This was so much fun! My daughter and I tried surfing for the first time. We were in a group lesson with eight people. There was minimal land/practice time (a good thing) and we went straight into the water. Sage and Pono were beyond kind and patient. They were super helpful and encouraging and push you into the wave. They use a drone to take pictures (but it hovered during the beginning of our lesson so all pictures of me falling off). Small lockers are in the surf shop for your belongings. They provide long sleeve rash guards and reef shoes. Parking is across the street at the zoo -- public parking so remember to pay at the kiosk. Great part of the beach as it wasn't crowded and the waves were mild and long. Perfect first time on a board.

100% recommend this if you want to try surfing for the first time!

We had tried to sign up for a lesson outside of our hotel on the other end of Waikiki and were discouraged because of anticipated weather. We had a perfect day.

Ask for Niko! If you’re even thinking of taking surf lessons - DO IT! Niko made my first ever surfing experience something I’ll never forget…amazing instruction and pointers each time helped me get to stand up on the board very quickly and feel what a joy surfing can be. Highly recommend the private lesson for two - Niko gave us undivided attention and made it such a fun time. He knew when the right waves came in, helped with a strong push and said when to start the motions of standing up - it was so incredible….I was ready to go back the same day and do it again! Kim V

Our instructor Kalani was awesome! Super friendly and helpful, especially for our first time surfing ever. The amount of wave time we got in our semi-private session was definitely worth the cost. Would definitely recommend to all beginner surfers!! Mahalo!!

My family had a positive experience taking the surfing class here. We took the group class which totaled to around 15-20 people when we went. Some of my relatives are older and less coordinated, and the instructors gave them a lot of helpful tips and even helped pull my them amongst the waves when they struggled to paddle themselves. With their guidance, my older relatives who went in with little confidence managed to get a couple successful surf runs, which made them feel really excited and proud! I appreciated how nice and helpful the instructors were. Because of them, my family had a great time!

On the other hand, the photos you can purchase feel like a ripoff. After the class, you can pay $50 to purchase a link to all the photos taken by a photographer from shore during your lesson. Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy quick way to browse all the photos that were taken before purchasing access to the photo link. They only had a slow slideshow playing of all the photos/videos which my family didn’t have time to wait through (though we did see a few photos of a couple of us in the mix). We ended up purchasing the photos link and disappointedly saw later that only 2/5 of us had photos of us taken. Based on all the photos, it looked like the photographer must’ve taken photos of the entire class arbitrarily for only 10 minutes near the beginning of the entire two hour session. One of my older relatives who only got the hang of surfing towards the end of the class and was very proud of her accomplishments was sad to see there were no pictures of her surfing. (I’m personally a bit sad about this because if we come to Hawaii again in the future, she might be too old to try surfing again.)

We called because we were upset that not everyone had photos of taken of them (even a younger relative who had many successful runs throughout the entire class), but was told it was our fault for not looking at the slideshow before purchasing. That sucked, because regardless the options were to either buy photos of only a few of us or get no photos at all. They told us we could take the class again to try to get more photos, but they would only give us a discount of $5 off per person (a small discount since it’s originally $85/person), and we’d have to again pay $50 to purchase the next session’s photos. So overall the photo experience felt lazy and subpar. It would’ve been nice if the photographer took photos at different points in time during the course or at least tried to get photos of every person who took the class.

I’d recommend the class if your main priority is just to try surfing, but if you want photos for memories’ sake, try a different company.

Mahalo for taking your time to write a review. We understand your frustration about the photos. However we don't force anyone to purchase the pictures and that we mention on our slide show before we leave our surf shop. make sure that before purchasing it that we recommend you you check the slides first before purchasing it. We did n. Thank you

We booked a reservation for 3 private lessons on Sunday, and we were excited because this is the surfing spot where we learned 20 years ago when we attended UH Manoa. The next morning we woke up to a voicemail from another Surf School that we had left a voicemail with on Sunday morning checking if they had room for private lessons. The voicemail from this other Surf School stated they were not taking anyone else out unless they were an Olympic swimmer, and any schools that were giving lessons, were only doing it for money and to be careful. I then checked the surf reports and the National Weather Service had posted a High Surf Advisory for the South Shore - stating there was strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous (see photo of Tweet). We immediately called the school and asked to cancel as our kids were young and not ocean swimmers. They were very condescending saying other students were going out, and they could save us if something happened. They would not let us cancel or give us a refund and hung up on us - even after we offered to cover $100 for the instructor that showed up.

