I signed up for the Beautiful Colors of Hawaii Tour about four days prior to the tour, and were fortunate to be able to get a spot. Unfortunately, the Sunrise tour was all booked, as the islands are currently very busy with travels. The reservation and confirmation processes were very good, and the confirming email gave all the information you would need to prepare for the tour. The pick-up was on time within the pick-up window and our guide Kurt gave us a heads up prior to arrival.
Not having a car on Oahu like we did on Maui was the major reason for taking the tour to be able to see other parts of the island than just Waikiki Beach area. We had a full tour of seven people and were able to hit seven stops on the island including a lunch stop as well. Kurt was a very good photographer and worked with others less proficient on the tour. He was also able to make it a great experience for all levels of photographers on the tour pointing out good locations, and giving time when necessary to capture great shots. He kept the tour moving and was informative about the locations on the tour.
I would recommend this tour if you want to get a different perspective of Oahu, and don't have the time to commit a full day to a photo tour. Regardless of your skill level or equipment, you will be able to come away from this tour with some nice shots. Thanks to Kurt & the OPT team it was a great time.

There are tones of group tours in Oahu, but I chose to do 2 tours with Oahu Photography, even before I go with them: The sunrise & Beautiful colors, for their itinerary and because they go in a small number (maximum 7 persons in the van).
I enjoyed both of the tours a lot, and Alex is one of the best tour guides I ever met.
Alex is very knowledgeable about the island, and he could give you many information about the activities,tours, authentic food and restaurants recommendations, to make your vacation more enjoyable.
I felt like it’s a meetup hangout, so you get to know new people and have conversations plus share taking the breakfast or lunch together in a beautiful scenic areas (beach/look out).
In the first tour I dropped my phone near a beach spot in the North shore area, and when I recognized that at the next spot, I told Alex, so he took us back there, not just that, he helped me with another group members to find it, and then connected me wit a beach detector who found the phone later in the same day. Thanks Alex again and thanks for the nice people for all efforts, that is priceless 🙏🌻

De-Jay is top of his game! He took us to places to see the amazing views of the island. He entertained us with his jokes, taught us how to use our smartphones and camera settings to capture the moments, learned so much more about Oahu's history and facts. Enjoyed the breakfast stop, the stop to enjoy a shave ice and the visit at the Dole Plantation. I love that this was a small group setting. Highly recommending this tour company to others!

The tour took us to 2 good locations to photograph the sunset and do light painting/astrophotography. The tourguide is an excellent photographer looking at his portfolio - but as there were 8 or so people on the tour their time was divided (not unexpectedly).
We got an excellent guided description of the scenery as we drove - which was great!
However the guide did take some nice portraits of the couples and introduced us to steel wool fire painting and light painting.
The price was reasonable for what we got - but if you’re expecting a detailed session regarding technical aspects of photography then this is not for you.

Thank you for your review and thank you for describing your experience with us. This tour is exactly what you said. We do not state that we will go into depth about photography. This is a 4 hour group tour in which your guide will take you to awesome places and do things you are not expecting nor have most likely never experienced. We can not stop to give everyone in-depth technical photography lessons, we would not be able to do all of those other much more memorable experiences of this tour.
Please make sure you know this if you are going to book this tour. It’s about the unique experience, not the individual lesson. We have private tours that are available for those looking for that.

We took the Complete Island & Sunrise Photo Adventure with Alex. This was our first family trip with a teen. We liked how small size (7) the tour was. How knowledgeable Alex knows the area, cameras, smartphones, apps and downright funny. We had our iphones while others have different types of cameras. He got us into popular and off beaten places at the right time of day without meeting too much fanfare of other tourists to capture stunning views. Took great shots of everything and offered to take our family pic of us that we will treasure! It was far and above beyond my expectations of what such a tour would be. If you are into taking lifestyle, scenic, artistic landscape photography, this should be on the top of your list. Highly recommended. You'll not be disappointed.

The Oahu photo tour exactly what I wanted. The day started with an opportunity to capture a beautiful sunrise off of Sandy beach on on the South East corner of the island, where I not only got several HDR photo sets with my Nikon of the sunrise, but with my iPhone I got a panoramic shot that included the sunrise with a rainbow in the same photo! Very exciting. Then we drove stunning highway 83 where we say beautiful cliffs and rock formations, small island's off the shore of Oahu (e.g., Chinaman's hat), went inland to see beautiful scenic farms, a Buddhist temple, and a forested beach. The tour guide is a fable and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

Mac the guide was a wonderful guy, very helpful and funny, with good stories. I was disappointed with the fact that there was no professional help with photography as I thought there would be. The places we went were beautiful and we had time to take photos. Also at the start of the tour we had to wait about half an hour for 2 other people and we missed part of the sunrise, which was the main reason for the tour... I don't think it's fair to the other guests that did show up on time. Then lunch was supposed to be included and it was not.

