
