- magill1986East Greenwich, Rhode Island183 contributionsNot typical mansion but interestingPro: plaster restoration of “wood” features; the dining room details; the quality of the restoration work: the sitting room walls. Massive fireplace in ball room. The quality of the work is interesting and skilled. Given the history of the house as detailed in other reviews and the lack of furnishing context - more photos of past use would have been interesting. Only a couple of photos of use before the owner married were used and were interesting to view - so how it had changed or been used from original, to wife’s redesign, to the ghost house gothic would have added interest/context to the space. Was also curious about the shift of the wife from Marble House to here. Such a difference in entertaining capacity. Room for some social context. Just seems like some interpretive info might be something to consider in the future. Lots of work to be done still. But more interesting than I had anticipated. But would want more info as above to return.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 5, 2024

We saw the Breakers and then decided to try out the Belcourt for something different. I'm glad we did. The Belcourt hasn't been preserved in the same way the Breakers has over time. I found it fascinating to see a mansion with a different history and how the current owner is working to restore it. The tour guide was very knowledgable about the details of the house. I highly recommend this tour if you're looking for something 'different'.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 19, 2024
- JNC-CT-RISandy Hook, Connecticut241 contributionsA Fantastic Tour!!Took the night ghost tour - loved it! Dave our guide has quite a lit of knowledge and was happy to share. Got into many rooms, although not all are renovated back to original, the layout is the same so you can still feel what it must have been like. Great tour, highly recommend.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 31, 2024

I first toured Belcourt 21 years ago and it immediately became my favorite Newport Mansion. We went again with company a week ago. I had thought the new owner was going to return it to its former splendor. I can't imagine the amount of money that has been spent. But she has decorated it with art deco furniture and posters. It look just awful! And completely detracts from the house. The furniture looks really cheap, although it probably isn't. The pictures you see online shows a huge room with stained glass etc. It's now chock full of art deco objects. Some neon. A strange older gas station pump. I'll never go back! Also they don't seem to limit the number of people on the tour. There were too many. Several rooms you could not all go into at once.

We took a nighttime candlelight tour of Belcourt Manor. The spooky atmosphere starts right when you arrive with the illuminated house, the huge statues of horses that flank the walkway, and the arched gated entry. Our tour guide David was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and architecture of Belcourt Manor. It felt more like we were getting a tour of the house of a good friend. Very different from many of the other houses that we were able to tour while in Newport. very unique architecture, Gothic looking, a bit spooky, but hauntingly beautiful. I’ve been telling everyone about our tour and would definitely do it again on my next visit.

The only tour we did that had a tour guide and we really liked that aspect of it. He was very knowledgeable and quite funny. Home still needs some work done to make it like the others, but they are doing it and considering it sat abandoned for years it is absolutely stunning.

My daughters and visited several house/estates in the area but this one had us talking the most about. Tour guide was wonderful, full of information. While the house is not furnished as the other homes are, there are so many unexpected design elements that it are truly fascinating.

Our tour guide, Mariette (sp?), was the best tour guide ever! She tied in Belcourt to the history of the other Newport mansions. She also pointed out so many facts about the restoration of the property which is unlike any of the other mansions I have toured. I look forward to touring again when as the retoration continues. The price is fair for a guided one hour tour.

If "The Breakers" is number one on your list of things to do on your list "Belcourt Castle" should be you last after all Rhode Islands municipal parking lots . Its sad to see such a wonderful building has been left to rot and the "collection" is a pile of odds and sods picked up round the world at jumble sales and thrift stores .
I lost count of how many times we were told "this is somebodies home " and I think it is terrible they charge you to walk round somebodies home, who appears to be on welfare .
It just feels dirty - all of Newports other house are professionally maintained and tour guides experienced and friendly , not so at "Belcourt Castle" so my advice is buy a book on it at on of the preservation societies stores and look from the street on your way to "Rough Point" which is a million times better .
For those innocent people planning events out there , avoid this venue if you want to keep your customers or want happy memories of the day . If the catering mirrors the fabric of the building or the proffesionalism of the tour guide , a "Big Mac and fries" would be a much more pleasant experience .

On our second trip to Newport a few weeks ago, my husband & I wanted to see some other "mansions" that we hadn't been able to see last year. After looking through all the travel guides, etc. I decided that we must visit Belcourt Castle. What a mistake! The "house" is in complete disrepair!! The wreck of a courtyard should have been my first clue. The interior of the home has not been maintained. The owners live in another part of the home and obviously don't care what the rest of the house looks like!! Peeling wallpaper, ripped furnishings, etc. They didn't even bother to try to restore the property to the elegance it must have once had. The tour lasts about 10-15 minutes and you see only a few rooms. Also, we had the worst tour guide! If another gentleman in the group didn't ask questions, we wouldn't have known anything about the history of the home! Don't let the pictures in the ad for this castle fool you! The "mansion" was so dark, I felt like I was entering the home of the Munsters!!! Don't waste your time or money, as there are so many other more valuable things to see!!!

Just visited Belcourt, it can be a very nice Mansion if some serious work was put into the building. Needs a good cleaning there was years of dust on the walls which if cleaned would greatly improve the building and appearence. I would love to see it taken back to its original state it must have been a grand place to visit. But I think the owners are more interested in using it as a ghost tour and a wedding hall then a site into the past of these beautiful buildings. If they were serious about bringing it back to its original state it would have already been done since they have owned it since 1956 and started tours in 1957 they are looking only to make a living with the old house.
