Nice shops along with some of the best restaurants - whether you want to sit down and experience fine dining, or if you want to dine al fresco. We also found a window to grab some hot dogs or chowder. If you are a sailing junkie, look along the water for a cut through to the local's boat store - The Ship's Store (great t-shirts). Fresh live lobsters are available off the docks. You can just walk through or spend hours persusing the local fare. A great way to start the day is to have breakfast and coffee out on the dock at The Coffee Grinder. Everyone raved about her homemade baked goods, but I was not very impressed - maybe I just ordered the wrong thing.
Most of the sailing tours go out of here - however, if you want to sail more than sight-see, check out www.12meterharters.com - one of the best kept secrets in Newport. These folks don't hawk tours on the sidewalks.

Bannister's wharf is in the heart of down town Newport - its got lots of shops and restaurants. Stroll down to the end of the wharf and you'll find adirondack chairs - great place to sit and enjoy the passing boats along the harborfront. There is a little coffee shop at the end of the dock where you can get a latte wgile enjoying the view.

This waterfront was once a downtrodden part of Newport that has been revitalized into a tourist attraction with many unique shops. The summer crowds are heavy and some tourism continues into the fall and winter. This was the home of the America's Cup races and is still a starting point for some trans-Atlantic races. Restaurants and shops abound. Parking is VERY scarce. Police presence is plentiful and good and it is a safe place. Night life is abundant. There are many waterfront festivals such as Irish, German and the Newport Boat Show.

We walked here from the Historic Hill Inn where we stayed - about a three minute walk down the hill to the water. Great shops, very clean and upbeat atmosphere, a yummy little fresh fruit smoothie place smack dab in the middle. Maps everywhere to help you find out where you're going. Not too crowded even in July, it's spread out enough, but not too much that you can't get to everything you want to. Not easy to park there, however, so it helped that we had parking off-street at the inn and could walk anywhere easily and quickly. Nothing is too far away from anything in Newport!

Shopping at its best. You could get lost in some of these unique stores. Seems as if time has slipped away. Very relaxing.

Here you can find great restaurants; lunches, dinners or cocktails. Nice shops for him or her. Artsy galleries, ice-cream or just the famous black pearl clam chowder can be enjoyed here, in this nice historic atmosphere. Recommended!

A great place for a stroll, sight seeing, shopping and lots of restaurants/ places to eat! Spend a nice afternoon walking around exploring, buying some souvenirs, and finding a nice place to eat or have a drink. Day or night.

Is this place pet friendly for a very friendly dog?

Hi, I have seen numerous people walking with their dogs. People even bring their young dogs to the wharf to socialize, have people pet them, etc. Given that Neil K. posted that pets are not allowed, I called the wharf. I spoke with someone in accounting who said there was no problem with bringing pets. He sounded surprised that I even asked. There is even a store called "The Black Dog" on the wharf. They have a pet parade that originates from the wharf once a year, too. I think you and your dog will have a great time. Some stores on Thames Street even put out treats and water for dogs.

It’s a street shopping area, so there wouldn’t be an issue walking on the street. There may be issues with taking the dog into the stores; that would be up to each store if they allowed it. Unless it’s a service dog, doubt it would be allowed in restaurants, but there were some with outdoor dining areas that might allow it.

Can we walk to the white horse restaurant from Bannisters?
I see there is a coffee pot in the room on the amenities list, but should we bring coffee?

As for the walk it is about ten blocks and is easily doable. I can't answer about the coffee.

Are there any shops that sell cross stitch supplies?

Not that I am aware of. Seafood restaurants, Mansion store, Scrimshaw, Body shop, chocolate shop, Ice cream, clothing and boat tours.
You might try Brick Alley shops that are located across the street from the wharfs. Plenty of shops on Thames, Spring and Franklin streets. Have fun!