Hi Maria and future guests. We always appreciate getting feedback from our guests so we can improve on the service we provide.
I am sorry that a few people were late for the tour, but we would have done the same for you and anyone else. If we know, we can make the sunrise, and we will make sure to give a few extra minutes for a guest to show up. I am sorry about that, though.
As a team, we have discussed the issue of not providing any help with you during the tour. We try to make sure we help everyone out with photography on all of our trips. At the same time, we ask you as a paying customer to get the most out of the tour as possible. By that, I mean, please engage with us and make sure you tell us precisely what you are trying to get out of the tour. We will do our best to make sure you are getting the best attention, but if we feel we are pushing a little too hard, we tend to back off. So please, all future guests reading this, tell us precisely what you want to get out of the tour, and we 100% committed to your goals.
I also need to address the issue of lunch. In the ten years we have been busy we have never included any meals or drinks. I am sorry you miss understood this. Some people want a pure coffee while some people want a giant burrito for breakfast.
Thank you for this review. It will make us a better tour company for future tours.

Mack is the man! For real. If you're thinking about doing a photo tour... do it! If you're thinking about a private photo tour... do it! My wife and I booked this for my parents and we took a private tour with 4 people and it was worth every penny. We called ahead of time and talked to the main guys running the company which answered all of our questions and gave us more info than we asked for (which was greatly appreciated). My parents had some special needs for dietary and mobility issues and Oahu Photography Tours had no problems meeting our needs. We had so much fun, I wish we were doing a second tour while we were visiting Oahu! I don't know that I can write enough good things about these fellas and how well they run their business.

I was overwhelmed when trying to choose a tour! However, seeing as this tour was only 5.5 hours instead of 9, and was also very affordable and seemingly out of the box, we gave it a shot! From the moment we were picked up to the drop off at our hotel, our expectations were not only met, but exceeded by a long shot! There were single solo travelers, older travelers, and families in our group! All sites were easily accessible to older and younger travelers. The group was small and intimate and our guides would feel out our vibes and allow us more time in places we really enjoyed! I never felt rushed or disappointed in ANY way! Don’t worry if you attend alone, for the guides will snap the most iconic pics of u the entire time! By the end of it all we were like one big family. One of the best days of my life hands down and the best food I’ve ever had. I cannot say enough about Kurt and little Alex, they went the extra mile for us! Big Alex if you read this you should be proud of these two! Unforgettable

I took two tours this weekend, the Full Moon tour and the Epic Sunset Tour. Both of them were with Mac Strickland. The weather was really terrible on both days, but that didn't stop us! I had a great time, and I captured some incredible photos in spite of the weather conditions. Mac's positive attitude and awesome energy made it easy to dive right in and make the most of it and overcome the weather issues. We went to some really beautiful locations and found the best vantage points for shooting photos worth framing and hanging on the wall! If the tours can be this great when the weather is awful, I can only imagine how amazing they are when the weather is beautiful. Thanks, Mac, for two really memorable tours and lots of excellent photos!

Aloha. I am interested in doing the Beautiful Colours of Hawaii tour - I notice in the description it is not suitable for people with mobility issues, I don't have mobility issues exactly but I am not good with climbing over rocks and steep uneven pathways. Will that be a problem for me?

So sorry I didn't see this question earlier and now it's probably too late. But, I would say the tour I took would not be good for you as a lot of it was over rocky surfaces. However I'm sure they have tours that would be more suitable for you.

We have two sunrise tours going out and three sunset tours that go out :) the sunrise tours are starting between 4:45 and 5 a.m. depending on your hotel, and the sunset tours start between 12:30 and 1:30 depending on the tour and your hotel. Wow. Thank you to the community for answering the question. We will teach you how to capture amazing photographs. If we have time, which we will, we can capture some photos of you and your guests while at the stops, using your camera. However, we do have portrait tours available.

Is this attraction good for just whale watching?

While you might be able to see whales of the shore it is not something we would say you will see on the tour. You might get lucky. The guides are very good at spotting out whales.
