After we returned from visiting Newport last year, I read "Murder at Ochre Court" by Alyssa Maxwell and was impressed by her descriptions of this mansion. Technically, there are no tours of this building, which is the admissions and administration building for Salve Regina University. However, having taught at a university for many years, I knew that such institutions were generally pretty open. Thus, I walked into Ochre Court, stopped at the front desk and asked if I was allowed to take photos. The answer was, "Yes, so long as you stick to the main floor and don't go into the offices down that hall". I was certainly glad that I took the chance!
Ochre Court is a large châteauesque mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, United States. Commissioned by Ogden Goelet, it was built at a cost of $4.5 million in 1892. It is the second largest mansion in Newport after nearby The Breakers. These two mansions, along with Belcourt Castle (the 3rd largest mansion) and Marble House, were designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt. It is owned by Salve Regina University.
