Hawaii Theatre has played a significant role in Honolulu’s cultural landscape since 1922. The mission of the non-profit Hawaii Theatre Center, established in 1984 is to provide a broad range of entertainment, cultural and educational experiences; promote redevelopment and revitalization of downtown Honolulu/Chinatown; and enhance the quality of life in Honolulu. The Hawaii Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and was recognized as the “Outstanding Historic Theatre in America” in 2005 by the League of Historic American Theatres and, in 2006, received an Honor Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, the restored Hawaii Theatre re-opened in 1996, and attracts 80,000-100,000 patrons a year to its beautiful auditorium. The Hawaiii Theatre is also proud to be recognized by GuideStar as a 2019 Gold Seal of Transparency Recipient. Learn more about our non-profit organization’s background and financi

Never returned monies on cancelled even after a year and a half
Jun 2020
On Nov 19, 2019 I purchased 2 second row center stage tickets to the Hawaii Theatre showing of Tusk in Honolulu in the amount of 215.00. The original show was to take place in April 2020 and then rescheduled to July 2020. I have NUMEROUS emails to management at the theatre trying to have my monies refunded to me and I have have only had 2 responses from Hawaii Theatre. First they wanted me to donate the monies to the theatre and I said no and now they want to offer me a Gift Certificate. I have lost my second row center stage tickets due to the show being rescheduled several times and have even disputed through my CC company. At this point I really just need grocery money and money for bills. My circumstances have changed. I have even driven down to the Theatre and they have a Closed sign up right above the hours of operation which state they should be open. I am reaching out to you to hopefully get my monies returned to me.

"Allegiance" musical was outstanding, and in such a grand venue!
Apr 2019 • Couples
I have long known that Hawaii Theatre has been recognized as an "Outstanding Historic Theatre in America and have often enjoyed performances there since it was beautifully restored and reopened in 1996.
We saw "Allegiance" a musical that has been presented on Broadway and were again in awe! The performance documents the internment of innocent Japanese American citizens during World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This production by the Manoa Valley Theatre was the Hawaii premiere. The actors were superb, the venue was grand, the ushers were helpful and gracious, the exhibits were moving and the message of course, is one that we can not forget.
We do not live in Hawaii, but travel here about once per year to our timeshare. When we are here, we always make a point to check out what is playing at the Hawaii Theatre and we were certainly delighted, once again!

Great Old Refurbished Theatre
Apr 2019 • Couples
We often see if we can see plays when traveling and found an interesting one at the Hawaii Theatre. Never heard of it, but it was a 1920's theatre (probably Vaudville), that eventually declined as the China town area became run down. It was abandoned an nearly demolished. Saved by community and $30 million, it is large and nicely redone, but hardly elegant. It is right off the business district of downtown and on the edge of Chinatown. Lots of good seats and decorations. They have popular stars and rock groups and legitimate theatre. Worth a look.

It is an excellent theatre and very well managed and maintained. Sound system was very good. The most remarkable thing is the theatre is old and has a great historic feel to it. Problems I have with the place is they try to stop viewers from taking pictures, and videos , and I felt like I was in a prison with the overzealous security telling you no pictures. I have been in the biggest concert hall in Honolulu, the Blaisdell, and you can film to your hearts content. Surely the performers do not care, since it only enhances their publicity to be published on Facebook or other social media. Also the bar is a cosmic joke. $22 for two lousy tiny glasses of wine that was not particularly good, then you could not take it into the concert hall, so you had to guzzle it down in the hallway before entering the theatre.

Gorgeous Historic Theatre in Downtown Honolulu
Dec 2018 • Friends
Walking by countless times, it wasn't until just lately that I finally got to step inside this historic and gorgeous building. The Hawaii Theatre was built in 1922 and has gone through bad times and good over the years. It's an old building, so all tickets are subject to a fee that goes directly to upkeep and remodeling. The entire theatre is beautiful; there is art to look at everywhere from the walls to the top of the dome. Be sure to take pictures and explore.

I had an atypical experience here as I got to perform on stage with the Honolulu Chorale at the invitation of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. During our rehearsals I explored the backrooms and basement; it's fascinating to see the history on the walls. The seating area is divided as the orchestra section of the ground level with a loge and balcony above. The balcony has very high steep seating, but pretty much everywhere provides a good view of the stage. If you have the opportunity to see a show here, definitely do! The theatre offers discounts for students, military, etc., so be sure to ask.

The Theatre needs a better way to handle disruptive patrons
Dec 2017 • Couples
I previously gave the Theatre an excellent rating. I now rate it as terrible. On 12/7/17 my husband and I attended an extremely disappointing show that was advertised as a concert. It was more like a Game Show with prizes and an excess amount of talking. Very little music. Not the Theatre's fault, it is just the venue. The 6 little girls behind us ranging in ages from 5 to about 10 became extremely bored and entertained themselves by non stop kicking the backs of our and adjacent chairs. I asked the adult chaperone to please control his kids. He ignored me as did the kids when we asked them 3 times to please stop kicking our chairs. I brought this matter to the Theatre Manager's attention. Her solution was for my husband and I to leave our $150 8th row center seats and move to cheaper aisle seats. There were other areas these out of control brats could have been relocated too. And I feel that if the irresponsible chaperone wouldn't agree to that, this group should have been told to leave the Theatre immediately. My husband demanded a refund; I believe we are getting it. We walked out. But one of our last evenings on Oahu that we so looked forward too was ruined. SHAME ON YOU HAWAII THEATRE CENTER!!! We deserved better treatment than this -- especially after paying $150 for tickets!!!! We won't return and we are warning everyone who reads my review to weigh the risks of being in the same situation as my husband and I were before giving them your money.

I came for a program, but the building is the star
Jun 2016 • Couples
This is one of the "movie palaces" built in the heyday of Hollywood movies in the 1920s. The theatre is awash in gilt and glitz and has been lovingly restored to its original splendor. The theatre is in Honolulu's Chinatown and features all kinds of programming. For example, I was there for a program presented by the New York Times crossword editor.

Parking is tight in Chinatown, but there is ample parking in an underground garage just a block away. The entrance is just beyond the intersection of Beretania (the entrance is on Beretania) and Nuuanu.

If you ever get a chance, see the building when they are featuring the restored theatre organ.

Beautiful Venue
Nov 2015 • Couples
We attended a Makana concert last night at this theater. It is a really beautiful, small theater that has been graciously restored. The sound quality was excellent. Check their website and attend an event here if you are in Honolulu. You won't be disappointed. It is an easy trip on the bus, and you can buy tickets from the box office by phone. They offer a senior discount.