Do not do business with a company that puts money over safety.

Our surf instructor was Jungle Mike and we opted for semiprivate lessons so we could catch more time on waves. It was one of our favorite parts of the trip! Mike was great to chat with and gave helpful advice that had us catching waves every time. We also thought the wave conditions in mid Feb in the 9am session were perfect for beginner surfers (we have surfed once every couple years, always with an instructor). Would definitely book again.

We had a great time (and came away with a passion for surfing)! My partner and I were experiencing Hawai'i for the first time, and we made it a point to learn how to surf as one of our bigger excursions. We went with the group lessons, and we got the photo package for a group of 2. They did a good job of sending us info ahead of time about what to expect, and they provided a rash guard / boots for us. There was also a brief presentation also covering how to actually surf, and what the lessons would be like once we got out onto the water.

What was great is that we had someone with experience who stuck with my partner and me, and helped us practice and be able to stand up on the board while surfing. They answered questions and gave good advice while we were making our attempts. They even handled picking the wave and giving you a boost when you start paddling! Through their help, my partner and I were both able to stand up and get some great runs.

Some notes:
• Guests are involved with the setup: you walk down to the beach from the surf shop, and help bring your surfboard down from across the street.

• The boards we had some wear and tear, which made it somewhat difficult for my partner to get back on the board at points.

• While we were out there, a group (from a different surf school?) arrived near where we were, and it got a little crowded in our spot. There were a few points where the crowding made it difficult to complete a run. I don't know if there are any possible solutions on HH Surf Schools' end, but a less busy time might result in a better experience.

• We recommend the couples photo package. They flew out some drones with cameras, and they got some great shots AND VIDEOS of us surfing! If you want to bring home memories for yourself or loved ones, it's absolutely worth it. Plus it's really cool surfing and have a drone follow you along!

• There was plenty of time to learn how to surf, so we were able to enjoy simply practicing and honing the skill.

We paid $50 for someone else's pictures and videos. I called and asked if we could get the correct ones that we paid for but never received them. Instead we have videos and pictures of someone else surfing.

They should give us a refund for the $50 which was paid for that service. Other than that the surfing instructor was good as far as I know. Just the uploaded videos of some random person surfing was a disappointment because we paid for videos of my grandson, not to see other people.

We arrived at 6:30 am to the desk where we were barely greeted and told to grab a shirt and shoes and to put all our belongings in a locker that wouldn’t lock. We were told everything would be locked up after we left. Not the case. Watched a short video on safety and out to the beach we went. Stretched and went over the technique with us and paddled out to start our surfing lesson. When I got all the way out I turned to find my husband in our group of 6 or seven people. He was nowhere to be seen. I was the only one concerned. The two instructors never introduced themselves so we were unable to address them by name. Very strange to me. Anyway I finally spotted my husband on shore and he was safe. I proceeded and got up a couple of times. I did have someone surf over into me but I managed to avoid getting hurt. Terrible headache for about a week after though. I ended my lesson about 15 minutes early because it started to pour down rain and my husband and I walked back gathered our things from the unlocked unattended lockers and that was a rap.

Mouse was our instructor and he was incredible, the real deal! I would highly recommend a private lesson or semi private for couples. My husband and I did a semi private lesson with mouse and he was in control the whole time, making sure we caught the right waves, avoided the reef, that we got on the board, and more than anything he kept us safe- from getting hit from other surfers, etc. He gave great instruction, encouragement, and truly became a friend in the short time we were together. We both were able to ride a few waves successfully, and we were stoked! After he shared pictures of his surfing which were truly spectacular! I am so glad that we met our instructor, Mouse (Derk) thank you!!!
